There
was a strong Ballinamore representation at the Scór na nÓg preliminary rounds
in Ballinamore last Friday night. We had representation in all events except
ballad group and had double entries in figure dance, set dance and solo singing.
Sean

Aisling Maxwell sang “The Bantry Girls Lament” and qualified for the finals.
Evan Moran King recited “Seainín” in the Aithriseoireacht. The question
time team was made up of Shane Murphy, Michael Costello and Darren Reynolds.
They were unlucky to be just two marks short of the qualifying mark for the
finals. In novelty act the actors were: Ross Dooner, Michelle Fanning and Rowena

administrative end of things and not leave it all for after the Christmas.
Great to
see Paddy Dolan, one of the all time greats of Ballinamore football, being
honoured with the Hall of Fame award by the Co Board. Paddy is one of the three
players from the club that figured on the Leitrim Team of the Millennium and he

Scealta na Seachtaine - 5 Nollaig 2004
About 60 people attended the AGM on Sunday and the big news of the day was the election of a new Cathaoirleach, Conor Harte. Andy Duffy, who had been in the chair for the past three years stepped down and Conor Harte was unanimously elected to the post. Other officers elected were: Uachtarán: Hugh McTague Snr. Leas-Uachtaráin: John Harte, Paddy Smith, Pat Joe Dolan, An tAthair Ó Dubhthaigh, Pat Mallon, George Price, Joe Gormley, Andy Duffy, Paddy Dolan. Leas-Cathaoirleach: Raymond McHugh, Rúnaí: Paddy O’Connor, Cisteoir, Anne Shanley, Registrar, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin. Coiste: Paddy Prior, Brian Breen, Alan Banks, Gary Smyth, Sean Ó Suilleabháin, Anton Arandelovic, Ronan O’Rourke. One member from ladies footballers to be co-opted as well as players’ representative.
Outgoing
Cathaoirleach, Andy Duffy outlined the highlights of the year. The purchase of
ground for the second pitch was a milestone in the club’s progress. He thanked
Francis and Ann McTague for their co-operation with the club in making the land
available. He said planning permission for the entire development was also
obtained. He praised the Park Committee for their work and also the Finance
Committee under Tommy Moran. He complimented the under 16s and their mentors on
winning the under 16 championship for the first time since 1980 as well as the
ladies winning team and the team which won the INTO mini sevens. He also paid
tribute to Ollie Honeyman for his efforts with the senior footballers for the
past three years. The efforts of all of the fundraising people, Mona Creamer and
her teams with the Lotto, Joe Gormley with the Golf Classic and many others.
Anne
Shanley gave a detailed account of the club’s finances. Income for the year
was €159,704 with expenditure at €194,277. Park development took up a
considerable portion of this. Club President,
Hugh
McTague who was Treasurer in 1961, brought in a balance sheet from the 1961 AGM
which showed Income at ₤162 and expenditure at ₤139. The biggest
item of expenditure was ₤50 for cars to bring players from Dublin and the
big income came from a Bazaar which yielded ₤113. Those were the days.
Tributes
were paid to two men synonymous with the Sean O’Heslins club who retire from
their positions this year. Andy Duffy has been Club Rúnaí for 13 years and
Club Cathaoirleach for the past three years. Andy is one of an elite band of
just five people who have served as Chairman and Secretary of the club at
different times. The other four are: Sean O’Heslin, Brendan Kieran, Christy
Gallogly and Brendan Burns. Andy has a passionate interest in football, and not
just Mayo football. He has devoted endless time to many facets of club activity
and will no doubt in the future. Bhí a chroí ann i gcónaí.
Likewise
Ollie Honeyman has played a central part in the club at senior level since 1979.
Ollie came onto the senior scene at club level with Senior championship success
in 1979 and was a central player at club and county level for two decades. Ollie
also put an immense amount of work into the senior team for the past three
years, with success last year in the B championship.
Conor
Harte takes over as Cathaoirleach at a time of great change for the club. A huge
development in facilities is in progress which will take a few years to
complete. There is great enthusiasm in the club for this project at the moment
and a great number of willing hands are helping out. On the playing fields
things were often better but then we were often spoiled with success. Good days
will come again. Conor Harte occupies a unique position within the club as his
father, John, was Cathaoirleach in 1994-1995. This is the first time a father
and son has occupied this position in the club. I suppose the fact that John was
Chairman just ten years ago would indicate that he was a late starter.
A
meeting will be held this Thursday at 9.00 in the Commercial Hotel to make
arrangements for the presentation of the under 16 championship and Ladies
9-a-side medals. Parents, Club Bord na nÓg officers and players are asked to
attend this meeting. The actual presentations will take place on Saturday 18 Dec
at 6.30 in the Community Centre. Dessie Dolan from Westmeath will make the
presentations to the boys and the ladies medals will be presented by the Uachtarán
of Cumann Peil na mBan. One of the Galway ladies team that won the senior All
Ireland will also be in attendance.
Congratulations
to Kevin McIntyre and Liz King who got married last weekend.
Membership
fees are now due and should be paid to Registrar, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin.
Every club player and mentor must have paid a membership fee as otherwise they
are not insured.
Tickets
are now in circulation for the club’s big Christmas draw which will take place
on Monday 3 Jan. Every penny is now urgently need for club development so we ask
all those with tickets to get selling them without delay.

is now at €4,800. Monday’s draw is in the Poor Scholar. Winners of €40
last Monday were: Brendan Burns, Christine Murray, Killaneen, Amy Hanley,
Willowfield, Sean Cooke, Cloone, John Galligan, Noel Sweeney. Winner of Bottle

70635241.

