With the closed period for spreading slurry coming to an end at midnight on 31 January, the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) is reminding farmers to take extra care when working with slurry.Mixing slurry can be a particularly dangerous job as slurry gas is released very quickly, and in large quantities, as soon as the mixing starts. Slurry gas is a mixture of gases, including the extremely poisonous gas, hydrogen sulphide. Even a low concentration of hydrogen sulphide can knock out your sense of smell so you won’t even know it’s there. At higher concentrations you will rapidly find it harder to breathe and become confused – and at certain concentrations, just one breath can kill.The first 30 minutes are the most dangerous, so it is important for farmers to leave the shed as soon as mixing starts – and to stay out for at least 30 minutes. Researchers discover black hole in our galaxy spinning rapidly around itself

Using observations from state-of-the-art technology, the team of researchers found evidence that a stellar-mass black hole in our galaxy (known as 4U 1630-472) is rotating rapidly (at a speed of 92-95 per cent of the theoretically-allowed rotational speed) around its axis while sucking in falling material. It is subject to gravitational stresses and temperatures so high that it begins to shine brightly in X-rays, which were seen by astronomers using telescopes. It all started when my father and I took on the project early last year and spent several months creating mounts and fitting parts. My father was a cabinet builder for 20 plus years, so he knew his way around woodworking, so the transition to metal working wasn’t too big for him. It all started with buying a neighbor’s 2000 KX500 and a dream to put it into an aluminum frame; the best of both worlds. Shortly after buying the KX500, we were able to locate a 2009 KX450F. We of course knew of the challenge we had ahead of ourselves, seeing as how we don’t have big fancy CNC or lathe machines. Everything was accomplished using a table saw, a grinder, a jig saw, and a drum sander, which resulted in countless hours of precision hand crafting and tuning. All in all, I believe the project took about 8 months from start to finish. The KX500’s engine was torn apart down to the cases. Aluminum MMI: Index bounces back after last month’s three-year low

The Aluminum Monthly Metals Index (MMI) bounced off last month’s three-year low with a three-point increase to 86. All prices in the index increased by more than 3%. SHFE aluminum prices continued to move firmly sideways during the past month, still moving below the CNY 14,500/mt price level. While recent lows remained somewhat higher during December, price highs have not yet exceeded September’s levels. However, SHFE prices did not drop as far back as LME prices over the course of the year, with annual lows for 2019 occurring in January. Analysts do not anticipate a significant uptick in demand until after the Lunar New Year. This year, the holiday commences fairly early (on Jan. 25). Based on flat demand growth, reflected in the failure of prices to push above the critical CNY 14,500/mt price level and due to new capacity developments, SHFE aluminum prices look set to continue moving sideways (at least for now). Although production contracted in China in 2019, production looks set to increase once more in 2020 due to new capacity, plus restored capacity following temporary production declines due to heavy flooding during 2019.
