Juniors Lose to Drumkeerin in Div 3 Shield Final

There are days when you win games you should have lost and other times you lose games you should have won and certainly last Sunday’s game in Kiltubrid was one of the latter. The scoreline of 3-3 to 0-9 gives a hint of this but when you add in that we had thirteen wides to Drumkeerin’s three all is confirmed. That’s not taking from Drumkeerin’s win, they held to the bitter end and when the penalty came to put them two points up with only two minutes remaining, we just did not have time to come back.

It was a good game all through and the critics of football in December would have second thoughts on Sunday as the weather was good, the Kiltubrid pitch was good and there was wonderful effort from both teams. We led by 0-6 to 0-1 well into the first half when we really should have been far more ahead. Then disaster befell us when a ball dropped just under the crossbar for a Drumkeerin goal. When Drumkeerin got their second goal after half time we still fought back and were leading by a point with minutes remaining. We really were in terrible hard luck for goals and points at this stage. Wayne McKeon and Anton Arandelovic just missed by inches and then the real misfortune of the penalty when there was not time to come back. It certainly was hard luck from a Ballinamore point of view but all credit to Drumkeerin for never giving up and taking it in the end.

Foireann: Padraig McKeon, Kevin Prior, Gavin Brennan, Kevin O’Connor, Philip Murphy, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Naoise Hayden, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Wayne McKeon (0-2), Shane Murphy (0-3), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Ronan O’Rourke, Alan Prior (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Anthony Curran. Subs: Finnian Sharpley for A Curran, Ray Logan for R O’Rourke, James McWeeney for F Sharpley.

Comhbhrón

The club would like to extend sympathy to the Moran family, Church St on the death of Bridie Moran last week. Bridie was well acquainted with all the happenings in the GAA in Ballinamore, Leitrim and throughout the country particularly from the involvement of her husband Tommy in every aspect of the GAA. Her sons Garrett and Éamon played football and hurling for Ballinamore and were also involved in Scór. Daughter Aoife won an All Ireland in Scór na nÓg in 1997 in Novelty Act. Bridie was a very enthusiastic golfer and enjoyed the game up until late summer of this year. She enjoyed a visit to the slot machines in Bundoran as much as others would enjoy a day in Croke Park for the All Ireland Final.  Poker, whist or a bet on anything were among her passions. Fittingly her removal and funeral were the biggest seen in Ballinamore in a long time. To Tommy, Maureen, Garrett, Éamon, Aoife and her mother, Mary, we offer our sympathy. Go ndéana Dia trócaire uirthí.

Christmas Lotto

Our special Christmas Lotto will be in Smiths Siopa Ól on this Thursday with hosts of additional prizes.

The big New Year draw is on Saturday 30 December in Prior’s Lounge. If you havn’t got your ticket yet, they are available from all club members. Sellers are asked to have their tickets sold before Christmas if possible.

Charity Event on Wednesday next

Some clubs have a St Stephen’s Day married v singles, or men against the women or some sort of novelty event for charity. Sean O’Heslins havn’t tried this yet (They have tried everything else) but this year they are going to have something along those lines on the Wednesday after Christmas. Watch out for the posters and the e-mails for further details.

Buíochas do Charraig Álainn !!

Our Christmas present came from Carrigallen this year. As we trundled out of Kiltubrid on Sunday after losing a game we seemed to have in the bag, the good news was that Carrigallen’s defeat of Glencar/Manorhamilton means that we are back in the pot for Division 2 League honours and promotion. We will meet Glenfarne/Kilty in the New Year.

Div 3 Shield Final

Our Juniors play in the Div 3 Shield Final in Kiltubrid on Sunday at 2.00. We play Drumkeerin.

Juniors beat Aughawillan

Our Juniors are in the final of the Div 3 Shield next weekend but on Sunday last they had to face Aughawillan in wet and windy conditions to finalise their programme of games. The outcome was of no consequence to Ballinamore but it was of importance to Aughawillan in the relegation stakes. We had a fairly comfortable win, leading by 1-6 to 0-1 at half time. The goal was the turning point and it came when a ball hit the crossbar and seemed to be going wide. Alan Prior gave it a very cute flick and put it in the way of Shane Murphy who finished it to the net. Indeed Sane Murphy’s scores were the difference between the teams. Aughawillan did come more into the game in the second half but we won in the end by 1-9 to 1-3.

Foireann: Padraig McKeon, Kevin O’Connor, Gavin Brennan, Kevin Prior, Naoise Hayden, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Philip Murphy, Wayne McKeon (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Ronan O’Rourke, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Shane Murphy (1-4), Alan Prior, Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Anthony Curran (0-1).

Scór na nÓg

Our competitors did very well in Scór na nÓg on Saturday night and we qualified for the County Finals in Rince Foirne, Amhranaíocht, Bailéad Ghrúpa, Nuachleas, and Rince Seit. We had two teams in Rince Foirne as follows Michelle Reynolds, Shauna Cullen, Johanne Keenaghan, Aisling Maxwell, Sarah Sweeney, Niamh Griffin, Orla McWeeney and Maria O Reilly and this group qualified for the County final.  Also dancing for Ballinamore hurling club were Eadaoin McGourty, Niamh McGourty, Ellen Wrynn, Maeve Gleeson, Alison Sweeney, Caoimhe McCaffrey, Emily Sweeney and Grainne Griffin.  Aisling Maxwell and Aisling Duignan represented us in Amhranaiocht Aonair and Aisling Maxwell goes forward to the next stage. Our young Tráth na gCeist team of Cyril Smith, Kevin Banks, and Jack Bagge didn’t have all the answers but they have many more years ahead of them and the experience gained will be helpful in the future, as they have loads of ability.  In Ballad Group Aisling Duignan, Katie Duignan, Lauren McGrory and Ciara Martin did the honours for us in this section.  The novelty act team included former all Ireland winners and some new faces, which included, Seamus Donnelly, John Fanning, Catherine Smith, Lisa Duignan, Claire Fanning, Mark McGrory, Eoin McHugh and Stephen Beirne.   The Set Dancers for Sean O Heslins were Michelle Reynolds, Shauna Cullen, Johanne Keenaghan, Aisling Maxwell, Sarah Sweeney, Niamh Griffin, Orla McWeeney and Maria O Reilly.  Dancing for Ballinamore Hurling club were Eadaoin McGourty, Niamh McGourty, Ellen Wrynn, Maeve Gleeson, Alison Sweeney, Niamh Flynn, Siobhan McTague and Laura Crevan and both go through to the County final in Manorhamilton on January 7.

