In a
very unique event our under 16 boys traveled to Dunamannagh in Tyrone on
Saturday last to the Clann na Gael club, the home club of Stephen O’Neill.
Stephen met the boys just outside Omagh and brought them to his home club. On
their arrival there were refreshments waiting for them. After this the lads were
presented with their medals and the “Sam” was on display. They also got a
group photo and individual photos with Stephen. They then played a challenge
game against Clann na Gael under 16s, playing some great football and winning
the game. They then had a coaching session. After this it was back to the Fir
Tree Hotel in Strabane for a well-deserved meal. The boys and their mentors
would like to thank Club Chairman, Conor Harte and Secretary, Paddy O’Connor
and the club Bord na nÓg chairman, Padraig Leyden and the parents for coming to
see the boys being presented with their medals. Bhí lá iontach maith ag gach
duine.
The club
had big participation in Scór na nÓg over two nights last weekend, some

Both sets qualified.
In Tráth
na gCeist we had two teams. For O’Heslins, Shane Murphy, Darren Reynolds and
Michael Costello. For Ballinamore, Kevin Banks, Cyril óg Smith and Stephen

them performing well: Aisling Duignan and Aisling Maxwell. On this occasion
Aisling Maxwell got through. In recitation Róisín McTague took part. Our
Ballad group of Katie Duignan, Ciara Martin, Shauna Cullen, Aisling Duignan and
Lauren McGrory also qualified. In music we had Maria O’Reilly, Rachel

Last time we heard from Brendan Wisley,
the Singapore GAA team were travelling to Shanghai, China, to play in the 10th
Annual Asia Games Tournament. That was last October. Well, the Singapore men's
team won the Plate beating Na Geanna - Japan Exiles with Brendan playing at full

In addition, Singapore has since been
confirmed as the venue for the Vodafone GAA All Stars tour next January. The All
Star hurlers of 2004 and 2005 will fly to Asia on Wednesday, January 18th and
will return a week later. The highlight of the visit will be an exhibition game
between the two selections to be played at the Singapore Polo Grounds on
Saturday, January 21st. The visit is being hosted by the local GAA club,
the Singapore Gaelic Lions, of which Brendan Wisley from Kiltymooden is the
current club secretary. With a multi-national membership, the Club enjoys an
excellent profile in Singapore and works closely with other local and Irish
Community groups.

The club
AGM took place on Sunday last. There were about 45 in attendance and with no
changes in officer positions and a fairly successful season just ended there
were no fireworks or heated discussions. The outgoing Cathaoirleach went through
the year’s activities both on and off the field. The opening of the newly laid
pitch was one of the highlights of the season; indeed it is the envy of many
clubs. On the pitch, the Seniors reached the quarter final of the championship
and nearly made it against Kiltubrid. Their big achievement was to retain senior
status. The under 16s did a magnificent double in League and championship. The
under 14 hurlers won championship and Féile. The ladies reached three finals
and, at the end of the season, Oughteragh Gaels won the under 21 championship.
In Scór it was a quiet year at adult level but in Scór na nÓg the figure
dancers reached the All Ireland Finals.
There
were great fundraising efforts throughout the year from the Finance Committee,
headed by Tommy Moran and the Lotto sellers organized by Mona Creamer. Major
fundraisers were the Park Development Fundraiser, the Christmas Draw, Golf
Classic. Race Night and sponsorship. Apart from the development work in progress
on the Park, it cost in the region of €70,000 to run the club during the year.