The club
AGM will be held on Sunday 5 Dec in the Community Centre. The Secretary’s
Annual Report is now being circulated to all paid up club members. The report
contains a very detailed account of all the year’s activity, both on and off
the field.
Nomination
forms have also been circulated to all club members. It is important that these
be returned to Paddy O’Connor before Friday 3 Dec.
Ollie
Honeyman is stepping down as Senior Team manager after over three years in
charge. During that time Ollie has spent a huge amount of time in preparing and
training the senior team along with his selectors Patrick McKiernan and Sean
Creamer. After the glorious era that spanned from the early 1960s to the early
1990s the task as manager wasn’t an easy one. Expectations were high having
been built on years of success. However the end of the road had been reached for
many of the great players by the end of the 1990s and Ollie set out to build a
new young team. The high point reached was victory in the Senior B Championship
in 2003. There were also many narrow defeats along the way. Ollie was totally
committed to the job in hand as indeed he was as a player since his first senior
championship success in 1979. On behalf of the club we would like to thank Ollie
for the countless hours spent in pursuit of building a new Sean O’Heslin’s
senior team and we wish his successor, whoever that may be, the very best in the
coming year.
Meeting
of the club executive on tomorrow Thursday at 8.30 in the Community Centre.

1947 to 1949 and served at county level during the 40’s and 50’s He was also

Our junior ladies played their final match of the year against Glencar Manorhamilton in the Shield semi-final last Saturday evening. They were unlucky not to win after putting up a great performance. The mentors would like to thank all the girls who participated in all grades, U-12, U-14, U-16, Minor & Junior levels. We hope to see them all continuing their good work in the new year. Special thanks to, Aughnasheelin GAA for the use of their pitch, to Michael Flynn, Sean McWeeney, Damien Gilheaney and Nora Earley for their help throughout the year. na Seachtaine - 1 Samhain 2004
Our
final league game of 2004 was against Drumkeerin in Drumkeerin on Saturday last.
It was a much better performance than we saw on the two previous outings, with
only a point separating the teams at the finish. At half-time we led by 0-4 to
0-3 and probably should have been more ahead. Paul Prior got three of these
points, one from a free, and Rory O’Rourke got the other one. Drumkeerin
dominated the second half, with the ball seldom passing midfield. Despite points
from Brian Cafferty, Paul Prior and a free from Paul Kieran, Drumkeerin were
three points ahead with five minutes remaining. Then a great move ended in a
David Duignan goal to level the match. However, Drumkeerin came back for a last
minute winner and won by 0-11 to 1-7. Team: Kevin O’Connor, Ruairí Ó
Suilleabháin, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, Anthony McTague, Ciaran
Murray, Liam Ferguson, Thomas McLoughlin, Rory O’Rourke (0-1), David Duignan
(1-0), Ronan Sharpley, Sean Murray, James McWeeney, Paul Kieran (0-1), Paul
Prior (0-4). Subs: Brian Cafferty (0-1) and Joe Honeyman.
The
replay of the Senior Hurling B Final against Manorhamilton will probably be on
this coming weekend.
It is
hoped to play St Mary’s soon in the Minor hurling Championship. It might have
been played last weekend only for the pitch situation. Looking back two years
ago we were unlucky to lose the Under 16 final to Mohill. Hopefully, with all
the same players available, we should give it a good run. The team two years ago
was: Liam Ferguson, Alan McCaffrey, Denis Dolan, Joe McGirl, Fergal McManus,
Fionnán Gilheaney, Tony Meehan, Kevin O’Connor, David McGovern, Paul
Gilheaney, Cathal Egan, Shane Murphy, Damien Gilheaney, Hugh Gough, David
Earley. Subs Darren McGrory, Barry McGovern.

GAA in
Singapore
Last
week we wrote about the GAA in Spain and Ballinamore connections. This week we
have GAA news from even farther afield, and a Ballinamore connection. In October
the 9th Asian Gaelic Football sevens
were held in Hong Kong with teams from Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Taipei, Shenzhen (Taiwan), Dubai, Seoul (Korea), and Beijing, Shanghai, (China) taking part. Brendan Wisley
Jnr from Kiltymooden is now working in Singapore and was involved with and
played with the Singapore Lions team in the games. They beat Japan C and Taiwan
and lost to Hong Kong A. They still qualified for the quarter final and beat
Hong Kong Aussie Rules but lost the semi-final to Hong Kong B. A total of 36
teams from six Asian countries took part, between men’s and women’s teams.
Nach iontach go deo é, an pheil ghaelach in áiteanna mar sin.
It
is wonderful to see former club members involved in promoting Gaelic games in
places so far afield as Spain and Singapore. Interesting to see too that one of
the sponsors of the Singapore team listed on the programme for the games was
Wisley Ecclesiastical Supplies. Our thanks to Brendan Wisley snr for providing a
copy of the programme. Back in the early 1940s, when the Ballinamore club was
suspended, there used to be a parish league in Ballinamore with teams from
Ardrum, Clenaghoo, The Town and The Railway. Now we read that there was an All
China Gaelic Football Championship in 2004, for both men and women, with teams
from Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. In fact it took the Beijing team 14 hours
by train to reach Shanghai. And people used to think the Narrow Gauge from
Ballinamore to Drumshanbo was slow !
Lately
the Cannaboe Syndicate won a sizeable prize in the Clane, Co Kildare GAA club
park development draw. Sean Deane was the connection in Kildare and John Harte
in Ballinamore. Another winner we noticed was “The Draw Committee” at
Longford Greyhound Track. Owned by John and Clare Ryan he came away with a
substantial prize and we wish him even bigger things in the future.