Lotto – Won by Alice Costello

There was great excitement in Jackie’s on Monday night when Alice Costello from Ardrum won the jackpot of €10,700. Amazingly it is the second time the jackpot has been won by the Costello family. The numbers drawn were 16237405. The house draw was won by Seán Mac Conduibh and a bottle of whiskey sponsored by Jackie was won by Tommy Gilheany. The last time the jackpot went the draw was also in Jackie’s so it may be the lucky pub. Next week’s draw will be in Lawrences and the Pota Óir will be at €3,000.

Christmas Lotto

Our special Christmas Lotto will be in Smiths Siopa Ól on Thursday of next week, with hosts of additional prizes.

There was also great praise for the development work undertaken in recent years particularly the pitch development. The fact that a Connacht Final could have been played on Sunday last despite torrential rain for days was proof that a great job has been done on the pitch

Seán Reynolds received a serious injury at work recently and is faced with a long period of recovery. On Friday night many of those involved with him in ladies and underage football are organising a function in Prior’s Lounge. We would urge people to support this event which will start at 10.30. 1956 Celebrations

Friday night in Gay Priors was a memorable night for all present as the Club honoured the members of the 1956 Championship winning team. 50 years on, it was great to see so many of the team present for the occasion. Before introducing the team, Tommy Moran brilliantly recalled some of the events of the year during which we regained the County honours, after some 17 years had elapsed from the previous title. Great work was done by Chairman, Conor Harte and Secretary Paddy O’Connor, in order to bring the night to fruition, and I’m sure the members of the 1956 were delighted with the opportunity to gather and share stories of years gone by. Well done to all.

Another title for Oughteragh Gaels

Oughteragh Gaels retained their crown in the final of the U-21 Championship, as they ran out winners against Manorhamilton on a final score of   2-14 to 1-6 on Saturday evening in Drumshanbo. It was a much closer game than the score would suggest and the Gaels only killed the game off in the last 15 minutes or so with some fine scores. Well done to all involved. The team was as follows: Joe Murphy, Kevin Prior, Wayne Gilgunn, David Duignan, Wayne McKeon 0-4, Barry McWeeney, Liam Ferguson 0-1, Anton Arandelovic 0-3, Fergal McManus, Ronan O’Rourke 1-2, Cathal Egan 1-1, Gavin Sammon, Shane Murphy 0-1, Finnian Sharpley 0-1, Vincent Mulvey 0-1. Subs used were Damien Gilheaney, Philip Murphy & Naoise Hayden.

Seniors Lose

Our Seniors were beaten by Glenfarne in the second last game in the race for promotion to Division 1 of the League, on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-5. Belcoo GAA Grounds was the venue for the decider, on a day that was not conducive to fancy football. Heavy wind and rain played havoc and both sides found it difficult to adapt to conditions but Glenfarne were the better team on the day. With one game to play against St. Mary’s, probably next weekend (see fixtures), promotion to Division 1, an unlikely prospect. Team & Scorers: Colm Brennan, David Duignan, Paddy McLoughlin, Johnny McWeeney, Ruairi Sullivan, Joey Honeyman, Anthony McTeague, Ray Logan, Paul McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty, Ciaran Murray, Rory O’Rourke, Finnian Sharpley 0-4, Paul Prior 0-1, Seanie Murray. Subs, Gavin Brennan, Ronan O’Rourke, Ronan Sharpley.

Seniors Lose

Our seniors were beaten by Carrigallen on Sunday morning in the Park, on a scoreline of 1-8 to 0-8. This was a vital game for both teams in the fight for promotion to division 1 league. Despite leading for most of the game, Carrigallen won out with a lucky goal with seven minutes to go, which proved the difference at the final whistle. Team & Scorers: Michael Dolan, John McWeeney, Paddy McLoughlin, David Duignan, Ruairi Sullivan, Joey Honeyman, Anthony McTeigue, Ray Logan (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Brian Cafferty, Rory O’Rourke, Paul McLoughlin, Sean Murray (0-2), Paul Prior (1-4), Finnian Sharpley. Subs: Anthony Curran & Shane Murphy.

Division 3 win

Our second team continued there winning streak in the closing stages of the division 3 shield beating Drumkeerin in the Park on Sunday morning by 1-11 to 1-10. It was great to see the players turn out in great numbers, the two subs used in the preceding senior game, Anthony Curran & Shane Murphy, were the only players called on to play both games. It was a tight game throughout but we showed great spirit and fight to come out on top in the end. Team & Scorers: Pauric McKeon, Kevin Prior, Gavin Brennan, Joe McTeigue, Philip Murphy, Fred Walsh, Naoise Hayden, Cormac O Suilleabhain, Wayne McKeon (0-4), Shane Murphy, James McWeeney (1-2), Ronan O’Rourke (0-2), Anthony Curran (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-2), Alan Prior. Scéalta na Seachtaine - 6 Samhain  2006

Under 21s Progress to final

Oughteragh Gaels are just one step away from being County Champions after a rather easy win over St Francis’ last Saturday. This was their second good victory in two weeks and they certainly are playing great stuff. At half time they led by 0-7 to 0-1 and really it would take a dramatic change in the second half to produce anything other than a Gaels win. As on the previous week against Mohill, Oughteragh Gaels could have won by more, so great was their dominance. It finished 0-14 to 0-4.

Foireann: (Aughnasheelin players indicated by A) Joseph Murphy, Kevin Prior, Wayne Gilgunn (A), David Duignan, Wayne McKeon, Barry McWeeney (A), Liam Ferguson (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Fergal McManus (A), Ronan O’Rourke, Cathal Egan (A) (0-1), Gavin Sammon (A)(0-1), Shane Murphy (0-2), Finnian Sharpley (0-5), Vincent Mulvey (A) (0-2). Subs: James McWeeney for R O’Rourke.