Great
Victory for Under 21s
Oughteragh
Gaels took the under 21 title in dramatic style on Saturday last. For much of
the game, especially the second half it looked like going beyond their reach,
but they battled away and stole it in the final three or four minutes.
In the
early stages Oughteragh Gaels were doing great. They led by 0-4 to 0-2 and were
sailing. Then, as often happens, Drumlea got a snap goal out of the blue and the
whole picture changed. At half time it was 1-4 to 0-4for Drumlea. In the early
part of the second half, Oughteragh Gaels had the upperhand again and came
within one point of Drumlea. Then Drumlea had a dominant spell but hit a lot of
wides. With ordinary time already up and Gaels still a point behind, a couple of
moments of magic from Anton Arandelovic changed it all. First he hit a great
point from the right to level it and then he won a throw in and held the ball
until he released it to Cathal Egan. Cathal hit a great point with very little
room to maneuver and that was it. It was a sweet victory and made up for a
dramatic defeat by Drumlea in the 2002 final when we seemed to have it won but
then lost in extra time.
This was
a hard earned victory but there were a couple of outstanding displays. Gavin
McWeeney kept Oughteragh Gaels in it almost single-handedly. He pointed every
free they got when Drumlea were missing from play and placed balls. The man of
the match was undoubtedly Liam Ferguson who came to the rescue on many occasions
in the second half especially. In the last minutes it was the brilliance of
Anton Arandelovic and Cathal Egan who sealed it. Final score Oughteragh Gaels
0-9 Drumlea 1-5. Well done to the team mentors Brian Breen and Brendan Sammon
who steered this team to victory.

Under
21s in Co Final
Oughteragh
Gaels qualified for the under 21 Final by beating Glencar/Manorhamilton on
Saturday last. On a sunny November evening on the excellent Drumshanbo pitch
this was a closely fought game and the Gaels just about deserved to win. Early
in the first half it looked as if the Ballinamore/Aughnasheelin combination were
going to run away with it. Points by Roan Sharpley and James McWeeney opened the
scoring before Manor got a goal. However, when Cathal Egan crashed to the net it
led to a take over by the Gaels. Three pointed frees from Gavin McWeeney left it
1-5 to 1-1. Then Manor took over and got the next five points without reply to
lead by 1-6 to 1-5 at half-time.
Manorhamilton
missed a good few chances early in the second half while they were on top. David
Duignan, Gavin and Barry McWeeney got points each. Then the Gaels took over with
an excellent point from Cathal Egan, followed by two more good ones from Gavin
Sammon. An opportunist goal from Gavin Sammon seemed to have been the final nail
as it gave Oughteragh Gaels a six-point lead. However Manor got the next three
points but that is where it ended, 2-11 to 1-11. Next weekend it is Drumlea in
the final and that should be interesting.

display. It promises to be a wonderful experience for those talented players who
brought double glory to the club this year. Clann na Gael is also the club of

Our
Minor Girls played St.Josephs in the county final in Fenagh on Sunday last. This
was a tough encounter for the girls who never really got going in the game.
Despite their never-say-die attitude, they left themselves with too much to do
in the second half, but fought bravely to the end. They can now look forward to
a well-deserved break for a while. The team & subs were: Carol O’Connor,
Roweena O’Rourke (capt), Clare Fanning, Kate McTague, Orla McWeeney, Deborah
Gillheaney, Lauren McGrory, Katie Duignan, Catherine Smith, Erin Gillheaney,

Seniors
Lose in Final Game of the Year.
Tá
Deireadh na bliana tagtha. Our final league game, which was effectively a battle
for promotion, took place in Aughawillan on Saturday. It was a tough close game
that resembled well the traditional Ballinamore-Aughawillan encounters of the
80s and 90s. with Aughawillan shading it on this occasion. We got a great boost
very early on. A lucky break in the square was finished to the net by Paul
Prior. However, if it was a lucky one it only compensated for a lot of missed
chances in the second half. We got two other points in the first half from Liam
Ferguson and Finnian Sharpley. At half time Aughawillan led by 0-8 to 1-2, which
was a fair indication of the run of play.
We
had the wind in the second half and a strong wind it was too. We dominated
possession for the entire second half but just could not get scores. Our two
second half points came from frees by Anton Arandelovic and Paul Prior but twice
as many frees were missed and although we got within one point at one stage,
Aughawillan got the final two to put it beyond our reach. Even in the last
minute Thomas McLoughlin made a great attempt at goal but it went narrowly wide.
It finished 0-10 to 1-4. There is no doubt about it we tried hard and it
wasn’t from want of effort that we failed.
However,
it could all be for luck. Next spring we will be in division two of the league
but in senior championship. It seems a long way off but it will come. It has
been a good year overall and our thanks to Séamus McKeon, Alan Banks and Paddy
Prior and all of the panel who put a great effort into it.