Espana
– News from Spain – Carl Sharpley – Player of the Tournament
The following message came from Conor Smith on e-mail from Spain this week:
Hello,
Just to inform you we had our annual gaelic football tournament this
weekend. We had teams from Dublin,Galway,Kildare,Meath and Spain. That includes
both men and women teams, nearly 200 players and officials.
The celebrity guests were Ogie Moran, Bomber Liston, Nicolas English and
Niall Quinn. The games were played over two days with the eventual winners
coming from Galway. The player of the tournament was picked by the celebrities
and that player was Carl Sharpley from Stradermot, son of Sean and Monica
Sharpley. Which was an excellent achievement considering the teams on display.
We hope to see Sean O Heslin’s in the tournament soon.
Aughnasheelin’s
new pitch is a delight to visit, great dry surface despite the rain, good
spectator accommodation and everything we hope our own will be next year.
However, for the second Sunday in two weeks it was the graveyard of our hopes as
we overwhelmed by Glencar/Manorhamilton, in much the same fashion as
Aughnasheelin did two weeks earlier. True, we were missing a few key players,
but when you consider that Glencar/Manor were every lucky to beat us by a few
points only a few weeks ago in the B championship, then things are not going
well at the moment. At half-time, Glencar/Manor led by 1-7 to 0-2, with points
coming from Joe Honeyman and a great “45” from Seán Murray. The second half
was scarcely better as our only score was a point from Anthony McTague and
Glencar/Manor got five more to finish 1-12 to 0-3 winners. Team: Kevin
O’Connor, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Rory O’Rourke, Shane Ferguson, Paul
McLoughlin, John McWeeney, Anthony McTague (0-1), Anton Arandelovic, Ronan
Sharpley, Liam Ferguson, Joe Honeyman (0-1), Brian Cafferty, Sean Murray (0-1),
Ciaran Murray, James McWeeney. Sub; Finnian Sharpley. Níl ach cluiche amháin fágtha
anois, i gcoinne Droim Caorthainn.
The
senior hurling B final between Glencar/Manor and ourselves on Sunday evening in
the Bee Park ended in a draw. Conditions were awful bad for hurling and by the
end the pitch was hardly playable. This was quite a well-contested game and we
were lucky to get a draw in the end. At half time it was 0-5 all and we had
points from Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (three) and Adrian Gallogly and Adrian
Smith, We struggled in the second half, especially after Manorhamilton got their
goal but still we never gave up trying. Points from Trevor Martin, who had an
exceptionally good game, Adrian Gallogly and Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin kept us in
the game but with five minutes to go we were a goal down. Then a long shot from
Thomas McLoughlin was deflected into the net for the equalizer and there were no
further scores to the end. Final
score 1-10 each. Thus we just survived agus beidh lá againn.
Those
that have phones please use them!
One of
the disappointing features of the game was that we had just twelve players
including two who hadn’t played before this year. We were glad to have them on
Sunday and fortunately there is a standing agreement in hurling in Leitrim that
if you havn’t fifteen, the opposition fields at whatever numbers you have.
However, what is hugely annoying, and we know that this happens to football
mentors as well, is that players are told about the game, usually by text
messages, and they do not bother to
reply if they are not going to the game. Some players did indicate that they
would not be there due to injury or for other reasons. However, no less than
seven players, all who had been out at earlier hurling games, did not turn up on
Sunday or did not send any message. In these days of mobile phones there is no
excuse for this. The team that did turn out on Sunday, despite the counter
attractions was: Tommy McCormack. Hugh Gough, Gavin Brennan, Kevin O’Connor,
Ciarán Maxwell, Thomas McLoughlin (1-0), Aidan Harte, Trevor Martin (0-1),
Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-6), Adrian Gallogly (0-2), Adrian Smith (0-1), Seán
McCartin.
Pota Óir
is now at €4,200. Next Monday’s draw is in Galligan’s. Winners of €40
last week were: Seán Mac Conduibh, Marie Fleming, Corlough, Fiona Kielty c/o
Sandra McKeon, Noel Connolly, Drumreilly, Barry Moran, Melican, Vanessa Hayden,
Main St. Numbers drawn were: 65213704.
There
will be a general club meeting on 5 November in the Community Centre.