Juniors Win

Our Juniors won their second game in Tier 2 of Division 3 when they defeated Gortletteragh on Sunday. James McWeeney was in scoring form, getting seven points of the total and Adrian Gallogly got three. With two wins out of two, we are probably safe from relegation but the target is to win the Division 2 Shield. There are two games to go, against Aughawillan and Drumkeerin. Final score on Sunday Sean O’Heslins 0-12 Gortletteragh 1-6.

Foireann: Padraig McKeon, Gavin Brennan, Joe Honeyman, Freddie Walsh, Philip Murphy, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Liam Ferguson, Ray Logan, Anthony Curran, Alan Prior, James McWeeney (0-7), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-3), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin. Scéalta na Seachtaine - 30 Deireadh Fo 2006

Under 21s beat Mohill

Oughteragh Gaels had a very impressive win over Mohill on Saturday in the Quarter Final of the Under 21 Championship. Mohill, who won three Minor Championships in a row from 2003-2005, would have been fancied to progress in this year’s under 21, especially with their great senior victory to their backs. However, Oughteragh Gaels were way the better team and really should have won by even more than seven points. There were great displays from Wayne Gilgunn, David Duignan, Barry McWeeney, Wayne McKeon, Liam Ferguson in defence,  Anton Arandelovic and  Fergal McManus in midfield and Finnian Sharpley and Shane Murphy especially in attack but everyone contributed their fair share. At half-time Gaels led by 0-5 to 0-2 and the worry was they were against the strong wind for the second half. They started the second half with five very bad wides in succession before the first point came. However, from there to the finish it was all Oughteragh Gaels and it finished 0-11 to 0-4.

Oughteragh Gaels: Joseph Murphy, Kevin Prior, Wayne Gilgunn, David Duignan, Wayne McKeon (0-2), Barry McWeeney, Liam Ferguson, Anton Arandelovic (0-3), Fergal McManus, Ronan O’Rourke, Cathal Egan, Gavin Sammon, Shane Murphy (0-3), Finnian Sharpley (0-3), Vincent Mulvey. Subs: James McWeeney for R O’Rourke, Philip Murphy for V Mulvey.

Under 16s Lose in Final replay

Our under 16s put in another wonderful performance in the replay of the under 16 championship final on Thursday last. At half time it was 0-2 each. A couple of injuries inhibited our progress a bit and St Mary’s edged it by 0-9 to 0-6 at the finish. St Mary’s were the stronger team and when you consider the Ballinamore lads were not in the hunt as under 14s two years ago, this was a great performance. Thanks to all the supporters who made the replay and who supported the team through the year. A speedy recovery to Stephen Beirne who was injured during the game. Congratulations to St Mary’s on their deserved victory.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, David Leyden, Éamon Walsh, Shane Moran, Seamus Donnelly, Enda Quinn, Jim McTague Capt, John Christie, Brian Beirne, Conor McTague, Finbar Smith, Barry Flynn, Stephen Beirne, Shane McWeeney. Subs: Stephen McTague for Barry Flynn, John Fanning for Stephen Beirne.

Defibrillators

Following a public meeting last week to discuss the issues of defibrillators and their provision at strategic points in the town, the executive has decided to donate the entire proceeds of next week-end’s Lotto to the fund for purchase of defibrillators. This is a very important issue and the provision of these pieces of equipment could save lives. Indeed places like football pitches are prime locations where they could be needed. You are asked to be especially generous to Lotto sellers this weekend to support this worthy cause.

General Club meeting

Scéalta na Seachtaine - 23 Deireadh Fo 2006

Under 16s draw in Thrilling Final

In most dramatic fashion our under 16s drew with St Mary’s in the under 16 championship final on Sunday last.  With time up we were two points up but St Mary’s got a penalty, which they scored. Then well into extra time Jim McTague got the equalizer, to give what was probably the fairest result. At half time it was 1-3 to 0-2 in St Mary’s favour. In the second half we got a penalty which John Christie scored. Overall it was a great game with the replay eagerly awaited. This Thursday Drumshanbo is the venue and 4.45 is the time. There was great support in Cloone on Sunday and hopefully it will be the same on Thursday. Our thanks also to Marie Bradley, physio, who attended.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, David Leyden, Éamon Walsh, Shane Moran, Seamus Donnelly, Enda Quinn, Jim McTague (0-3), Stephen Beirne, Shane McWeeney, John Christie (1-0), Finbar Smith (0-1), Eoin McHugh, Conor McTague, Brian Beirne (1-0). Subs: Dean Creaven, Stephen McTague, Barry Flynn, Andrew Burns, John Fanning.

Fixtures

There may be under 21 or other adult fixtures at the week-end. Please see fixtures for details.

Juniors Beat Aughavas

The first round in the second tier of the Division 3 League took place in Aughavas on Sunday. After a close first half we pulled away gradually and were comfortable winners in the end. In the first half Alan Prior and Anton Arandelovic got two points each and Finnian Sharpley and Anthony Curran one each. While we led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half time, Aughavas had the greater number of wides and should have been level at least. As the second half progressed, Anton Arandelovic and Anthony Curran dominated at midfield, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin and Wayne McKeon were particularly impressive in the backs and Finnian Sharpley and Shane Murphy were in great form in attack. Finnian scored two points from frees and one from play, Shane Murphy got two from play and Anton, David Earley and Ronan O’Rourke got one each to leave us winners by –0-14 to 0-6.

Foireann: Adrian Smith, Kevin O’Connor, Freddie Walsh, Kevin Prior, Wayne McKeon, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Philip Murphy, Aidan Galligan, Anton Arandelovic (0-3), James McWeeney, Finnian Sharpley (0-4), Shane Murphy (0-2), Alan Prior (0-2), Anthony Curran (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke (0-1). Subs: David Earley (0-1), Gordon Hughes.