Ladies Football
Sean
O’Heslins under 12 girls took home their first ever title by winning the
shield final beating Augnasheelin. Our girls went out and gave an outstanding
display of football in what turned out to be a very wet and winding Saturday
morning in Augnasheelin, but they didn't seem to mind as they got off to a
flying start, with some great scores from our two forwards Megan O' Connor and
Dawn Flynn which was followed by some great score taking from our two
midfielders Ciara and Laura O' Dowd. We had great defending in the back line
from Niamh Donnelly and Ciara McTague, we also had some great saves from Louise
Farry in goals.
The
girls played their best football to-date and it was great to watch
the girls play with great team spirit. The second half turned out to be
very entertaining football from both sides with Augnasheelin getting more
into the game and getting some great scores. But our girls held on well
and were just that bit stronger. We then made some changes by putting our
sub's on in the last remaining minutes of the game. Our sub's were Niamh
Flynn, Aoibheann Flynn, Aoibheann Boyle, Aoibheann Curran and Phillippa
O'Reilly, they also played great football and had some great scores. We
also had some players missing on the day and they were Caroline Bourke,
Rachel Gilheaney and Laura Creaven. The game ended Augnasheelin 4:8 Sean
O’Heslins 10:12. The girls then headed back to town with their captain
Ciara O Dowd to celebrate their victory. The team panel on the day were
Louise Farry, Niamh Donnelly, Ciara McTague, Ciara O' Dowd (Capt) Laura O' Dowd,
Megan O' Connor, Dawn Flynn, Niamh Flynn, Aoibheann Flynn, Aoibheann Curran,
Aoibheann Boyle, Phillippa O'Reilly.
That
was the last game of the season for our under 12 girls and we hope to see you
all back next year for under 12 and under 14. Thanks to all the girls for
turning out to training through the season and to their parents for encouraging
them throughout
the season also. Thanks to all the parents for driving to some of the away

It is
part of the GAA Rules to support Irish industry but it is seldom we hear people
talking now about “Buy Irish”. It
has come to our notice recently that few people in Ballinamore seem to realize
that of all the varieties of toothpaste on the shelves, there is only one that
is Irish-made and that is the “Fiacla” brand. For that reason you would
expect that people would buy nothing else but Fiacla. However, it seems one
outlet in Ballinamore stopped stocking it because it wasn’t being sold. It is
back on the shelves now and we would urge everybody to but Irish in this case.
The price and quality is the same. So next time you are in the supermarket look
for Fiacla

Our
seniors kept up their quest for league promotion with a hard-earned win over
Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday last. In the first half we got points from
Anton Arandelovic, Seán Murray, two from Finnian Sharpley and the best score of
the half was a pointed free from the sideline by Paul Prior. It was level at
half-time, 0-5 to us and 1-2 to Manorhamilton. We played great football in the
second half that was matched all the way by the North Leitrim boys. Paul Prior
pointed two good frees and it was level with minutes to go at 0-7 to 1-4. Then
Naoise Hayden got a wonderful point from the end line, which gave us the lead.
In the last minute Anthony McTague managed to get it over the bar when he
didn’t seem to have much of a chance to give us a lead of two and that was the
way it ended, 0-9 to 1-4. A win we deserved on the run of play and one that
keeps us in the running for promotion.

On
Saturday last Sean O’Heslins played Glencar/Manorhamilton in the Junior B
League Final in Kiltubrid. Once again Manor proved too strong for the
O’Heslins girls. It was the first half performance by the Manorhamilton girls
that proved too much for Ballinamore, although the girls came out with a much
better second-half performance and never gave up until the final whistle. This
was the last junior game for the girls this year but they can look back with
pride on reaching the league and championship finals. We would like to thank
them for the effort they put in at training and on the field of play.