and we were hoping for the game to end long before the finish. The loss of a
number of players from the Manorhamilton game did not help but it wouldn’t
have bridged the big gap between the teams. Good luck to St Mary’s in the
Connacht Championship against Oran of Roscommon next Saturday. They certainly
are the strongest club team ever to come out of Leitrim. Team and scorers: Liam
Ferguson, David McGovern, Ciaran Maxwell, Mark Egan, Kevin O’Connor, Gavin
Brennan, Derek Moran, Peter Dolan, Thomas McLoughlin, Tony Meehan, Ruairí Ó
Suilleabháin (0-3), Daniel Hughes, Adrian Gallogly, Adrian Smith, Trevor
Martin. Sub: Rory O’Rourke.
We will
play Manorhamilton in the B final this weekend, day and time to be fixed.
There
will be a Minor Hurling Championship this year and we will play St Mary’s in
the first round, possibly the week-end after next.
Two years ago we beat St Mary’s in under 16 but lost the final narrowly
to Mohill. We may have some training at the weekend and players will be
informed.
Congratulations
to the Ballinamore Schools team who won the Mini Sevens played in Páirc Seán
between the two games on Sunday. They beat Leitrim NS by 1-1 to 0-2. The point
came in the first half from Stephen McTague and the crucial goal came after half
time from Mark McGrory. The Leitrim lads put on great pressure and only some
great saves from Eoin McHugh kept them out. It was great to see Ballinamore lads
on the pitch on Co Final day and, le cúnamh Dé, we will see these lads in the
future on the big occasion at Senior or other levels. Congratulations to their
trainers, Noel McKeon and Séamus McTague. The panel was: Eoin McHugh, Evan
Gallagher, Conor McTague, Shane Moran, Stephen McTague, Mark McGrory, John
Fanning, Jack Cullen, Brian Beirne, Enda McNiffe.
Annaduff’s
victory in the senior championship was certainly one of the most extraordinary
success stories of recent times. To win a senior championship it is often said
you first need a run of underage success. Well Annaduff’s success at underage
level has been virtually nil. On Sunday they played with commitment and
confidence that you would think was built on years of success. It certainly was
inspirational and should rub off on us as we beat them twice last year, in the
championship proper and in the B final. Congratulations also to
Glencar/Manorhamilton who won the B final and this win should also be a reminder
to us that we only lost to them this year in the last five minutes.
Commiserations to Gortletteragh who ended up like we did against Melvin Gaels in
1998, favourites going in but losers coming out.
Junior
Shield against Manorhamilton in Manorhamilton on 31 Oct. Training on Saturday in
St Felim’s at 4.00.
All pubs
in the town have now been given small signs of different sorts either bilingual
or as Gaeilge amháin. We would like to thank all the publicans who have put up
these signs. It all adds up to the image of Ballinamore as a town where a lot of
Gaeilge is to be seen and heard. Indeed if any shop or other premises is
intending to put up signage of any type, either on shopfronts or internally, we
would ask them to consider including a bit of Gaeilge. Má tá aon cabhair ag
teastáil, we would be glad to help.
It may
seem a long way away but tickets will soon be out for the club’s annual New
Year draw. This draw is always a good fundraiser for the club. With such big
developments in progress on the Park an even bigger effort is asked for this
year. Tickets, costing €20 each will be out in early November and the draw
will take place in Smyth’s Siopa Ól on Sunday 2 January.
The club

Pota Óir

Hurling
Final
O’Heslins
and St Mary’s play the Senior hurling final on this Saturday at 4.00. The game
is fixed for Páirc Seán but this will depend on weather conditions. The venue
may change before the weekend.
It was a
bad weekend on the mothballing front for Sean O’Heslins. Two teams in major
semi-finals and the Seniors battling to keep up in the Div 1A table. It promised
good but yielded nothing. Of the three, the most disappointing was the defeat of
Oughteragh Gaels in the Under 21 Semi-final. While the seniors and intermediates
could have no complaints, the under 21s were decidedly unlucky not to get a draw
at least. Last year we finished with a flourish, this year we just finished.
In the
2002 Under 21 final Oughteragh Gaels were in cruel luck to lose to Drumlea in
the replayed final about this time last year. Last Saturday in Carrigallen was
something similar. A great start and Gaels were up by 0-5 to 0-0 and hit at
least five wides that could have been scores. However, a Drumlea goal and a
couple of points brought them level. It was close all through the second half
but we just finished that tantalizing point behind. Team: Denis Dolan, Shane
Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, David Duignan, Barry McWeeney,
Richard McManus, Anton Arandelovic, Ronan Sharpley, Cathal Egan, Sean Murray,
Wayne Gilgunn, Conor Flynn, Gavin McWeeney, Finnian Sharpley. Sub James
McWeeney.
Seniors
Lose Badly to Aughnasheelin.
If there
were any sort of back-door out of the new Aughnasheelin pitch, Ballinamore folk
would have slid out quietly at half time on last Sunday. At half-time it was
Aughnasheelin 3-5, Sean O’Heslin’s 0-0. After 16 minutes of the second half
we still hadn’t scored. The extraordinary part of it was that with a bit of
luck, we could have possibly leveled it in the last fourteen minutes, such was
our superiority in that period. A couple of goal chances missed and a few points
as well. However, we wouldn’t have deserved it given the total dominance of
Aughnasheelin for the first half especially. It was strange really. A few weeks
ago, with a makeshift team, we beat Aughnasheelin in the championship, if only
by the narrowest of margin. The first half on Sunday was a disaster.
Aughnasheelin hit a glorious patch and we were destroyed. In the second half
Aughnasheelin only scored a point. Sean Murray was in scoring form for
O’Heslins and got all of our 1-4, and with a bit of luck could have got as
much more. It ended 3-6 to 1-4. Footnote: In the 1959 Senior Championship Final,
Sean O’Heslins failed to score at all. They were beaten by Melvin Gaels by 1-6
to 0-0.
Team on
Sunday: Tommy McCormack, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Rory O’Rourke, Shane
Ferguson, Liam Ferguson, John McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin, Thomas McLoughlin,
Ronan Sharpley, David Duignan, Joe Honeyman, Anthony McTague, Finnian Sharpley,
Paul Prior, Sean Murray (1-4).
Within
two minutes James McWeeney had the ball in the net to give us a great start
against St Mary’s on Sunday. Peter Dolan followed with another good point and
things were looking good. At half time it was still good enough as we had a 1-2
to 0-4 lead. However it must be said that St Mary’s had shot a litany of
wides. St Mary’s got a lucky goal after the break followed by a penalty.
However, Denis Dolan made two great saves from the penalty and rebound. In the
second half we battled bravely. Good scores from Adrian Smith, Adrian Gallogly,
James McWeeney (free), Peter Dolan and the score of the match from Anton
Arandelovic kept us in the game until the final five minutes. At that stage it
was level. However St Mary’s finished the better and got the final four points
to win by 1-11 to 1-7. In the end lack of fitness was the critical factor but we
certainly did not give in without a fight. Team: Denis Dolan, Joe McTague, Gavin
Brennan, Ciaran Maxwell, Kevin O’Connor, Francis Dolan, Alan Prior, Ray Logan,
Anton Arandelovic, James McWeeney, Peter Dolan, Peter Reynolds, Adrian Gallogly,
Adrian Smith, Adrian Murphy. Subs: Gordon Hughes and Jason Kellett.
Ballinamore
will be represented on Co Final day by the Ballinamore Schools team in the Final
of the Mini Sevens. They play Leitrim NS at the interval between the two senior
finals. The team overcame a number of other schools including Carrick and
Kinlough to reach the final. The panel is as follows: Eoin McHugh, Stephen
McTague, Conor McTague, Evan Gallagher, Mark McGrory, Jack Cullen, John Fanning,
Enda McNiffe, Shane Moran, Brian Beirne.

