REVIEW – We’re fans of pens here at The Gadgeteer, and personally I like pens that are unique in style and other design elements.  The Spoke Designs Spoke Pen is one such writing instrument, with its machined, slotted body, magnetic cap, and other features.  I felt very fortunate that Brian Conti, founder of Spoke Designs, offered to send me a prototype review sample of the Spoke Pen—which is in its final few days of a crowdfunded Kickstarter campaign as of this writing.  Let’s check it out!  Gadget on! The Spoke Pen is, “a streamlined geometric-deco style in a world of minimal cylindrical machined pens.” As mentioned initially and seen in the image above, I was sent a Spoke Pen prototype to review, and I was super excited to receive this.  I don’t know if this is indicative of the final packaging.  The Spoke Pen was inside a plastic tube, which was inside a foam pouch with a Spoke Design logo decal taped to the outside. A bit of background: the Kickstarter campaign that is bringing Spoke Pen to life is a collaboration between Brian Conti of Spoke Design and Brian Dowdy of The Pen Addict. It would be challenging to have a better combo of proven ability to deliver products to mar...

Foul-mouthed 12-year old boys. That’s how “Good Boys” has been marketed, and not without reason. The MPAA assigned it an “R” rating, for “strong crude sexual content, drug and alcohol material, and language throughout – all involving tweens.” But the constant “F” word functions here more as a veneer of toughness than language we care about. The movie’s justifiable box office success is due not to the F bomb, but to a smart script by Lee Eisenberg and director Gene Stupnitsky (writers for many episodes of TV’s “The Office”) that carefully delineates the main characters, and to the film’s moving exploration of innocence, not quite lost. The “Bean Bag Boys,” as the three protagonists call themselves, are a gang—the pre-teen word “club” might be more accurate—of 6th-grade outsiders who revel in their togetherness. While seeki...

(Credit: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) Authorities are warning buyers about dangerous infant sleepers and other items that T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods continued to sell after they were recalled, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The 19 items had been recalled between 2014 and 2019, and include Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers that were found to be responsible for at least 30 infant deaths, authorities said Tuesday in a news release. The commission said about 1,200 units of recalled products were sold to consumers across the country. “Consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately and contact the recalling firms to receive the remedy listed in the recall, which is either a refund, replacement or repair,” authorities said. The items also include portable speakers that can leak hydrogen gas and burst, watches that can detach and pose the risk of chemical burns when wet, childre...

From Casual to Fine Dining, 13 F&B Concepts from Around the Globe

Garden Hot PotChengdu, China To create the ethereal Garden Hot Pot, locally based firm MUDA-Architects took the risky step of eliminating walls as a means to seamlessly immerse guests into the landscape. Surrounding a lotus pond within a eucalyptus forest in Chengdu, China, the restaurant positions diners as close to nature as possible. “Pillars and boards hide the building in the woods, letting it gently [merge] with the site and delineating the shape of the lake in a light and peaceful way,” says founding partner and principal architect Yun Lu. The slightly raised platform of the restaurant is made of anti-corrosive wood, while its galvanized steel roof is coated with white fluorocarbon paint. Both are meant to evoke the steam and smoke rising from the boiling pots built into the tables, “which makes the construction look like steam curling between the pillars and trees,” he adds. Impressively, not one tree was cut down during construction, and the surrounding plants have all been fully integrated into the site.HirokiPhiladelphia For the highly anticipated Japanese restaurant Hiroki, found in the city’s Fishtown neighborhood, local design firm Method Co. took a less is more ap...

Do ‘environmentally responsible’ products help the planet? Or do they just get us to buy more stuff? | News | Eco-Business

Abbey Dufoe, a 28-year-old web producer in New Jersey, cares about the environment. On the weekends, she and her partner go on beach hikes and pick up trash. She buys in bulk to reduce packaging waste and tries to recycle as much as she can. She is also a fan of “green” products like metal straws, tote bags and reusable water bottles, and buys her clothes and shoes from companies that claim to make environmentally and socially conscious products. And, as much as she can, Dufoe tries not to use disposable items in order to reduce her contribution to our planet’s burgeoning plastic waste problem. “It’s basically just about lowering my footprint,” Dufoe says, “because I know I have to buy this stuff anyway.” Or does she? One of the big criticisms facing the practice of conscious consumerism — purchasing environmentally and socially responsible products — is whether, in the name of sustainability, we sometimes end up buying even more stuff. Take Dufoe’s reusable straw. She says it’s easy to keep clean and to remember to carry with her. However, she admits, she also has a couple of other reusable straws at home. “We are putting more materials out into the world,” says Emma Rose Cohe...