Seniors
play Manorhamilton in the Bee Park on Saturday, probably at 4.00
It
looked unusual on the scoreboard in Páirc Seán on Saturday and novel it surely
was, a team drawn from Ballinamore, Manorhamilton and the Gortletteragh/Mohill
and Bornacoola areas; called Gaeil
an Chontae, facing St Mary’s in the County Senior Hurling Final. It certainly
produced a much-improved county final but the result was the same, a seventh
victory on the trot for St Mary’s. Gaeil an Chontae had the better of the
opening few minutes but could only get one point. St Mary’s got on top and a
lucky goal gave them a flattering 1-6 to 0-2 lead at the interval.
Na Gaeil
had the better of much of the second half. Points from the two marksmen: Gary
Hickey and Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin and then a great goal from Phily McGuinness
brought Na Gaeil within three points. Then a strange thing happened. Dominic
Kelly got what appeared to be a point from the right wing. The umpire on that
wing waved it wide. Players protested and the umpire on the right signaled a
point. Then he consulted the first umpire and they seemed to agree it was over.
However the referee never went in to consult but instead booked a Gaeil player
for protesting. Almost from the puck out St Mary’s got a goal from a goalmouth
scramble and that was the end of it. The experiment worked in that it gave a
very competitive county final. The result shows St Mary’s great superiority at
the moment and the reason why we will probably see more of Gaeil an Chontae, for
another year at least. It finished St Mary’s 2-10, Gaeil an Chontae 1-8.

Pat Mallon
One of
the town’s best-loved characters, Pat Mallon, was buried last Friday. Pat, who
came from Dublin sixty-six years ago to work and live in D’Arcy's, High St,
was known by all and sundry in Ballinamore and surrounds. Pat was passionately
interested in football, in the fortunes of his native Dublin, Sean O’Heslins
and Leitrim. In the early 1940s when the Ballinamore club was suspended, a
parish league kept activity going and Pat played for the town team. In later
years Pat Mallon was a Vice President of the club and club members participated
in the guard of honour at his removal. Pat was a deeply religious man and great
tributes were paid to him at his funeral mass by Fr Heery and by Gay D’Arcy.

Our
seniors had an easy win over Drumkeerin on Sunday. We had the game sewn up by
half-time and nothing went right for Drumkeerin in the second half. However it
has to be said this was a devastating performance by O’Heslins. Hurt by the
defeat by Mohill the previous week, there was going to be no slippage this time.
There were some very well-worked scores, particularly significant early on when
the eventual outcome was still wide open. Leading by 1-9 to 0-3 at half-time, it
ended 6-14 to 0-6.

Friday
was a famous evening for the club when the under 16 footballers took the under
16 championship title for the second year in a row and also completed the League
and Championship double for 2005. It was one-way traffic for most of the first
half with Wayne McKeon and Shane Murphy in great scoring form. Wayne got five
points, Shane got three and Jim McTague got one. At half time we led by 0-9 to
0-1. Carrigallen were coming more into the game before half time and the second
half had a surprise in store for us. Carrigallen got four points in succession
and it was down to just four between us. At this stage Philip Farrelly brought
off a great save and Carrigallen ran out of steam after that. Jim McTague got a
point to start us off and then the “Wayne and Shane Show” started again. The
points flowed, Wayne got three, Shane got two, Jim McTague got his second of the
half and Shane Moran also got his name on the score sheet. Although Carrigallen
got a late goal it was all long over by then and it finished 0-17 to 1-5.
In
reality, O’Heslins won this championship when they beat St Mary’s a week
earlier. Carrigallen tried their best but were no match for what is a wonderful
team of footballers, the best this club has seen at this level for quarter of a
century, yes since 1980. True, they won the championship last year, but there
was an element of luck on that occasion. There was no need for luck this year,
they are the best team in the county and they have some of the best footballers
the club has seen in a long while. Congratulations to the whole panel and to
Managers: Padraig McKeon, Sean Reynolds and Ronan O’Rourke. The trophy was

Our
senior footballers lost their first outing in the second tier of the league on
Sunday. It was a close game all through and it was only in the last five minutes
that Mohill pulled away. An early goal from Rory O’Rourke and
points from Seán Murray and Anton Arandelovic meant we were up four
points at one stage. However, Mohill got a goal and two points without reply
from us and they led by 1-3 t 1-2 at half-time. We were unlucky in that three
shots hit the upright in the first half and were cleared. In a low scoring
second half we missed a good few chances and relied entirely on Finnian Sharpley
who scored our three second half points. Mohill got five and won by 1-8 to 1-5.

Our
hurlers lost the B Final to Manorhamilton
on Saturday. We were a bit under strength and never really got going. In the
first half we held our own and an Adrian Gallogly goal brought us back into the
game. At half time Manorhamilton led by 1-6 to 1-2. We were back to within three
points of Manorhamilton but when they got another goal we were unable to get
back into it. It finished 3-8 to 1-5.