Under
21s Win
Oughteragh
Gaels had a good win over St Francis in Aughnasheelin on Sunday morning. Points
came from Gavin McWeeney, Conor Flynn, Sean Murray and Ronan Sharpley and at
half time Gaels led by 0-4 to 0-3 but they should have been further ahead. St
Francis had a period of dominance early in the second half and they scored three
points to lead by 0-6 to 0-4. The Gaels took over from then on and should have
the game wrapped up only for missing some good chances. However, Sean Murray and
Anton Arandelovic got points and then Gavin McWeeney pointed a succession of
frees to get victory by 0-10 to 0-6. It was a keenly fought game watched by a
good crowd. Team and scorers: Denis Dolan, Shane Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin,
Liam Ferguson, David Duignan, Barry McWeeney, Richard McManus, Anton Arandelovic
(0-1), Ronan Sharpley (0-1), James McWeeney, Sean Murray (0-2), Wayne Gilgunn,

Historic
Win For Under 16s
Sean
O’Heslins took the Under 16 (15-a-side) Championship with a dramatic win over
St Mary’s in Páirc Seán on Saturday last. It is hard to believe that this
was O’Heslins first under 16 A Championship since 1980. Is fada an lá ach tháinig
sé ar deireadh. A more dramatic game you would seldom see. It was an amazing
victory because for much of the game St Mary’s looked the stronger team but
O’Heslins played with the fire and spirit of O’Heslins teams of times past.
They got a great start when Shane Reynolds got a great goal after a couple of
minutes. Points followed from John Christie, Jim McTague and Shane Murphy,
giving us 1-3 before St Mary’s got their first point. The Carrick lads
didn’t know what hit them. Jim McTague got another point followed by two from
Carrick. It was now 1-4 to 0-3, as Carrick hit wide after wide. With minutes to
go to half-time Darren McGrory got a point and then Stephen Rymes Thompson got
another great goal. Thus, at half time, we were up by eight points, 2-5 to 0-3.
The question was would it be enough, particularly as full back Michael Costello
had to go off with a knee injury just before half-time.
St
Mary’s got the first three points of the second half to reduce it to two.
Darren McGrory got a magnificent point from a solo effort. St Mary’s virtually
owned the ball for most of the second half. The Ballinamore half backs were
being overwhelmed by the physically stronger St Mary’s forwards. However St
Mary’s continued to hit wide after wide. Eventually, their midfielder, Ray
Mulvey, kicked three unbelievable points from long range frees and then our
world seemed to cave in when St Mary’s got a lucky break for a goal. The sides
were level and with the pressure we were under it seemed highly unlikely we
could hold out. At this stage the fight was on and our lads put on the pressure
again. It fell to Darren McGrory to score the point of the match to put us ahead
again with five minutes left. Nails were bitten to the skin in those last
minutes. Both teams squandered a couple of chances but the final whistle brought
great relief and a historic eight Under 16 Championship to Cannaboe. After 24
years, there can be none sweeter.
Shane
Reynolds Gets Cup
After a
victory that the lads will never forget and indeed a turning point in the
fortunes of our underage teams, Sean O’Heslin’s man, Walter Sharpley, who is
also Bord na nÓg Treasurer, presented the trophy to Captain, Shane Reynolds.
For these lads who have known defeat to St Mary’s over the years this was
great news. In 2002, when these lads were under 12s they lost the championship
final to St Mary’s by 2-10 to 0-10. Two years ago in 2002, when they were
under 14s, they lost the final to St Mary’s by 4-9 to 0-6. Many times they
might have said “ Tiochfaidh ár lá”. Anois tá an lá tagtha. The team
mentors Sean Reynolds, Padraig McKeon and John Prior deserve the height of
praise for bringing this team along despite many heartbreaking defeats in the
past. Thanks too to Frank and Ita Flynn for sponsorship.
Philip
Farrelly made some good saves in goal and was a busy man with kick-outs alone as
St Mary’s had about fifteen wides to our three or four. Paul Darcy, Michael
Costello and Joseph Murphy were very solid all through, but Joseph Murphy’s
display was outstanding. The half back line of Kevin Prior, Wayne McKeon and
Enda Quinn had a busy day as they were playing three big forward, bigger than
any of them. They never gave up. Jim McTague and Philip Murphy played their
hearts out at midfield and Jim McTague did likewise when moved to full back in
the second half. John Christie, Shane Reynolds and Stephen Rymes Thompson played
wonderful in the first half especially and got some great scores. Darren
Reynolds, Darren McGrory and Shane Murphy made wonderful use of the limited ball
that came their way. Shane Murphy did trojan work all through and if there was a
“Man of the Match” award it would have to go to Darren McGrory. He got the
only two scores we got in the second half and both were works of individual
genius. One could not forget the only sub used, Neil Hughes, who came on for
Michael Costello and played wonderfully. The other subs were: Éamon Walsh,
Shane McWeeney, Séamus Donnelly, Ross Dooner, David Leyden.
1980
– The last Under 16 success
The last
time Ballinamore won the premier under 16 competition in the county was in 1980.
At that time the competition was divided into Towns and Rural, and Ballinamore
won the Towns competition. They beat Mohill in Aughavas in the final in June
1980 by 3-2 to 1-1. The competition at that time was 13-a-side and that was
O’Heslins seventh time to win the title, the previous wins were in 1960,1961,
1963, 1975,1976 and 1977. Who would believe it would take 24 years to win
another one. One remarkable coincidence was that one of the corner backs last
Saturday was Joseph Murphy and twenty-four years ago Joseph’s father, also
Joseph, was at corner back on the winning team. The club’s record keeper, Hugh
McTague, has come up with the team in 1980 which was as follows: Brian Mahon,
Francis Milton, Joseph Murphy, Damien Dolan, Ray Dolan, Paul Kelleher, Patrick
Martin (1-0), Francis Maguire (Capt) (1-0), Brian Breen (1-1), Gerry Curran,
Liam Conlon (0-1), Paul Kieran,
Paschal Flynn. Eight of that team
of thirteen subsequently won senior championship medals with Sean O’Heslins
but more remarkably, three of them were on the Leitrim panel that won the
Connacht Senior Championship in 1994. Paul Kieran would have been the youngest
on that team at thirteen years of age.
A