Girls beaten in Junior B League Final

On Sunday last Sean O’Heslins played Dromahair in the League Final in Kiltubrid, a repeat of the championship final two weeks earlier. Dromahair again came out on top but this was a better display by the O’Heslins girls, despite missing Carol O’Connor and Maeve Murphy through injury. The game was overshadowed by the injury to Deborah Gilheaney. Deborah was severely concussed in an accidental collision during the game and had to be taken by ambulance to Sligo General Hospital. We wish Deborah a speedy recovery and hope to see her on the playing fields soon again. It was upsetting for the players and we would like to thank the Dromahair players and mentors for their support and help as Deborah was being brought away. Thanks also to Marie Bradley for the work she done with Deborah.

With the football year now drawn to a close a special word of thanks goes to Seán Reynolds and Aisling Flaherty who stuck by the girls throughout the year. Thanks also to the players for their commitment and to all the supporters also. Many thanks also to Emma Reynolds who prepared the notes for inclusion in the Leitrim Observer and for the web site.

Team on Sunday: Aisling Flaherty, Lauren McGrory, Áine Martin, Katie Duignan, Kirby Gilgunn, Claire Fanning, Michelle Fanning, Carmel McCartin, Orla McWeeney, Kate McTague, Deborah Gilheaney, Caroline McGrory (Capt), Catherine Smith. Sub: Erin Gilheany for Deborah Gilheany, Laura Brennan, Emma Reynolds, Aisling Duignan, Ciara O’Dowd, Maeve Murphy, Carol O’Connor.

 Seniors beat Glencar/Manorhamilton

There was only one point in it at the finish but it could be a hugely significant win for our seniors before the year is out. This was our first game in the second tier of the league and a victory, especially against Glencar/Manor was a great start. We dominated the first half and led by 1-6 to 0-4 at the break. In fact we led by six points at one stage but Glencar/Manor got the last two points of the half. Finnian Sharpley and Anton Arandelovic got two points from frees, Brian Cafferty got the next, Anton pointed the next free. Sean Murray then got two good points from play and Sean also scored a goal from a penalty.

We did not play as well in the second half and indeed had Glencar/Manorhamilton taken their chances from a few late frees they might well have drawn at least. It was Finnian Sharpley who saved us in the second half as he scored all of our four second half points, two from play and two from frees. It finished 1-10 to 1-9.

Foireann: Michael Dolan, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Paul McLoughlin, John McWeeney, Anthony McTague, Ciaran Murray, Joe Honeyman, Anton Arandelovic (0-2) Thomas McLoughlin, Paul McLoughlin, Rory O’Rourke, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-5), Anthony Curran, Sean Murray (1-2). Subs: Ray Logan, Shane Ferguson, James McWeeney.

Schools Team Make History

St Patrick’s Boys National School won the Leitrim INTO mini sevens in Drumshanbo on Thursday last. What made this win even more exciting was that they became the first school to win three consecutive finals in the history of the competition. On their way to the final Ballinamore came through the first round by beating Aughnasheelin, Carrigallen and Aughawillan in closely contested games. The final rounds were played in Drumshanbo on Thursday last, 12 October. Ballinamore lost their first game to Drumshanbo and then beat Kinlough. However, as Kinlough beat Drumshanbo, each team had won a game each but Ballinamore went through to the final on score difference.

In the final Ballinamore came up against a strong Annaduff team. Annaduff had beaten Mohill, Carrick on Shannon and Leitrim in earlier rounds and they beat Fenagh and Gortletteragh on the final day. In the final itself, Annaduff and Ballinamore finished level. The game went to two periods of extra time. In the first period Luke Murphy kicked over the deciding point, when he got a long-range pass from Colm O’Reilly. Ballinamore were kept in the game through tremendous defending and brilliant goalkeeping from Dara McNiffe and they went on to win by one point. Amid great excitement the cup was presented to the winning Captain, Jack Cullen. Jack has figured on all three winning teams. Ballinamore will now go on to the Connacht Finals in May.

Foireann: The panel was: Dara McNiffe, Anthony Maguire, Brian Banks, Jack Cullen, Nathan Gallagher, Colm O’Reilly, Cian McCaffrey, Luke Murphy, Conor Moran, Donal Feely.(See Team photo in Pictures/Underage)

Under 16 Girls win Championship Final

The Sean O’Heslins girls played Aughnasheelin in the Under 16 Final in Fenagh on Saturday. On a lovely evening for playing football this turned out to be a very successful event for the O’Heslins girls. After a couple of wides from both sides it took a great goal from Erin Gilheany to settle the girls and from then on they played free-flowing football. Points from Katie Duignan, Deborah Gilheaney and a further goal from Ciara O’Dowd left the girls in control at half-time by 2-3 to 0-2. In the second half Katie Duignan and Catherine Smith were in control at midfield. Katie, Ciara and Erin added further points and a spectacular point from Deborah Gilheaney followed. The final score was a goal from Erin Gilheany and this left the final score at 3-9 to 0-6.

Louise Farry had a fine game in goals and got great assistance from her backs; Emma Reynolds, Lauren McGrory and Captain Claire Fanning who led by example. Erin Gilheany, Deborah Gilheaney and Ciara O’Dowd were in great scoring form. This has to go down as a great all-round team performance from the entire panel. The girls would like to thank all who came out to support them all through the year. Thanks also to Seamus McTague and his family for preparing the pitch for the home games. After the match it was nice to hear the Captain, Claire Fanning, starting her speech in Irish. There were great celebrations afterwards with the parade through the town and a fine meal was provided in the Manhattan.

Foireann: Louise Farry, Emma Reynolds, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Katie Duignan (0-3), Catherine Smith, Erin Gilheany (2-2), Deborah Gilheany (0-2), Ciara O’Dowd (1-2), Gillian Leyden, Aisling Duignan, Sinéad Flynn, Róisín McTague, Ciara Martin.

Hurlers Lose to Manorhamilton

Our senior hurlers lost in the semi-final to Manorhamilton on Saturday. Given that their preparation was virtually nil and a good few players were missing, it was an achievement to field at all. Manorhamilton led by 1-6 to 1-2 at half time with the goal coming from Thomas McLoughlin and the points from Mike Horgan and Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin. However, an early second half goal from Manorhamilton set us back again. Minutes later Thomas McLoughlin hit the net again and then the revival started. Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin hit four points in a row and suddenly it was 2-7 to 2-6, only a point behind. Then disaster struck, two quick goals for Manorhamilton and really that was that. It finished 4-9 to 2-7.

