It might be getting cold across the Northern Hemisphere, but hot runners have been busy making

It might be getting cold across the Northern Hemisphere, but hot runners have been busy making the news. Two hot runner manufacturers within the Barnes Molding Solutions business unit – männer and Thermoplay – have joined forces to supply the market and develop new products. Meanwhile, Canada’s Husky Injection Molding Systems has made organisational and leadership changes to its Hot Runners, Controllers and Medical (HRCM) business, which includes the appointment of Aurelien Bastien as president. It was a relatively quiet month on the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) front, although Huhtamaki struck twice, first agreeing to acquire the majority of Everest Flexibles, a South African converter, and then the assets of Mohan Mutha Polytech Private in Andhra Pradesh, India. In other deals, Coveris acquired assets from a site formerly owned by Total Polyfilms in Preston, UK, in order to grow its position in the supply of stretch films and custom packaging converter PPC Flexible Packaging completed its fifth acquisition of specialty flexible packaging firms with the purchase of Popular Ink from Texas, USA. Elsewhere, Austrian converter Constantia Flexibles bought a majority stake in t...

Two were the heirs of Italian emigrants, and one was a California born, golden-boy athlete that worked his way through college and law school, with jobs like police officer, lifeguard and ambulance driver. wine business after purchasing an 80-acre pear and walnut orchard, as a weekend hobby farm in 1974, in Lakeport, about an hour and a half north of Napa. In order to make it cash flow he converted it to a vineyard and sold grapes to other producers. When that market subsided, he began to produce wine, rather than to lose money selling the crop, for less than production costs. His 1982 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay established the market between cheap and super premium wines. By the 2000s, it was one of the most pop...

Ceremony marks the 150th anniversary of Avondale Mine Disaster

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Historical Society was transported back in time to the 19th century on Sunday, as roughly a hundred people gathered on the site of the Avondale Mine Disaster to remember those lost in the tragic fire 150 years ago. “This is a great rurnout, this is something special,” said Stephen Kondrad, president of the Plymouth Historical Society. Kondrad’s wife, Mary Beth, served as the hostess of the proceedings. She is descended from a number of victims of the Avondale mine disaster. Kondrad opened the proceedings with a welcome and his opening remarks before turning the microphone over to Don Shappelle and Don Sennett, who played a stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace,” encouraging the crowd to sing along. Georgetta Potoski, the chairwoman of the board for the historical society, spoke next, offering some facts and figures about the men involved in the disaster. “We are remembering the lives of men who died bravely on our behalf, in the act of working for better lives for their families,” Potosky said. On Sept. 6, 1869, a huge fire erupted in the Avnodale mine shaft, just off of what is now U.S. Route 11 in Plymouth. One hundred and ten miners, mainly adult men bu...

15 game streaming services you can try before Google Stadia arrives

Streaming games from remote internet servers could be the future of the video game industry — or part of that future, anyhow. By removing the need to own a PC or console to play the latest, most demanding blockbuster games, the medium as a whole could become more accessible. That is, if you have a good internet connection. Google’s recent announcement of its Stadia game service has thrust this idea back into the spotlight, and when it launches later this year, it might be an interesting option for both newcomers and seasoned gamers who are curious about streaming games over the internet. But it’s hardly the first cloud gaming platform to debut. If you’re interested in streaming your own desktop PC games to your PC, Mac, phone, tablet, or console, you can try one of a variety of cloud gaming and in-home streaming options today. (Some of them are free!) If you’d prefer to stream games that you don’t already own, a few companies already have Netflix-like catalogs of games you can stream before Google Stadia arrives on the scene. The current cloud gaming marketplace is populated by recognizable gaming brands like Steam, Nvidia, and Sony. Alongside the big names is a gallery of start...

UAW GM strike: Auto parts shortage looms as strike goes into week five

As the UAW-GM strike stretches into week five, the parts pipeline stretching from factories to service techs fixing GM brands hasn’t gone dry – yet. This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. Car dealers are leaning on General Motors managers to find spare auto parts as the strike slows the output of oil filters, valves, rings and other items mechanics rely on to maintain the 30 million-plus GM vehicles on the nation’s roads. The pipeline stretching from factories to technicians working on GM’s Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands is far from dry, although car dealers and service managers report they regularly phone other dealers and salaried GM personnel in search of spare parts. “We’re starting to see parts in short supply,” said Russ Clark, general manager at Cadillac of Knoxville. ”That’s where we’re going to see it hurt most if the strike goes on for a couple of more weeks.” Even with the walkout edging up on week five, auto dealers remember this one isn’t quite as dire at that long one 21 years ago. There’s a reaso...

Rick Simpson Hemp Oil Medicine May Help Treat Cancer

Rick Simpson is a medical marijuana activist who has been providing people with information about the healing powers of cannabis oil medications for nearly a decade. Rick cured himself of a metastatic skin cancer back in 2003. Since then, he has devoted his life to spreading the truth about cannabis oil. Despite his progressive work with cancer patients, Rick Simpson has met an absurd amount of opposition from Canadian authorities, as well as pharmaceutical companies, government/health agencies, and UN offices, despite his claims to have successfully treated over 5,000 patients (free of charge). He believes that it is common to have all types of cancer and diseases cured with the use of high quality cannabis oil as the main method of treatment. Rick has reported treating patients with all types of conditions including, but not limited to, cancer, AIDS / HIV, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, leukemia, Crohn’s disease, depression, osteoporosis, psoriasis, insomnia, glaucoma, asthma, burns, migraines, regulation of body weight, chronic pain, and mutated cells (polyps, warts, tumors). For years, Rick Simpson has spread his message that cannabis can be used to treat differ...

Doctors accused moms of abusing their children. Our investigation raised questions about that

Just after 9 p.m. on a Sunday two years ago, with Hurricane Harvey’s flood waters filling her Houston home and more rain falling, Ajshay James climbed into a rescue boat, holding her daughter, Harper. A Houston Chronicle and NBC News investigation found that doctors trained to spot child abuse had in some instances overstated their ability to determine when a child had been harmed, triggering traumatic family separations. In response, some Texas lawmakers have begun calling for additional safeguards to protect families. Harper, not yet 2, had been in and out of hospitals her entire life. Born nearly four months early, she spent her first 16 weeks in an incubator, connected to a machine that pumped oxygen in and out of her still-developing lungs. Her skin was thin and fragile, like plastic wrap. Each time Harper’s breathing slowed dangerously in those early months, James cried and prayed as nurses rushed to revive her. When Harper finally left the hospital at five months, doctors sent her with a device to monitor her heart rate and breathing. After its alarm sounded a few weeks later, Harper underwent surgery at Texas Children’s, one of the nation’s top-ranked pediatric hospital...