Seniors
Defeated in B Quarter Final
Our
seniors made their exit from the B Championship when they lost to
Glencar/Manorhamilton in Ballinaglera on Saturday. For most of this game we
seemed capable of winning it, apart from the first ten minutes when we fell
three points behind. However, by half time it was 0-5 each and looking good.
Paul Prior had pointed two frees and good points from Paul McLoughlin, Brian
Cafferty and David Duignan. Both teams had a number of chances but scores were
very hard to come by. With twenty minutes gone in the second half both teams had
added just one point and the game still level. Then disaster in the goalmouth, a
mixture of hesitancy and opportunism, but a goal that shouldn’t have happened.
Manorhamilton added a couple of points and we just got one more from a Paul
Prior free. It ended 1-9 to 0-7 but it was closer than that on the field. So
ends our championship run but we have three more league games to play. Team:
Aidan Harte, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Rory O’Rourke, Shane Ferguson, David
Duignan (0-1), John McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin, Ronan Sharpley, Thomas
McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Liam Ferguson, Paul
Prior (0-4), Ciaran Murray, Sean Murray. Subs: Paul Kieran, Finnian Sharpley,
Joe Honeyman, Anthony McTague.
The
first game in the senior hurling championship was played last Sunday in
Aughawillan. At half time we looked home-and-dried with a ten-point lead, 2-6 to
0-2.
Aidan Harte had got a goal in the first minute, Ruairí O Suilleabháin pointed
two frees and got two from play and Ronan Sharpley and Adrian Smith had one
each. Before half time Aidan Harte had another goal. However hurling is a game
where a big lead can evaporate very quickly. Within five minutes of the restart
Manorhamilton had the ball in the net three times, and there was just a point in
it. However a goal from Ronan Sharpley and points from Trevor Martin, Adrian
Smith and Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin saved the day. It finished 3-9 to 3-4. Team
was: Tommy McCormack, David McGovern, Ciaran Maxwell, Mark Egan, Kevin
O’Connor, Gavin Brennan, Thomas McLoughlin, Peter Dolan, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin,
Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin
(0-5),
Aidan Harte (2-0), Ronan Sharpley (1-1), Adrian Gallogly, Adrian Smith (0-2),
Trevor Martin (0-1). Subs: Derek Moran, Paul McLoughlin, Finnian Sharpley.
It looks
as if this victory will put us into the A Final against St Mary’s. With the
way senior football is progressing, and the limited time to the Connacht Club
championship, the B hurling will be finished after the A County final.