Best performances came from Adrian Smith, Cathal McCrann, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Finnian Sharpley and Thomas McLoughlin. Foireann: Conor Harte, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Ciaran Maxwell, David Duignan, Kevin O’Connor, Adrian Smith, Mike Horgan (0-1), Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-6), Cathal McCrann, Tommy McCormack, Adrian Gallogly, Finnian Sharpley, Paul McLoughlin, Thomas McLoughlin (2-0), Sean McCartin. Ladies Lose in Junior B Championship Final

Sean O’Heslins Ladies played Dromahair in Drumshanbo on Sunday last in the 13-a-side Junior Championship Final. Unfortunately for the second year running this turned out to be a disappointing day for the young girls. After a promising first half the girls never really got going in the second half. There was only a point in it at half time but Dromahair came out stronger in the second half with the strong wind behind them and scored some great points. In fairness to the girls they kept going to the end but it just wasn’t their day. The girls would like to thank those who came out to support them and hope that when the meet Dromahair again in two weeks time that they can turn the tables and come away with a win. We wish Dromahair the best of luck next year in Junior A.

Foireann: Carol O’Connor, Claire Fanning, Áine Martin, Katie Duignan, Kirby Gilgunn, Maeve Murphy, Michelle Fanning, Rowena O’Rourke, Orla McWeeney, Deborah Gilheaney (0-1), Kate McTague (0-1), Caroline McGrory (0-1), Carmel McCartin (1-1), Lauren McGrory, Catherine Smith, Erin Gilheany, Emma Reynolds, Laura Brennan, Aisling Duignan, Aisling Flaherty, Aoife Smith.

Under 16 Girls

Sean O’Heslins girls played Annaduff in Ballinamore last Tuesday week in the Under 216 Semi-final. O’Heslins got off to great start and the score at half time was 2-7 to 0-1. They came out even more determined in the second half and won by 3-10 t 0-7.

Foireann: Louise Farry, Lauren McGrory, Claire Fanning, Emma Reynolds, Catherine Smith, Katie Duignan (0-3), Erin Gilheany (0-3), Deborah Gilheany (1-2), Ciara O’Dowd (2-2), Gillian Leyden, Aisling Duignan, Sinead Flynn, Róisín McTague, Ciara Martin, Bronagh Grey. The Final is on this Saturday at 5.00 in Fenagh against Aughnasheelin

Cluiche Ceannais Maith

Last Sunday’s County Final was the best in many a long day. It really was an outstanding game and a credit to both sides. Congratulations to Mohill on putting in such an exceptional performance after a terrible start. When you lose by a point in a county final it is a killer, so commiserations to Naomh Muire. Not forgetting the Intermediate Final which was also a thriller. It was overall a great day for Leitrim football. Like last year we can say we were beaten along the way by the county champions.

 Seniors win Seanie Tubman Cup

On Saturday last we played Aughnasheelin in the annual Seanie Tubman Cup, a competition dedicated to the late Seanie who played for the Aughnasheelin Club. It was a good close game and we were fortunate to survive the last few minutes when Aughnasheelin had a few chances to goal, but two wonderful saves from Colm Brennan in the goals brought us safely through. At half time we led by 0-7 to 0-4 and it finished 0-13 to 0-11.Our thanks to the Aughnasheelin club for again inviting us to take part.

Team and scorers were: Colm Brennan, Rory O’Rourke, Patrick McLoughlin, John McWeeney, David Duignan, Joe Honeyman, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Thomas McLoughlin (0-4), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke, Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Seán Murray (0-2), Brian Cafferty (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-4), Anthony McTague. Celebrating 1956 Championship win

In 1956 Sean O’Heslins won the Leitrim Senior Football Championship after a barren period of 17 years. It was a turning point for the club and it is probably still the best remembered victory of all. Now, 50 years later, the club is getting all of those players together again for a celebration of that famous victory. According to our records, the following were the players and mentors involved: Dessie Kieran, Jackie Gallagher, Pete Prior, Frank McKeon, Patsy Wrynn, Josie Cryan, Pat Murray, Columba Cryan (Capt), Brian Sweeney, Christy McCaffrey, Mel Kelly, Paddy Dolan, Pat Crossan, Godfrey Roarty, Willie McKiernan, Paddy McGeehan, Mick O’Malley, Columba Martin, Jimmy Conway, Philip Gilheany, Sean Conlon, Sean Gaffney, Brendan Kieran. If we have anyone left out we would be glad to add them to the list, only let us know. The get together will be in 17 November. Details will be forwarded very shortly to all of those involved.

Under 16s keep on winning trail

Our under 16s drew with Drumreilly on Friday last to put them in a strong position to reach the Final. They have already beaten St Mary’s and Dromahair. This was a very good game with Drumreilly which we could have won but could have lost too as Drumreilly went ahead by a point with a minute to go. It fell to John Christie, who was man-of-the-match, to get a wonderful point at the finish. As well as John Christie there were exceptional performances from David Leyden, Jim McTague and Stephen Beirne. Final score 0-10 each.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Barry Flynn, David Leyden, Éamon Walsh, Matthew Murphy, Seamus Donnelly, Enda Quinn, John Christie (0-6), Jim McTague (0-1), Finbar Smith, Stephen Beirne, Shane Moran, Shane McWeeney (0-1), Conor McTague (0-1), Brian Beirne (0-1). Subs used Eoin McHugh, John Fanning.

Girls Under 16

Sean O’Heslins girls played Allen Gaels on Tuesday last in Ballinamore. It turned out to a tough game for the girls especially in the first half and they were only level at half time, 1-5 to 0-8 with Ciara O’Dowd getting the goal. However they managed to pull away in the second half and won by 2-15 to 1-9.