Because “Deceptively Modern Jewelry: 1940s–1980” goes back in the vault on Nov. 15. Hosted by the esteemed antique and estate jewelry A La Vieille Russie (ALVR) in New York City, it’s a small gathering of treasures you can easily squeeze in on a lunch break or in between appointments in the Diamond District. Afterward, you’ll skip your way through the rest of the day, uplifted by what you’ve seen, even on the grayest of November days. (Magnify this feeling by a 1,000 if you actually buy something!) The 70 designs are inspiring, wildly luxe, exceedingly rare, and perhaps most interesting of all, completely relevant in a modern-day context. ALVR director Peter Schaffer curated the works and also included some couture fashion from the represented decades in collaboration with couture and vintage fashion dealer Katy Kane. Featured jewelry designers include Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Mauboussin, Verdura, Pierre Sterlé, Angela Cummings, David Thomas, and Andrew Grima, among others. There are quite a few matching sets, most notably an engraved group of bracelets and earrings that is so perfectly 1970s glam (pictured below). It’s by master 20th-century jewelry artist Georges L’En...

Eskom’s power problem could get a whole lot worse

An electricity-supply crisis is looming in South Africa that could make intermittent outages in the past few months seem trivial by comparison. Eskom, which supplies almost all the nation’s power, will lose more than a quarter of its current generating capacity over the next decade as it shuts ageing coal-fired plants. Replacing that output and adding capacity needed to meet rising demand will take years and cost more than R1 trillion, according to government estimates. The problem is likely to worsen exponentially after 2030 as more plants reach retirement age. While Eskom is building two new plants, Medupi and Kusile, they are running years behind schedule and billions of rand over budget, and won’t be enough to plug the supply gap. The utility has limited scope to invest in more projects because it isn’t making enough money to cover its operating costs and service its debt, which had ballooned to R419 billion at the end of its last financial year. The government has said it will look to private investors to help fund new plants and step up purchases of renewable energy from independent producers, which have added 3 876 megawatts of capacity to the national grid since 2011. Rep. Severin’s Backpacks for Buddies Program Receives 1st Installment

In October, State Representative Dave Severin announced the launch of “Backpacks for Buddies”, a donation drive seeking new backpacks filled with overnight care items to be given to children placed in emergency foster care. “I don’t know if we need 5 or 500. I think we’re going to find out that the challenge is bigger than what we realize. But, we’re going to meet the challenge.” Severin says his  Backpacks for Buddies drive collects new backpacks – preferably gender neutral – as well as items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo. If you or someone you know would like to donate to Backpacks for Buddies click here or call Severin’s office in Marion at 618-440-5090. You could get a big TV or a bunch of smart gadgets this Black Friday, but one of the best ways to save this year is by cashing in on one of these impressive mattress deals. Worried about taking the leap and buying a new mattress online without ever laying down on it? Don’t worry, all major brands offer at least a 100-night trial (if not more). Sleep on it for a month or two, see if you like it, and if not, get your money back. The Leesa is my go-to mattress when anyone asks which bed-in-a-box they should get. It keeps you cool. It’s not overly cushiony and it’s not unforgivingly firm. It’s the Goldilocks of mail order mattresses. What I love about Leesa is that no matter what the conditions I’m sleeping in, I wake up refreshed and feeling, not just good, but great. The memory foam is supportive in all the right places and the cooling gel actually does what it...

Clashes erupt as Hong Kong protest targets Chinese traders

Violent clashes broke out after several thousand people marched in Hong Kong against traders from mainland China in what is fast becoming a summer of unrest in the semi-autonomous territory. After issuing a warning, police on Saturday moved forward to disperse the crowd of mostly young protesters who say peaceful demonstrations have failed to bring about change. Police used pepper spray and batons. In panicky scenes, fleeing protesters scrambled over each other, some falling to the ground. Some had donned protective masks and helmets ahead of the confrontation. Major demonstrations in the past month against a proposal to change extradition laws that would allow Hong Kong suspects to stand trial in mainland China have reawakened other movements in the city. Thousands marched last weekend against middle-aged mainland women who sing loudly and dance somewhat provocatively in a public park. The protests have a common refrain: Hong Kong’s government, led by a non-democratically elected chief executive, is not addressing the people’s concerns. Walking behind a banner that read “Strictly enforce the law, stop cross-border traders,” Saturday’s marchers passed by pharmacies and cosmetic...