Seniors
Win First Round of “B”
It
turned out to be the best weekend of the year so far for our adult football
teams as both the seniors and intermediates progressed in the championship. The
seniors were up against it against Aughnasheelin on Sunday morning, with half a
dozen players out through holidays or injury. In the first half they were in
serious trouble and trailed by 0-7 to 0-0 after 25 minutes with Gavin McWeeney
on great scoring form for Aughnasheelin. Sean Murray then put over two frees and
Paul McLoughlin came to the rescue with a goal to leave only two points in it at
half time. In the second half we did better, and Aughnasheelin’s scoring rate
slackened. Sean Murray scored three points and Ronan Sharpley one. Then, with
the sides level, Paul McLoughlin saved our bacon with a great pointed free from
60 yards. It finished 1-7 to 0-9 and we thus progressed to the quarter finals of
the B competition. Team: Michael Dolan, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Rory
O’Rourke, Shane Ferguson, Anthony McTague, John McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin,
Thomas McLoughlin, Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Brian Cafferty, Paul Prior, Paul
McLoughlin (1-1), Tommy McCormack, Ciaran Murray, Sean Murray (0-5). Sub,

The
Intermediates had a good win over Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday in
Ballinaglera. The two teams met in the first round a few weeks ago when
Manorhamilton won by nine points. The repeat match turned out different
altogether and straight from the throw-in we were dominant. Indeed the first
half performance was exceptional and by half time we led by 0-9 to 0-1. Peter
Dolan scored four excellent points from play, James McWeeney got three, two of
them from frees and Anton Arandelovic and Ray Logan got the other two. The game
seemed over at half time but the Glencar/Manor lads didn’t give up. They got a
great goal, which set them alight, and they dominated the exchanges. James
McWeeney got three second half points, Kevin O’Connor got one great one and
Peter Reynolds got our last one to put us five up. However Manorhamilton got a
last minute penalty, which they scored, to leave it 0-14 to 2-6. But for two
great saves from Denis Dolan we could have let it slip. However, the Manor
goalie also brought off a great save from Peter Dolan in the first minute of the
second half, which might have finished it at that time. Team: Denis Dolan, Gavin
Brennan, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Ciaran Maxwell, Alan Prior, Francis Dolan,
Kevin O’Connor (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Ray Logan (0-1), James McWeeney
(0-6), Peter Reynolds (0-1), Peter Dolan (0-4), Adrian Gallogly, Adrian Smith,
Adrian Murphy.

Intermediates Beat Carrigallen
After seven championship games, between senior and intermediate, we finally got a win and a good one it was too against Carrigallen on Sunday morning. We got a great start, the very opposite to the drawn game. A week earlier Ballinamore were five points down before they knew where they were. On Sunday Anton Arandelovic got a quick point and Peter Dolan got another. Then Peter Dolan soloed fifty yards, rounded a couple of players, to score as good a goal as you would see anywhere. Within a couple of minutes, James McWeeney finished a move with another great goal. Adrian Smith added a point. We were now leading by 2-3 to 0-0. It was hard to believe these were the same two teams that met a week earlier. Carrigallen didn’t give up. They got two good points and a gift of a goal and at half time it was 2-3 to 1-2. Peter Dolan got two quick points from play to settle things after the break. Carrigallen pulled it back a bit but good scores from James McWeeney, Adrian Smith twice and Anton Arandelovic put us in the quarter final on a score of 2-9 to 1-6.
The wining of this game centered on the outstanding midfield performances of Anton Arandelovic and Ray Logan. The half back line of Alan Prior, Francis Dolan and Kevin O’Connor was excellent as was the half forward line of James McWeeney, Peter Reynolds and Peter Dolan. The full back line was also sound, and what about Adrian’s Wall. There was a time when Adrian’s Wall was a defence fortification, but in Aughawillan last Sunday it was in attack, as the full forward line was made up of three Adrians, Adrian Gallogly, Adrian Smith and Adrian Murphy. Team and Scorers: Denis Dolan, Jason Kellett, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Ciaran Maxwell, Alan Prior, Francis Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Ray Logan, James McWeeney (1-1), Peter Reynolds, Peter Dolan (1-3), Adrian Gallogly, Adrian Smith (0-3), Adrian Murphy, Subs: Shane Creamer, Sean McCartin
Seniors Draw with Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher
Our seniors drew with Glenfarne/Kilty on Saturday. There was nothing at stake in this game as both teams were out of the championship. There was never much in it, but we kicked a lot of wides in the final quarter and probably should have clinched it. Final score, Seán O’Heslins 0-8, Glenfarne 1-5 Team was: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Shane Ferguson, Rory O’Rourke, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, John McWeeney, David Duignan, Paul Kieran, Thomas McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty, Joe Honeyman, Anthony McTague, Seán Murray, Paul McLoughlin, Paul Prior.

Intermediates
Draw with Carrigallen
On a
couple of occasions this intermediate team looked dead and buried but they
refused to yield and in the end got a deserved draw against Carrigallen in
Aughawillan on Sunday morning. This certainly was a game that turned from side
to side. In the first half Carrigallen were greatly on top and led by 0-6 to 0-1
well into the half. It could have been a bigger margin but for a few good saves
from Aiden Harte. Adrian Gallogly and James McWeeney added two points to the
total before the interval leaving only three in it at half-time. Carrigallen
started the second half well and led by six points again before James McWeeney
scored a wonderful goal to bring it down to three. Within a minute disaster
struck. Carrigallen got a freak goal when a high ball deceived Aiden Harte in
the goals and a further Carrigallen point left us seven behind. It looked lost.
However, that was when the Ballinamore lads started to play, led by Ray Logan
and Francis Dolan in particular, but in fact everyone rowed in. Ray Logan,
Adrian Gallogly, James McWeeney and Adrian Smith all scored points. Then a few
chances of points were squandered before we were awarded a penalty. Ray Logan
was the man to take it and he made no mistake. We could have snatched it in the
final minutes but a draw was a fair result. Final score, O’Heslins 2-7
Carrigallen 1-10. Team and scorers: Aidan Harte, Ciaran Maxwell, Gavin Brennan,
Joe McTague, Kevin O’Connor, Francis Dolan, Alan Prior, Ray Logan (1-1), Anton
Arandelovic, James McWeeney (1-2), Peter Dolan (0-1), David Earley, Adrian
Gallogly (0-2), Adrian Smith (0-1), Gordon Hughes. Sub, Peter Reynolds
The
under 12 girls are playing great stuff in the 7-a-side league. They beat
Ballinaglera, lost narrowly to Fenagh and on Monday last they beat Allen Gaels
in a very exciting game by 2-13 to 4-5. They now play Cloone next Saturday.
Their panel is Niamh Donnelly, Lauren McGrory, Gillian Leyden, Katie Duignan,
Ciara O’Dowd, Ciara McTague, Megan O’Connor, Dawn Flynn, Laura O’Dowd, Róisín
McTague, Aoibheann Curran, Phillipa O’Reilly

tonight Wednesday in St Felim’s at 8.00.