Team and Scorers: Louise Farry, Lauren McGrory (0-1), Claire Fanning, Gillian Leyden, Catherine Smith (1-2), Katie Duignan (0-3), Erin Gilheany (0-2), Deborah Gilheany (0-4), Ciara O’Dowd (1-2), Aisling Duignan (0-1), Róisín McTague, Sinead Flynn. Junior Girls in Championship Final

The junior girls played their championship semi-final against Fenagh in Aughnasheelin on Saturday last. This turned out to be their best performance this year. After getting off to a slow start, with Fenagh going ahead, Orla McWeeney got our first score and this seemed to settle the girls. Important goals came from Carmel McCartin and Deborah Gilheaney in the first half. O’Heslins led by 2-7 to 0-5 at half time. In the second half Fenagh came out more determined but a further two goals from Kate McTague and a spectacular one from Deborah Gilheaney left the final score at 4-11 to 0-7. This as a great all-round performance from Carol O’Connor in goals up to the forward line. The girls have now qualified to meet Dromahair in both Junior B Championship and League finals and we hope the girls get the support they deserve.

Team and scores: Carol O’Connor. Lauren McGrory, Claire Fanning, Áine Martin, Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan, Rowena O’Rourke, Michelle Fanning (0-1), Orla McWeeney (0-3), Deborah Gilheaney (2-4), Kate McTague (1-1), Caroline McGrory (0-2), Carmel McCartin (1-0), Erin Gilheany, Catherine Smith, Emma Reynolds, Aisling Duignan. The Championship final will be on 8 October and the League Final a week later on Sunday 15 October.

Under 16 Girls

Sean O’Heslins girls played Cloone on Tuesday last in Cloone. This turned out to be a tough match for O’Heslins and they were down by two points at half-time. In the first five minutes of the second half Cloone got a goal and a point which left O’Heslins behind by six points. The girls never gave up and with some excellent scores form Deborah Gilheaney they managed to win by 3-14 to 4-7 before the finish.

Foireann: Louise Farry, Claire Fanning (0-1), Katie Duignan (0-2), Emma Reynolds, Catherine Smith (0-3), Ciara O’Dowd, Erin Gilheany, Deborah Gilheany (3-6), Gillian Leyden (0-2), Aisling Duignan, Róisín McTague, Sinéad Flynn, Bronagh Grey. Next match is in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin on Tuesday 26 against Melvin Gaels.

Ballinamore man in Croke Park

Last Sunday Kevin Banks, son of Alan and Sharon, represented Ballinamore and Leitrim when he played in Croke Park in the INTO Mini Sevens before the big game. Kevin lined out at number 2 in the Mayo colours. Last week I incorrectly said that it was Kevin’s brother who was Brian going to Croke Park. I’m sure Brian didn’t mind, but my apologies to Kevin.

Seniors Out of Championship

We made our exit from the senior championship on Saturday last, losing by 2-9 to 1-4 to Mohill. Overall Mohill were the better team but the game was closer than the scoreline suggests. A rather soft goal in the first minute set us back but the team didn’t let this get them down and before ten minutes we were level at 1-1, thanks to a penalty and a free both scored by Paul Prior. However with just three points between the teams and half time approaching we were rocked by another Mohill goal.

In fairness the team played their hearths out in the second half and while we only got two points in the second half, Mohill only got three. The most telling point was that we failed to score from play over the entire hour with Paul Prior getting 1-2 from placed balls and Anton Arandelovic getting the other two points from frees. However one cannot forget the effort put in by the players, their manager and selectors over the past months. One needs that bit of luck to win any game and it didn’t fall our way on Saturday. The fact too is that Mohill are a good team and it will be no surprise if they are there or thereabouts when the Fenagh Cup is handed over in a few weeks time. We wish them the best of luck.

Foireann: Colm Brennan, Shane Ferguson, John McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, Ciaran Murray, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Thomas McLoughlin. Under 16 Girls

The under 16 girls played their first game in the 9 a side championship against Annaduff last Tuesday evening. On a terrible evening this turned out to be a close game with O’Heslins winning by 1-7 to 2-1. On Thursday evening the girls played Aughnasheelin.  On a fine evening this was a good game of football with great scores from both teams. Ballinamore won by 5-10 to 1-10. Team and scores in this game: Louise Farry, Claire Fanning, Capt., Lauren McGrory, Ciara O’Dowd (3-1), Catherine Smith, Katie Duignan (1-4), Emma Reynolds, Deborah Gilheaney (1-3), Erin Gilheany, Subs: Aisling Duignan, Ciara Martin, Sinéad Flynn, Bronagh Grey, Róisín McTague. Playing in Croke Park

Brian Banks will be playing in the INTO mini sevens games in Croke Park on Sunday. It is a wonderful occasion for a Ballinamore youngster to be playing in Páirc an Chrócaigh on All Ireland day. Bain taitneamh as Brian.

Ballinamore Men in Warwickshire and Pennsylvania

While our seniors and juniors were slogging it out in championship fare at home it is great to hear of Ballinamore men playing abroad. On Sunday last Peter McLoughlin from Tarmon won a Warwickshire Intermediate championship playing with St Mary’s from Wolverhampton. Peter played at midfield and score 1-1 in the final against Mitchell’s. Before he left for England Peter was the regular full back on our senior team. Well done Peter.

The previous weekend Finnian Sharpley and David Duignan were playing in the North American Finals. They had already won a Californian Championship with their club, The Celts. The North American Finals were in Philadelphia and they beat Philadelphia in the semi final but lost to Chicago in the Final. Great to see the Peil Gaelach being played in such far-flung places.

Senior Quarter Final

We play Mohill in the Senior Championship Quarter-final in Cloone on Saturday at 6.15. This is the biggest one so far and we urge all our supporters to be there.

Oughteragh Gaels are Minor Champions

The Minor Championship came to Ballinamore for the 21st time on Wednesday last when Oughteragh Gaels beat St Mary’s in the rain in Páirc Seán. Yes it was our twenty-first success, the last three coming by way of amalgamation with Aughnasheelin, as Oughteragh Gaels. In the end it was a fairly clear-cut victory but you really could not bank on it until Fergal Earley got a goal with some minutes left in the game.