The
senior Championship final is on Saturday next and this time it is an
amalgamation of Ballinamore, Manorhamilton and players from the Gortletteragh
area against St Mary’s. This combination will be known as Gaeil an Chontae.
After suffering bad defeats to St Mary’s over the past few years it was agreed
that instead of the B winners taking on St Mary’s, it would be a combined
team. This should certainly ensure a competitive Co Final.
Under
14 Hurlers win Co Championship.
Our
under 14 hurlers won the championship for the first time since 1999 when they
comprehensively beat Mohill on Tuesday last. From the word go we were totally in
control and by half-time were leading by 2-4 to 0-0. We dominated similarly in
the second half and ran out easy winners. In the first half goals from Éamon
Walsh and Dean Creaven and points from Morgan Quinn and Paddy McManus put us
ahead. The second half started with a Dean Creaven goal. Morgan Quinn got a
couple more points. Joe McGirl, Shane Moran and Sean McWeeney got goals and
there were points also from Shane McWeeney and Keith Boyle. This is undoubtedly
the best under 14 team we have had for a long time with a lot of fine hurlers.
Morgan Quinn and Sean McWeeney, in particular, are two of the most skilled under
14s we have seen in a while. The trophy was presented to the Captain, Morgan
Quinn, by Mickie Dorrigan after the match.

Ballinamore
Boys NS won the INTO mini sevens when they beat Leitrim NS by 2-4 to 1-5 on
Friday last. This was a very hard-fought game with the goalkeeper, Kevin Banks
and the two defenders Cyril Smith and Jack Cullen being outstanding. Stephen

injury. David O’Connell and David McLoughlin were also in great form. This was

Forty
years ago a Ballinamore man played in the Mayo County Final. This year’s Mayo

Our
under 16s are still on course for the double, having qualified for the Co Final.
On Friday last the beat St Mary’s in a thriller by 1-10 to 1-5. This was the
crucial game of the championship, and it was no easy game with St Mary’s keen
to avenge their league Final defeat. St Mary’s had already lost to Carrigallen
so we needed a draw at least to ensure a final place. St Mary’s led at
half-time by 1-3 to 0-5 but we had missed a number of good chances and at least
two goal chances. However, it certainly put it up to our lads to be down by a
point and facing into the wind. Wayne McKeon had got three of our first half
points, the last one being exceptional, from forty yards out on the sideline.
John Christie and Shane Murphy got the other points. Our second half performance
was excellent. Shane Murphy got three great points, Wayne McKeon pointed a free,
but the score that really clinched it was a brilliant goal from Wayne McKeon
with only five minutes left. John Christie got another point to leave it
comfortable. There were some outstanding displays from David Leyden, Matthew
Murphy and Michael Costello in defence, Wayne McKeon and Jim McTague in midfield
and Shane Murphy in attack.

they just got the better of Manorhamilton. Manorhamilton dominated until Sean
McWeeney moved to full back and then in a ten-minute spell at the end of the