Seniors
Lose
Our
senior “A” championship endeavours for 2004 ended in Cloone on Saturday
evening. There were two views one could have after this game. The first is that
Carrigallen are stronger than any of the other teams in the group and are
streets ahead of St Mary’s or Allen Gaels, both of whom were lucky enough to
beat us. Carrigallen certainly looked to be in a different league altogether and
the game was effectively over at half time when they led by 2-5 to 0-4. The
other view is that we gave the most miserable display since Ballinaglera beat us
last summer in Carrick. For whatever reason we lost badly and Carrigallen were
worth every point of their 3-12 to 0-7 victory. Now it is on to the “B”
championship and lets hope we can repeat last year’s success. After an awful
performance when losing to Ballinaglera last year it seemed the end of the road,
but three games later and we were celebrating victory in the “B”
championship. Hopefully the same can happen in 2004. Team and scorers last
Saturday. Michael Dolan, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Shane Ferguson, Patrick
McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, Rory O’Rourke, John McWeeney, Paul Kieran, Tomas
McLoughlin, David Duignan, Ronan Sharpley, Brian Cafferty, Paul Prior (0-4),
Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Seán Murray. Subs: Colm Brennan, Ciaran Murray (0-1),
Finnian Sharpley (0-1).
We
conceded our first round game in the junior championship because of lack of
numbers. The intermediate game was postponed due to the pitch in Annaduff being
unplayable.
The
under 16s won their first round game against Carrigallen on Monday. The minors
and under 14s are now both out of the championship.
There
will be draws for premium tickets for this Saturday’s Fermanagh v Mayo replay
and also for Sunday’s Kerry v Derry. Draw will take place on Thursday night.

Next Monday’s draw is in Lawrence’s. Pota Óir is €3,300. Winners of €40 last Monday were: Frank Kelly, Ballycumber, Bernadette Mitchell, Drumreilly, Tess Gallagher, Stradermot, Zoe Prior, Park Rd, Shane Harte, John Galligan. Bottle of Whiskey: John Harte. Numbers drawn: 02364517.

Our
Seniors suffered their second loss of the championship on Saturday evening. On
the positive side it wasn’t bad to be within three points of the Co Senior
Champions and the team that ran Caltra to a point in the Connacht Championship.
On the otherhand this defeat means that we are highly likely to be confined to
the B Championship this year again if we hope to win senior silverware. A bad
first half performance was the cause of or downfall. At half-time St Mary’s
led by 0-8 to 0-2, and our two points had come from two frees by Paul Prior. The
second half was “ i bhfad níos fearr”. We outscored St Mary’s by 1-6 to
0-6 in the second half although, it must be admitted, Carrick’s inaccuracy in
the second half was a great help. However, we never gave up and apart from one
Paul Prior free, all of our second half scores were from play. Sean Murray did
great work to set up the goal for Paul McLoughlin. Paul Kieran hit the crossbar
with a rasper which, in the end, could have given us a draw. The game ended 0-14
to 1-8 in Carrick’s favour. Two games and two defeats, both by just three
points, and in both games the crossbar denied us goals, by Ciaran Murray against
Allen Gaels and by Paul Kieran last Saturday. Team and scorers:
Michael Dolan, Anthony McTague, Rory O’Rourke, Patrick McLoughlin,
David Duignan (0-1), Shane Ferguson, Liam Ferguson, Paul Kieran, Ronan Sharpley
(0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, Joe Honeyman, Brian Cafferty, Paul Prior (0-5), Paul
McLoughlin (1-0), Finnian Sharpley. Subs: John McWeeney, Sean Murray (0-1)
It was a
bad week for our championship hopes as our intermediates lost heavily to
Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday. It was looking quite good up to half-time. In
fact there was only a point in it on the thirty minutes, but extra time lasted
over six minutes during which time Manorhamilton scored four points. We
struggled badly in the second half and it finished 0-18 to 0-9. Our best
displays came from Gavin Brennan, Ray Logan and young James McWeeney who pointed
five frees and got one from play, Team and scorers: Colm Brennan, Darragh
Keenaghan, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin,
Joe McTague, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Ray Logan, Alan Prior, Peter Dolan (0-1),
James McWeeney (0-6), Tommy McCormack, Adrian Smith, Gordon Hughes (0-1). Subs:
Aidan Harte, David Earley, Adrian Gallogly. A minute’s silence was observed
before the game in memory of the late Michael Clancy, who died tragically in
Spain. The Sean O’Heslins club
extends its sympathy to the Clancy family. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air.

from farther afield who sponsored teams and tees as well. Our particular thanks
to Ballinamore Golf Club for the use of their facilities. The day ended with a
great night in the clubhouse with Tomás Ó Moráin as fear-a-tí