The Gaels did not play well in the first half and struggled to remain in contention. Scores were hard to come by and we relied completely on the free-taking of Damien Gilheany and Wayne McKeon. Two points each from the two free-takers gave us four points to St Mary’s six at half time. Oughteragh Gaels performed magnificently in the second half, a different team entirely. Wayne McKeon score three points, the third a great one. John Christie got another great point and Gavin Sammon scored a beauty from near the end line. Damien Gilheany pointed a free and then Fergal Earley did great work to get to the ball ahead of the goalie and a defender to punch to the net. A point from Wayne McKeon put the icing on the cake.

Yes there was great jubilation as Oughteragh Gaels took the title again, the third time for this combination to take the Minor title, the other occasions being in 1993 and 2002. Congratulations to team mentors Gavin McWeeney, Padraig McKeon and Niall Murray.

Seniors Lose to St Mary’s

The fact that they were already through to the quarter finals plus the absence of a couple of players through injury may have affected our chances going into this game, but it certainly was a poor game with little or no atmosphere. St Mary’s also got a snap goal within minutes which didn’t help matters either. At half-time it was 2-4 to 0-3 and with nothing at stage only status one wasn’t expecting fireworks in the second half. Paul Prior kept putting over the odd free and at that stage it was time to give subs a chance as the inevitability of the outcome became clear. It finished 3-11 to 0-7 and after four weeks of inactivity it was good to get a game but the real test will be next weekend as we face Mohill in the quarter final.

Foireann: Colm Brennan, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Paddy McLoughlin, Johnny McWeeney, Liam Ferguson, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Anthony McTague, Paul Prior (0-4), Brian Cafferty, Rory O’Rourke, Adrian Gallogly, Ronan O’Rourke. Subs: Peter Dolan (0-1), James McWeeney, Shane Ferguson, Ronan Sharpley

Defeat in Junior A Championship Semi-Final

After a great run in the Junior A Championship, beating Mohill, Eslin and Aughavas we lost to a better team on Sunday. Annaduff weren’t just a better team, they really were in a different class. Of course it could be that our defeats in Senior and Junior C the night before cast a shadow over our performance and a sense of demoralisation pervaded the team. Whatever it was, and time will tell, we were well beaten in this game. Annaduff were stronger and if there was a weigh-in before the start the handicapper would be adding stones and not pounds to our tackle. We kept with Annaduff for twenty minutes and were level at three points each, but the gap opened gradually. The best indication of the difference was that Anthony Curran’s point in the twelfth minute was the only score we got from play and James McWeeney got the other four from frees. Annaduff scored 1-9 from play. It finished 1-13 to 0-5. Sin mar a bhí an scéal.

One must compliment team mentors Adrian Smith and Paddy Prior on looking after this team and there is still the Junior Shield to be played for in the League.

Foireann: Padraig McKeon, Joe McTague, Gavin Brennan, Freddie Walsh, Wayne McKeon, Shane Ferguson, Philip Murphy, Ronan Sharpley, Aidan Galligan, James McWeeney (0-4), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Shane Murphy, David Earley, Peter Dolan, Anthony Curran (0-1). Subs: Peter Reynolds, Diarmuid Keegan.

Junior C Championship Semi-Final

While our Seniors and Junior A team were both well beaten at the weekend, it was a different story with our second junior team and certainly the score-line dosn’t tell the full story at all. The score board says they lost by seven points, 4-8 to 0-13, but really they were the better team for most of this game and but for an outstanding final five minutes from Aughnasheelin they would have at least gained a draw. It was the best match of the ones we witnessed at the weekend. A most unusual setting: under lights in Cloone in the pouring rain but you could stand in your shirt in the stand in Cloone with the temperature high and the atmosphere good. Indeed it was unusual to see a bigger and more excited crowd for a Junior C game than was there for the Senior Championship double that preceded it. However, there has been a great rivalry between Ballinamore and Aughnasheelin at this level for the past couple of years and that has created great interest in their encounters.

The difference in this game was goals and Aughnasheelin got all of them. The first two were of the soft variety as befitted the wet evening. The first one came in the first half but we got over that with some outstanding scores from Anthony Curran, Peter Reynolds, Brian Breen, Shane Harte and Michael Costello. At half time we led by 0-9 to 1-5. Within minutes of the restart Aughnasheelin got another rather fortunate goal and we were behind again. However some outstanding points form Adrian Smith and Shane Harte brought us back level at 0-13 to 2-7 with five minutes remaining. It looked like finishing a draw or maybe we could squeeze a winner. Then Aughnasheelin struck oil. A point and then two goals within minutes agus b’sin é.

There were some outstanding performances in this game from Francis Dolan, Kevin Prior, Peter Reynolds, Adrian Smith and Anthony Curran in particular but really it was a most enjoyable game to watch and the best of luck to Aughnasheelin in the Final.

Well done to Tommy Dolan and Adrian Murphy who already won the Division 5 league and brought this team to a semi-final. Up to last year we could not field a team in the Junior C championship so this is real progress. The strength of playing numbers in the club was also evident at the weekend as over 50 players togged out between the three games. Long may it continue.

Foireann: Michael Dolan, Joseph Murphy, Francis Dolan, John Galligan, Kevin Prior, Freddie Walsh, Diarmuid Keegan, Peter Reynolds (0-1), Adrian Smith (0-3), Shane Harte (0-2), Anthony Curran (0-3), Michael Costello (0-1), Seán McCartin, Brian Breen (0-3), Daryl McFarland. Subs: Adrian Murphy and Conor Mahon

Juniors As in Championship Semi-Final

Our Junior As followed the example of the Junior Bs a week earlier by qualifying for the Semi-final with a decisive win over Aughavas on Saturday evening in Cloone. It was a bit easier than expected as we led by 0-8 to no score at half time. Aughavas did come into it a bit more in the second half but we were never really in trouble and won by 0-14 to 1-2 at the finish.