Ballinamore
Footballer Plays for Jamaica.
On
Saturday last Kingston Gaels from Jamaica played Cayman Gaels from the Cayman
Islands in what you probably could call the Caribbean County Final. Last week
Des Cahill talked on RTE radio to Ballinamore’s Dermot Cribben about this
game. Dermot, who played underage football with Sean O’Heslins, was playing
with Kingston Gaels on Saturday. The game was played in the Cayman Rugby Club
grounds and drew an attendance of 150 people. The game ended in a draw and the
replay will be in Kingston, Jamaica.
The team
trains every Tuesday and line out in the Jamaican colours, black, green and
gold. They had of course to fly to the Cayman Islands, which is a 45-minute
flight away. Just imagine having to travel to London to your nearest club game.
That is what it is all about. Another Leitrim man lining out for Kingston Gaels
was Padraig McBride from Manorhamilton.
It is
indeed a delight to hear of Gaelic football being played in these far away
places. Great also to see Leitrim men bringing this great game with them and not
forgetting their Irishness. Comhghairdeas libh.
Truth is
sometimes stranger than fiction, and this is truly an international Gaelic
weekend with Ballinamore connections. While Dermot Cribben from Main St
Ballinamore was playing Gaelic Football for Kingston Gaels in Jamaica, Brendan
Wisley from Kiltymooden, Ballinamore was playing for Singapore in the Asian
Gaelic Games in Shanghai in China. The tenth Asian Gaelic Games Sevens
Tournament took place last weekend in Shanghai. About 34 team, men’s and
ladies, and 400 players took part, with teams from Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo and
many other places. The parade at the finals on Sunday were led by a band form
the People’s Liberation Army, who played the Irish and Chinese National
Anthems.
There were in fact two Ballinamore connections at the games last weekend.
Gareth O'Brien, from Cavan, a nephew of Mae McDevitt, High Street and Brendan
Wisley Jnr, of Kiltymooden, the current secretary of the Singapore Gaelic Club,
a post incidentally he took over for Gareth, participated in the Games, in
Shanghai. Brendan Wisley Church Supplies is an official sponsor of the
Singapore Lions Club.
Brendan tells me that for the hurling final over 50 turned up at one of the club members house in the wee hours of Monday Morning to watch the game on a computer screen with the sound of RTE, radio again via the net in the background. Brendan informs me that, he has had many a good crowd, listen to the radio, and watch the games, in his own house, via broadband during the summer.
For the people who coached many a
schools and underage team in Ballinamore it is a thrill to hear of Ballinamore
men being involved in developing Gaelic games across the globe. Well done to
Dermot and Brendan, Ballinamore men in two distant lands.
Those
lucky winners of the premium tickets were: Brendan Burns for the Football Final
and Marie O’Connor for the Hurling Final.

Senior
Hurling is around the corner, with a game likely on the weekend after next.
There is a new development in senior hurling this year. Sean O’Heslins will
play Manorhamilton in the senior B competition first, as in the past couple of
seasons. The situation with the Senior Championship proper is that St Mary’s
will play an amalgamation of the other two clubs plus whatever players are
available from the former Gortletteragh area. This is welcome news as our
experience of the past couple of years was that a big gap had emerged between St
Mary’s and the others. It should lead to a competitive final.
Our
intermediates lost heavily to St Mary’s in the second of our relegation games.
This means our second team will be in Junior A Championship next year. In
fairness it is probably our level as next year’s Intermediate grade will
include seven teams relegated from senior this year, plus Aughnasheelin,
Dromahair and three very strong second-string teams from St Mary’s, Allen
Gaels and Glencar/Manorhamilton. It would be “in aghaidh na gaoithe” all the
time in that company.
Although
well beaten on Sunday by St Mary’s we started very well and missed three goal
chances before St Mary’s settled down. It was a false dawn as the stronger
team pulled away by half time.

The Sean

Sean
O’Heslins junior girls were invited to the Connacht 7s in Barna last weekend.
The girls played two games against Miltown from Galway and Geevagh from Sligo.
Both teams proved two strong for the girls but nevertheless they tried their
best. Miltown went on to win the cup and Geevagh the Shield. All teams went to a
banquet in the Clybaun Hotel on Saturday night and a disco was arranged for them
after that. The girls had an enjoyable weekend and would like to thank all who
came down to support them and especially the Seán O’Heslins club who gave
them the opportunity to go.
Now that
ladies football is winding down I would like to thank Emma Reynolds who has been

buíochas also to team manager Seán Reynolds for his input also.
The
under 16 boys played their second game of the championship against Melvin Gaels
in Kinlough on Friday last. On what was a fine evening for playing football, our

Congratulation
to Kiltubrid on their first ever senior title and they have now become the
eighteenth club in Leitrim to have won a senior title. Yes, 18 out of
Leitrim’s 24 clubs have won a senior championship and bear in mind that two of
those twenty-four are very new clubs. Gorvagh of course also won the senior
championship but they are no longer in existence. Of course Gorvagh hold a
record of their own having won four-in-a-row. Kiltubrid were the only club in
south Leitrim, apart from Leitrim Gaels, who had not won a senior title up to
now. One other remarkable thing is that no less than thirteen different clubs
have contested the Leitrim senior Football Final over the last thirteen years.
That is a welcome change from the 1980s when three clubs nearly dominated the

We
played Aughnasheelin on Saturday in the first of two play-off games to decide on
who is relegated to Junior next year. We lost by 3-11 to 2-7 but it wasn’t a
bad performance seeing as the same Aughnasheelin team drew with our seniors a
few weeks ago. Aughnasheelin got goals at crucial stages and were considerably
the better team throughout. In the first half pointed frees from Paul Prior,
points from Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin and James McWeeney and a goal before
half-time from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin left it Aughnasheelin 2-8 to our 1-4 at
the break. The second half was even score-wise with our scores coming from Alan
prior with two points, a goal from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin and a pointed free
from Paul Prior. However we were not able to make inroads into the first half
deficit.

On
Saturday last Sean O’Heslins junior ladies played Glencar/Manor in the junior
B Final in Drumkeerin on a lovely evening for playing football. Unfortunately
the Glencar/Manor girls proved too strong for Ballinamore. The Manor girls got
off to a flying start and were well ahead by half-time. The Sean O’Heslins
girls, to their credit, never gave up and kept battling right to the end. This
is a very young team and their day will surely come. It was a big achievement to
reach the final for a club that only started out in 2003. The girls would like
to thank all who came out to support them on the day; it was great to see such a
good crowd. The best of luck also to Manorhamilton in junior A next year.

The

Ballinamore pushing home their advantage. Team and scorers. Philip Farrelly,

Scór
We wont
find until Scór is upon us and the club is hoping to enter Scór with renewed
vigour this year. Seán O’Heslins is known throughout the country for their Scór
efforts and it is vital that the club is organized to maintain the club’s
position at county and national level in terms of participation especially and
success if that comes. The club is hoping to get a group of people together with
an interest in Scór as for some years the burden of effort has fallen on one
person, the Scór coordinator. Anyone willing to help is asked to contact Seán
O Suilleabháin.
The club
wishes to express its sympathy to the Prior Family High St on the death of Mrs.
Rita Prior. Also to the McKeon family on the death of Mrs. Maureen McKeon and
the McGirl Family on the death of Hugh Walsh. The legendary Seán Purcell who
died recently was a frequent visitor to Ballinamore as his son is married to Síle
Feeney, Aghadark. Sympathy to his family also. Go ndéana Dia trócaire orthu
uile.
The
pairing for the Co Final certainly adds to our sense of achievement this year as
we drew with both of them in the course of the championship. It certainly is a
unique final with Kiltubrid going for their first ever senior title. The one and
only time Kiltubrid contested a senior final was in 1935 and they lost to
Ballinamore. That was one of the finals with no details whatever recorded in the
local papers. We do not know the teams, the venue nor even the score. Bornacoola
have won four titles and their last was in 1957. Good luck to them both.

Scealta na Seachtaine - 29 Lunasa 2005
Our
senior championship run came to an end in Cloone on Sunday when Kiltubrid ran
out winners by 2-11 to 1-3. This was a performance out of line with all of the
thirteen games we played in League and Championship so far this year. For
whatever reason the team did not do themselves justice and certainly the drawn
game a week earlier would go to prove that. It is probably worth reminding this
young team of ours that a highly rated Ballinamore senior team played
Gortletteragh in the Senior Championship Final in 1985 and it ended in a draw. A
week later the replay took place in Cloone and Gortletteragh beat us off the
field by 1-13 to 0-4. We were mortified. A year later the same Ballinamore team
won the Senior Championship. There are maverick displays from even the best of
teams that cannot be accounted for, and Saturday’s was one of them.
Overall,
one big achievement has been to retain senior status for 2006 and there will be
a good few clubs envying us next summer. There is still a league to be finished
and that must be worked on now. The best of luck to Kiltubrid for the rest of
the Championship, they deserved their win and it would be great to see a new
name inscribed on the Fenagh Cup. Given their performance last Saturday that is
well within their grasp. Team and scorers on Sunday were: Aidan Harte, Liam
Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke,
Johnny McWeeney (0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic, Paul McLoughlin
(1-0), Ciaran Murray, Anthony McTague, Ronan Sharpley, Paul Prior, Finnian
Sharpley (0-2).
The
juniors played Drumreilly on Sunday morning and were beaten by 0-11 to 0-8. It
was looking good at half time when we led by 0-6 to 0-5 and were playing the
better football. Points came from Adrian Murphy, Paul Prior, Aidan Galligan,
Sean McCartin, and two from Peter Dolan. However we never got going in the
second half and apart from two good points from Shane Harte, the cupboard was
bare. On the otherhand Drumreilly got six points and although we kept up the
pressure we just could not get the scores. Still it was great to see a good
panel of players out, and we were unavoidably short a couple from the last day
but these were replaced by a few willing and able replacements. Good wishes to
Mickey Quinn who got injured during the game. Final score 0-11 to 0-8 for
Drumreilly.