What was really impressive about this display was that thirteen of those fourteen points came from play and some of them were really outstanding. Peter Dolan’s point in the first half, a long run by Philip Murphy after half time finished for a point, a good catch followed by a good point from Gordon Hughes, a point from fifty yards out from James McWeeney and another great run and a point from fully fifty yards from Peter Dolan, all in the second half. Overall, James McWeeney was in great scoring form, as were Shane Murphy, Peter Dolan and Gordon Hughes. It was also significant to see halfbacks Shane Ferguson and Philip Murphy coming up to score points. Peter Reynolds had the ball in the net for a replica of his goal against Eslin, but this time he was deemed to be in the square. However, with two auctioneers in the full forward line we were onto a winner! Now it is on to meet Annaduff in the semi-final.

Foireann: Padraig McKeon, Francis Dolan, Gavin Brennan, Joe McTague, Wayne McKeon, Shane Ferguson (0-1), Philip Murphy (0-1), Peter Dolan (0-2), Ronan Sharpley, Shane Murphy (0-2), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, James McWeeney (0-5), Gordon Hughes (0-2), Aidan Galligan (0-1), Tommy McCormack. Subs: Kevin Prior, Peter Reynolds, David Earley, Michael Costello and Darren Reynolds

Third Team progress in Junior Championship

Our third adult team, playing in the Junior B Championship, won their quarter-final match against Eslin on Sunday. After our Seniors and Junior A team qualifying for their respective quarter-finals, it fell to our third team to be the first to reach a semi-final. It was indeed an achievement for Tommy Dolan, Adrian Smith and Michael Quinn to manage to field a full team and have a couple of subs and not a bad team at that. Eslin too deserve great credit for fielding a full team and a sign of the times was to see a Polish man in their ranks.

From early on we seemed to have the upperhand. Barney Breen got an early point and when Daryl McFarland hit the net twice within five minutes the writing was on the wall for Eslin. Daryl’s first goal was a brilliant one and Adrian Smith, Barney Breen and Shane Harte got further points to leave us leading by 2-4 to 0-1 at half time. If Daryl McFarland was the star of the first half, Sean McCartin was the star of the second half. He rattled the net within minutes of the restart and he got two other good points before the finish. In between Shane Harte got two points and, for a man who hasn’t played all year, he certainly made his mark. Eslin finished well when the game was well and truly lost, getting a goal and three points to leave it at the finish 3-8 to 1-4. This team now face Aughnasheelin in the semi-final and they certainly will give it a good rattle.

Foireann: Conor Harte, Joseph Murphy, Francis Dolan, John Galligan, Kevin Prior, Freddie Walsh, Diarmuid Keegan, Peter Reynolds, Jason Kellett, Daryl McFarland (2-0), Adrian Smith (0-1), Michael Costello, Tommy McCormack Brian Breen (0-2), Sean McCartin (1-2). Subs: Shane Harte (0-3), Adrian Murphy

Ballinamore Men win Californian Championship

In far-off California the Celts won the Californian state Championship on Sunday last. Two Ballinamore men were playing for the winning Celts team: Finnian Sharpley and David Duignan. The Celts now go on to play in the North American finals in Philadelphia on what is known as Labour week-end, the first weekend in September. David and Finnian’s team had to play seven games including the final, to win the Californian title. It is ironic indeed that since Finnian and David left Ireland on 5 June their colleagues on the Seán O’Heslin’s senior team have played just two competitive matches, while they have played seven.  David and Finnian had planned to return on 1 September but because of their teams involvement in Philadelphia on that week-end they are extending their stay by one week. Good luck to the lads and their team in the North American Finals. Once again great to see the extent of Sean O’Heslins participation in the universal movement that is now Gaelic games.

Premium Tickets for Hurling Final

As in previous years, club members can put their name in for a draw for the club’s two premium tickets for the hurling final. The person pulled out will pay the face value for the tickets. If you wish to have your name in the hat please contact Conor Harte by next Monday at the latest.

Leitrim Abú – Fir agus Mná

Best of luck to Leitrim on Sunday. Tá sé iontach maith go mbeidh Liatroim ag imirt i bPáirc an Chrócaigh arís. Indeed it could be a double year for Leitrim in Croke Park with the ladies on course for a Junior Final. Well done to them too and to Sarah McLoughlin who got a crucial goal.

Gary Flynn Tournament

Ballinamore won the annual Gary Flynn Tournament during the Festival. They drew with Lisnaskea, 2-4 each. Aughawillan beat Lisnaskea and then Ballinamore beat Aughawillan by 3-3 to 2-0 to win the competition. Medals were presented to the winning Ballinamore team.

Good Win for Juniors over Eslin

Our Junior A team booked their place in the quarter finals of the championship with a hard-earned win over Eslin in Cloone on Saturday. At half time, with Eslin leading by 0-7 to 0-4, it didn’t look like we could win it.  We had got points from Shane Murphy and Ronan Sharpley and pointed frees from Peter Dolan and James McWeeney but we were struggling just to keep in touch.

However, O’Heslins put up a great performance in the second half and the turning point came when we were still three points down and a high ball into the square was fumbled by two Eslin players. Peter Reynolds, who had come on as a sub, was on hand to pounce on the ball and finish to the net. This was really the score we needed and although Eslin kept getting points, as the game went on the more we looked like winning. Peter Dolan got one exceptional point to put us in the lead and at one stage James McWeeney pointed from a free to put us two ahead. However, Eslin got the last point which only shaved the crossbar.  It finished 1-9 to 0-11. This was a hard-won victory that puts us top of the group and it would not be any surprise if we meet Eslin again further on in the championship. It was a good team performance but Gavin Brennan had an exceptional game at full back, Ronan Sharpley made up for the absence through injury of Aidan Galligan at midfield. Peter Dolan kicked a few great points and James McWeeney was accurate from loon-range frees. In the finish it was Peter Reynolds’ goal which made the difference.

Foireann: Padraig McKeon, Kevin O’Connor, Gavin Brennan, Joe McTague, Freddie Walsh, Shane Ferguson, Wayne McKeon, Peter Dolan (0-3), Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-1), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, James McWeeney (0-4), Tommy McCormack, Anthony Curran, Gordon Hughes. Subs: Peter Reynolds (1-0), Diarmuid Keegan