Upcoming
Championship games are as follows: Sept 5 at home to Glencar/Manorhamilton, Sept
16 away to Melvin Gaels, Sept 23 at home to St Mary’s and Sept 26 away to
Carrigallen.
The game
against Manorhamilton will probably be on Tuesday of next week
We
understand Mark McGrory was playing with the mini-sevens in Croke Park on
Sunday. It is a wonderful occasion for a young lad to play in the great stadium.
Imagine being able to say you played in Croke Park on the same day as the
legendary Colin Cooper. In fifty years time that will be a story worth telling
in Ballinamore. I’m sure young Mark enjoyed the occasion and it is something
he thoroughly deserved, as he is one of the finest young footballers around.
Pota Óir is now at €8,500. Next Monday’s draw is in Gay Priors. Winners of €40 last Monday were: Séamus MacGabhann, Kay Maguire, Susanne Healy, Maureen McGovern, Tonlagee, Christy Creamer, Kiltyhugh, and Fr Micheál Kelly. Numbers drawn: 50674132

The
senior replay is on Saturday in Cloone at 6.15. Our juniors play Drumreilly in
Aughawillan on Sunday morning at 12.00
Our
seniors gave one of their best performances in a long time in drawing with
Kiltubrid on Saturday. It was a game we could have won and could have lost but a
draw was probably the fairest outcome. Ballinamore struggled in the first half
but were still only 0-7 to 0-4 down at half-time. When Kiltubrid got their goal
to put them five points up, there was a risk they might pull away, but that was
when our lads started to play. We dominated from that to the end and while our
goal, the way it came, must have been enough to sent some Kiltubrid folk to an
early grave, it was no more than we deserved on the run of play. Overall it was
one of the most exciting games of the championship, well-contested by both teams
and well refereed by Éamon O’Grady.

Sean
O’Heslins junior ladies qualified for the Junior B Championship final when
they defeated Gortletteragh last Sunday morning in Aughavas. Conditions were bad
with heavy rain and a strong breeze. The Ballinamore girls had to dig deep to
overcome their opponents by a single point with Catherine Smith the hero scoring
the winning goal deep into injury time. This was a great win for the club, which
is only two years running. Final score was 5-5 to 5-4.

Intermediates
Lose in Quarter – Final
Our
Intermediates put up a good battle for the first half at least but just
weren’t good enough for a fitter faster Glencar/Manorhamilton team on Sunday.
We were the outsiders going into this game but, surprisingly, we led at
half-time by 2-3 to 0-8. Two good goals by Adrian Gallogly were the means of us
going in ahead at half-time. Our three points all came from frees by Paul Prior.
It would have needed a super effort in the second half to stay with
Manorhamilton. They scored 1-8 to our four points, two from Peter Dolan and one
each from Peter Reynolds and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin. Overall it wasn’t a bad
effort and it finished Glencar/Manor 1-16 Seán O’Heslins 2-7.

Juniors
Draw with Bornacoola.
It was
our first time to field a junior team in the championship in a few years and an
entertaining game it turned out to be. At half-time we led by 1-7 to 1-5 with
Alan Prior getting a goal and two points, Paul Prior got three points and Shane
Harte and Brian Breen one each. We had the better of the second half but just
could not get clear of Bornacoola. Scores were not plentiful, between bad misses
and good saves from the Bornacoola goalkeeper. Paul Prior got two points and
Sean McCartin one point and that was all we could muster. With time almost up we
were hanging on to a three point lead but Bornacoola goaled from a penalty to
level the game. It ended Bornacoola 2-7 to O’Heslins 1-10. Good to see some
players taking the field for the first time this year or indeed longer. Anthony
Curran played a fine game despite it being his first outing in some years.
Barney Breen filled a gap too. Well done to all and it isn’t over yet as the
competition is on a league basis.
Foireann:
