Míle
buíochas to all our ticket sellers, especially the big four, P J
McLoughlin, Brid Sullivan, Adrian Wrynn and Philip Farrelly. Thanks
also to Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin and Anne Shanley who did most of
the administrative work on the draw. Thanks to Gay Prior for
sponsorship of the €1,000 second prize. Special thanks to all who
bought tickets. With the massive debt on the club complex,
fundraising will be high on our agenda for a long time to come. Míle
buíochas do gach duine.
Tommy
Moran stepped down as Chairman of the Finance Committee some weeks
ago and thus ended a lifetime of services in different positions at
club, county, provincial and national level for the GAA. Since the
mid 1960s when he was club Chairman, Tommy has held a huge variety
of posts at all levels, indeed holding more than just one
responsibility on many occasions. To list all of the positions he
held would take some time, but the chief of those would be his
eighteen years as Rúnaí Contae from 1982-1999 and his three years
as Uachtarán of Connacht Council from 2003 –2006. No later than a
few weeks ago he edited Scéal Liatroma 1984-2009, the story of
football in Leitrim during the last 25 years. At club level, Tommy
was Chairman of the Finance Committee which looked after fundraising
for the Pitch development over the past few years. This was a major
task in itself. Tommy proposes to take a rest but I am sure he will
be there to help and his advice sought on many occasions in the
future. On Saturday last his final official function as Finance
Chairman was to preside over the New Year draw. After the draw, a
presentation was made to Tommy, on behalf of the club, by Anne
Shanley.
Welcome
to New Officers
With
so many officers retiring it is great to see a new team taking on
the challenge of leading the club into 2010. New Cathaoirleach,
Peter Reynolds, has of course been a prominent player with the club
over the past long number of years. Peter won a senior championship
with the club in 1990 and still plays junior football with the club.
The Reynolds family are no strangers to club administration.
Peter’s grandfather Paddy Reynolds TD was Vive Chairman of Leitrim
County Board from 1926 until his death in 1932. Patsy is a native of
Oran, Co Roscommon and as a Roscommon man he completes an unusual
line up of Secretaries who were natives of all five Connacht
counties. Over the past decade we have had Andy Duffy (From Mayo),
Niall Gormley (From Leitrim), Brid Sullivan (From Galway), Alan
Banks (From Sligo) and now Patsy Connaughton (From Roscommon). In
the middle we had Paddy O’Connor (From Tipperary) However Patsy
Connaughton has the unique distinction of having previously been
Secretary of the Aughawillan club. Strange things happen in sport!!.
Our
new Cisteoir and Chairman of the Finance Committee is John D’Arcy
from High St. John is also from a Ballinamore footballing family and
played underage football and hurling with the club. Our new
Registrar, Tommy Dolan has also been involved with the club both as
a player and team manager with our junior teams. Go n-éirí go geal
leo go léir.
Outgoing
Officers
In
welcoming our new oifigigh we must pay tribute to the officers who
led us through the most glorious period of development the club has
ever had. Adrian Smith, probably the youngest Cathaoirleach the club
ever had, served three years in charge. Alan Banks completed two
years as Rúnaí but was also Cathaoirleach for a year a few years
earlier. Anne Shanley was Cisteoir for the past nine years and was
the first lady to hold a full officer position with the club. Anne
was the longest serving Treasurer the club has ever had, at least in
the period for which we have records. Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin has
been Registrar for two separate periods. No doubt all of them will
continues to serve the club in various ways, indeed Alan Banks has
taken on the position of Park administrator in charge of booking and
scheduling of games, fixtures and training and also events in the
complex itself. Míle buíochas to all of them for the outstanding
work they have done over the past number of years.
The
Ciorcal Comhrá – Irish Conversation evenings will start in
Ballinamore Library on Tuesday next 12 January at 8.30. Every year a
great crowd attends these sessions and they are most enjoyable. If
you are interested, please give name to the Library by calling or
ringing 9645582. As usual there will be a beginners and a more
advanced group. Admission is free.
Scór
na nÓg Finals
Best
of luck to our competitors in the Scór na nÓg finals in Cluainín
Uí Ruairc on Sunday. We will be represented in Trath na gCeist and
two items in Rince Seit.
The
AGM of our club Coiste na nÓg will be held in the Clubrooms on
Wednesday 27 January at 8.30 pm. All mentors and parents are invited
to attend. Anyone who has any matters that they would like to have
put on the agenda for this meeting please forward to Rúnaí, Patsy
Connaughton.
All
underage mentors are asked to list all playing gear or equipment
needed for the their teams for the coming year and give these lists
to Patsy Connaughton so as we can purchase all requirements in bulk.
Adult
membership of the club is set at €30 and underage membership at
€10 each. However, it has been decided to have a maximum payment
from any individual household of €80. Thus both parents and any
number of children can join for that amount. Many mothers also help
out with club activities and it is important from an insurance
position that they are also registered members.
The club extends sympathy to
the O’Rourke Family, Church St on the tragic death of Ryan last
weekend. Ryan played underage football and hurling with the club .

Our New Year draw is on this Saturday, 2 January in Priors. It will as usual be a big night, indeed it is one of the biggest nights of the Christmas period. The draw is of major importance to our finances so all sellers are asked to make a special effort to dispose of all of their tickets. Would all sellers please return the tickets they have sold to date to Ruairí O Suilleabháin by tomorrow night at the latest? Phone 087 2488875. Even if you have further tickets to dispose of it is a great help to have most of the money in advance rather than have to deal with large amounts on the night.
The
new Registrar is Tommy Dolan and Tommy would like if all players and
members could forward club membership as soon as possible.
Membership is the same as last year at €30 for adults and €10
for underage players. Please contact Tommy at 086 8171587

as many tickets as they can.. The draw will take place on Saturday

Saturday
last was a historic occasion as club members lined up for the first
AGM in the club’s own premises. There was a great sense of pride
and achievement as outgoing officers: Cathaoirleach, Adrian Mac
Gabhann: Rúnaí, Alan Ó Bruacháin and Cisteoir, Áine Ní
Sheanlaoich all presented their final addresses and reports to the
members. The 56 members in attendance were very appreciative of the
extraordinary work done by all of the outgoing officers over the
past few years. Outgoing Cathaoirleach, Adrian Mac Gabhann, gave a
rousing address and paid tribute too all of the officers and members
who helped him through three eventful years in Office.
Outgoing Rúnaí, Alan Banks,
presented a detailed Secretary’s report and Anne Shanley,
after nine years as Treasurer, presented her final detailed report
of the finances. Overall it was a meeting where general satisfaction
with the club’s progress on many fronts was evident. The clubrooms
are a most comfortable location for such a meeting and the tea
afterwards kept the crowd together on a cold winter’s evening.
There
was a major turn around of officers with Adrian Smith retiring as
Cathaoirleach, Alan Banks as Rúnaí, Anne Shanley as Cisteoir and
Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin as Cláiritheoir. The following is the new
line-up of officers for 2010. Uachtarán: Hugh McTague Snr.
Leas-Uachtaráin: P.J. Dolan, An tAthair S
Ó Dubhthaigh, John Harte, George Price, Joe Gormley, Andy Duffy,
Paddy Dolan, Sean Kavanagh, Tommy Moran, Gerry Mahon. Cathaoirleach:
Peter Reynolds. Leas-Chathaoirleach: Michael Quinn.
Rúnaí: Patsy Connaughton. Rúnaí Cúnta, Alan Banks,
Cisteoir: John D’Arcy. Cisteoir Cúnta: Ann Shanley. Cláiritheoir:
Tommy Dolan. Oifigeach Árachais: Paddy O’Connor, Oifigeach Cultúir
agus Teanga: Bríd Ní Shuilleabháin. Oifigeach Caidrimh Poiblí:
Seán Ó Suilleabháin. Coiste: In addition to the main club
Officers the following were elected to the Coiste: Tom Burns,
Raymond McHugh, Anne Shanley, Diarmuid Keegan, Alan Banks, Adrian
Smith, Paddy Prior. Under 21 member: Wayne McKeon. One other under
21 member to be appointed.
The
biggest job facing the club for the next few years is clearing the
debt on the newly-developed facilities. The overall cost of
developing the two pitches, stand and dressingrooms was near to
€1.9m. Huge fundraising efforts have been made but there remains a
debt of about €900,000 to be raised. A new Finance Committee has
been formed with John D’Arcy as Cathaoirleach and some new and
novel ideas are being considered in order to raise funds. The
Treasurer’s report showed that income for 2009 was at €279,700
and expenditure was at
€310,635. However, all work on the complex is now complete and
future fundraising efforts should start to reduce the debt.
We
are appealing to every club member and supporter to contribute
regularly to the club’s finances. A number of ways in which
members and supporters could help were raised. 1) Members who do not
do our club Lotto regularly could get
a number of Lotto envelopes and drop one in to one of our
regular sellers every Monday night or to the Pub where the Lotto is
held. Check the club website if you are unsure which pub: www.seanoheslinsgaa.com.
2) Join the Lotto-on-Line from
the website 3) Contribute to our €10 a month standing order
deduction. Maybe some people already contributing €10 might
consider increasing it to €20 a month. 4) Help as a Lotto seller
at weekends. 5) Join up for the Vodafone mobile phone contribution.
This will cost you nothing.
The
new Registrar is Tommy Dolan and Tommy would like if all players and
members could forward club membership as soon as possible.

had our highest ever participation in Scór na nÓg at the weekend,
no less than sixteen different entries, which is possibly the
highest ever level of entries from any club in Leitrim. Thanks to

Ellen Wrynn, Niamh Flynn, Eadaoin McGourty, Alison Sweeney. Seán

There
were three Tráth na gCeist teams: (A)

Luke Murphy, Conor Moran. Our Nuachleas team comprised of : Doireann

In the end, two of our sets,
A and B, qualified for the finals and quiz team A. Considering that
we had sixteen entries we were probably unlucky not to have more
qualifiers, and it was especially surprising that none of our figure
dances made it. However, overall we had a very young team this year
and their participation ensures that we will be stronger in years to
come. Many thanks to all who helped as stewards and in the kitchen

Day at the Races in Fairyhouse
A great day and night was had by all at the Fairyhouse races on Saturday last. The fog was so bad that one would not know whether it was asses or camels that were running and we depended on the announcer to get the result of the race. Bad and all as it was we were lucky the races went ahead at all as the races fixed for the following day, Sunday, were cancelled due to flooding. Nobody won too much or lost too much and when it was all over all adjourned to Swan’s pub in Curragha. The woman of the house is Mary Smith, from High St Ballinamore and she had “sólaistí agus béaláistí” for the whole crowd. Swan’s is the site of the forge which is featured in the famous recitation “Páid O’Donoghue” which tells of the fight against the Yeos and Hessians in 1798. It was a great outing for the 50 plus crowd who went. Míle buíochas to Swans for providing the eagerly awaited food.

Oughteragh Gaels made it
two-in-a-row and four titles in five years when they had a decisive
win over St Mary’s on Saturday last. It was a miracle that the
game could go ahead in the midst of flooding everywhere but Páirc
Seán was in good condition, although there was a strong gale
blowing which made good football difficult. Oughteragh Gaels were
fortunate to be playing against the wind in the first half, which is
always a huge advantage. That advantage was confirmed when the sides
were level at half time at three points each. Damien Gilheany
scoring two frees and Shane Murphy with a point from play. The
reality was that Oughteragh Gaels were dominant for most of the half
and shot seven wides to St Mary’s three and could easily have been
ahead by a few points. With the wind behind them it looked likely
that Gaels would forge ahead but St Mary’s put up a great fight in
the second half. Oughteragh Gaels again had a lot of bad wides but
they did creep into a 0-8 to 0-3 lead with two points from Gavin
Sammon, one from Brendan Mulvey and two pointed frees from Damien
Gilheany. The Carrick keeper brought off a great save at this stage
but a minute later a fortunate goal from Gavin Sammon ended the game
as a contest. It finished 1-8 to 0-4.
It has been a wonderful run
of success at this level for Oughteragh Gaels. Fergal McManus and
Gavin Sammon were winning their fourth under 21 medal as members of
the starting fifteen and for Wayne McKeon and Shane Murphy it was
their third. Others like Damien Gilheany, Philip Murphy, Joe Murphy
and Kevin Prior have won three either on the team or panel. All but
three of the starting fifteen are eligible again next year. So who
knows? Well done to Manager Pauric McKeon and selectors Niall Murray
and Ronan O’Rourke.

Gaels were too strong for St Francis in the under 21 championship
semi-final in Drumreilly on Saturday. St Francis got the first point
of the game but Gaels were 1-4 to 0-1 up before St Francis scored
again. The goal was an outstanding piece of work. Wayne McKeon sent
a long accurate pass from a free to Gavin Sammon who finished
excellently. At half time it was 1-8 to 0-2 and when Shane Moran’s
shot, which seemed destined for a point, went into the net, the game
was as good as over. Gaels were 2-14 to 0-3 up when St Francis got
two goals in quick succession against the run of play, but it would
have taken a run of goals to turn the game. It ended 2-17 to 3-4.

Sign
up for “Vodafone supports your club”
If you have a mobile telephone with Vodafone you can have 5% of your
telephone payment given to the club. This costs you nothing and is
similar to the scheme with landlines through Gaelic Telecom. For
some years a lot of club members are signed up with Gaelic Telecom
and a significant contribution comes to the club through this
scheme. Now Vodafone are doing a similar scheme for mobile phones.
We would like to get as many people as possible whose network is
Vodafone to sign up for this scheme. You may be asked about this or
anyone interested please let Brid Sullivan know (071 9644227).
Already a large number of people have signed up and we wish to say
“Míle Buíochas” to all of them.

Stephen
Doorigan under 12 hurling blitz
On Friday last, the 30th
October, we had five teams taking part in the inaugural Stephen
Dorrigan hurling Blitz. St.
Mary’s, Manorhamilton, Gortletteragh, Ballinamore and for the
first time, Kiltubrid, who have only recently formed a hurling club.
In bad weather conditions, each team played each other and in the
end, Manorhamilton won the beautiful trophy for the first time,
beating Gortletteragh narrowly in the final.
The emphasis was on fun and
even though the players were drenched to the skin, the quality of
hurling was brilliant. Our team was Mark O’Reilly, Pearse Dolan,
James Hamill, Peter Reynolds, Darragh Murphy and Niall McGovern.
Thanks to Denis O’Brien for his help on the day
Sean
Walsh senior hurling tournament.
This senior Hurling 9 a side
Tournament took place in the Park on Sat. last for the first time,
to honour a young man, Sean Walsh, from Dungarvan in Waterford who
hurled for some time with St. Mary’s.
He went travelling to Australia where, earlier this year, he
went missing. It was a fitting event organised by his many friends
in St. Mary’s and it was good to meet Sean’s parents and friends
from Dungarvan.
The eight teams who took
part thoroughly enjoyed the day and compliments must go to every one
involved, especially the catering staff from St. Mary’s, who
supplied such wonderful food all day. Our team competed very well
and learned a lot from the day.
Practice makes perfect and these young lads with a couple of
old heads, improved remarkably through out the day.
We beat Woodford Gaels and lost narrowly to St. Mary’s and
Dungarvan, both finalists. The
honours went to Dungarvan in the final in a fine great game of
hurling. Thanks to Kevin and Olcan and the committee for such a
great day’s sport.
Our team was Joe Earley,
Capt, Adrian Smith, Brendan Mulvey, Shane Moran, Sean McWeeney,
Kevin O’Connor, Paul Earley, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Paddy
McManus, Vincent Mulvey, Éamon Walsh and Keith Boyle.
Thanks to Conor Harte and Denis O’Brien for helping out on
the day. Thanks also to Kevin and Brian Banks, Conor and Paul Moran
and Michael O’Dell for collecting sliothars all evening in the
drenching rain
Due to the atrocious weather
conditions over the past weekend, we must avoid using the main pitch
for a period. It is fair to say too much activity has taken place
there over the past few weeks, much of which could be adequately
catered for on the second pitch. We ask all mentors to keep to the
training pitch for all purposes from now on.

Juniors
lose Division 4 Final.
Despite being already
promoted to Division 4 it would have been nice to win that division
and we were very close to it. We started very well and led by 0-4 to
0-1 when a goal against the run of play set us back. We were down
1-5 to 0-4 at half time when we could have been closer. We dominated
the second half but just could not get enough scores. We missed a
few chances and got within a point with time nearly up. However that
leveller just didn’t come and Kiltubrid got the final point. It
ended 1-8 to 0-9.

Oughteragh Gaels put in a
splendid second half performance to beat Drumlea by 1-16 to 0-10. It
looked a very unlikely outcome at half time as Drumlea led by 0-6 to
0-4 and three of Oughteragh’s points came from Damien Gilheany
frees. Drumlea went three ahead in the second half but who would
believe that they would be so outclassed in the last quarter. Some
brilliant points from Damien Gilheany and Brendan Mulvey were
followed by a great goal finished by Damien Gilheany and that set
Oughteragh Gaels alight. Indeed in the last ten minutes they could
do little wrong and finished ahead by 1-16 to 0-10. The semi-final
against St Francis is on Saturday week.

Lotto
in the Park
We had the biggest crowd yet in the clubrooms as, for the first time, the
club weekly lotto was held there on Monday night. It was great to be
able to hold such an event in the club’s own premises. It was like
a continental evening, with a mild October night, as the youngsters
gathered in the lit-up stand to watch the fireworks display after
the medals presentation. This was followed by the Lotto with extra
prizes for the youngsters present. It was another occasion which
justified the wisdom of those who planned and executed the whole
Park project. Thanks to all who made sandwiches, cakes and those who
sponsored prizes and to Peter Reynolds for organising the lights and
the fireworks display and all who helped on the night.

half and it ended 3-12 to 0-8.

Seachtaine-5 Deireadh Fo 2009
Fixtures
Our seniors play Bornacoola in a play off for Shield A at 12.00 in Cloone
on Sunday
Droch
Deireadh Seachtaine
It
was a dismal weekend for the club as no less than four teams made
their championship exits, two in championship finals. On Saturday
our under 12s were beaten by Mohill in the Under 12 Final. On
Saturday evening our senior hurlers lost the semi-final to
Glencar/Manorhamilton. On Sunday morning our Juniors lost the Junior
C Championship quarter final to Leitrim Gaels. Then on Sunday
evening, probably the biggest disappointment of all was our under
16s losing to Allen Gaels in the 13 a side Championship final.
However, that’s sporting life and another day will come when we
will be celebrating two or three successes on the same weekend. The
remaining competitions are the Division 4 League final, the Under 21
Championship, Shield A where we are involved in a play-off and of
course our final Division 1 game.
Senior
Hurlers lose to Manorhamilton
Our senior hurlers put up a
brave performance for three-quarters of the game but Manorhamilton
pulled away in the finish. The first half was very close and we got
the first point from Dan O’Brien. Manorhamilton got two points and
a goal before Shane Moran pointed. Manorhamilton went 2-4 to 0-2 up
and it was looking bad at that stage. Shane Moran pointed a free and
then Dan O’Brien got two goals in quick succession to leave only a
point in it. Manorhamilton got two further points but there was only
three in it at half time, 2-6 to 2-3. We got the first two scores of
the second half, points from Shane Moran and Brendan Mulvey and
there was only a point in it again. However Manorhamilton were
fortunate to get a soft goal and from there on our only reply was a
good point from Kevin O’Connor. It finished 3-13 to 2-6.
Once again the serious
problem of arranging hurling fixtures left us in difficulty. The
fact that the fixture was sandwiched between crucial football
fixtures for some of the clubs involved did us no favours at all. It
was unfair on the Aughnasheelin contingent to have to field
immediately after a crucial football tie, and it is to their great
credit that they played, and played well, despite having to come
from a losing dressingrooms after a hard game.
Foireann: Tommy McCormack,
Paddy McManus, Gavin Brennan, Seán McWeeney, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin,
Liam Ferguson, Kevin O’Connor (0-1), Adrian Smith, Brendan Mulvey,

Gallogly, Dan O’Brien (2-1), Shane Moran (0-3). Subs: Denis Dolan

Sean McWeeney.
Juniors
Lose C Championship
Our Juniors had hopes of
going one better than in the past few years but were well beaten in the end by Leitrim Gaels on Sunday morning. We were
missing a few strong players from the previous weekend and this did
not help. Indeed we had just two subs.
Leitrim
Gaels got three points before Sean McCartin got our first point from
a free. Leitrim Gaels got another point and then Cormac Ó Suilleabháin
goaled from a penalty after he himself was fouled in the square. It
was level then but Leitrim Gaels had the better of the rest of the
half and were 1-8 to 1-1 ahead at half time. Leitrim Gaels got
another goal after half time and they Adrian Murphy pointed before
Peter Reynolds got a good goal. That left seven points in it. Sean McCartin pointed two frees
to bring the margin down to five, but Leitrim Gaels got a lucky goal
at this stage and that really ended it. It finished 3-12 to 2-5.
Foireann:
Michael Dolan, Jason Kellett, Francis Dolan, Seamus Donnelly, Éamon
Walsh, Freddie Walsh, Kevin Prior, Joe Murphy, Stephen Beirne, Shane
Moran, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (1-0), Sean McCartin (0-3), Alan
Prior, Adrian Murphy (0-1), Daryl McFarland. Subs: Peter Reynolds
(1-1) for D McFarland, Finbar Smith for F Dolan.
Under
12s Lose Championship Final
Our under 12s fought their very best against Mohill on Saturday morning
in Cloone but were beaten by a stronger Mohill team. Early in the
game we had chances and shot a number of wides but throughout the
game Mohill defended well and blocked everything. At half-time there
were only four points in it, 0-5 to 0-1, and on the run of play we
could have been level at least. However, Mohill were the better team
in the second half and it ended 2-11 to 0-7. These young lads had a
great run in this year’s competition and it is not everyone who
gets a chance to play in a county final at such a young age. It is
also quite likely that in years ahead they will reverse the result
at under 14 and under 16 level. Well done to the team mentors:
Philip Murphy, Peter Reynolds, Joe Feely, Liam Ferguson and Brian
Breen (See full report of match in this weeks Observer sports pages)
Foireann: Darren Maxwell, Daragh Reynolds, James Hamill, Adam Goldrick, Róisín
McHugh, Mark O’Reilly, Daire Murphy, Niall McGovern, Donal Feely,

Under
16s lose Championship Final
Just a few weeks ago this Sean O’Heslins team beat Allen Gaels by 7-11
to 3-3. The scoreline then didn’t do justice to Allen Gaels who
were only a point behind at half time. Then we got an avalanche of
goals. What happened on Sunday was the opposite. Allen Gaels got an
avalanche of goals and while we got nearly as many scores as they
did, the 7-7 to 1-12 scoreline did no justice to our efforts. At
half time it was 4-3 to 1-6, only six points in it. It went as far
as nine of a difference and gradually our boys got it back to five.
The crucial event then was the saving of a penalty by the Allen
Gaels goalie and then another couple of goals. No matter how well
you play you cannot contend with such high goal scoring. On another
day it could be our turn but in reality there was nothing between
these teams. Well done also to the team mentors: Ollie Honeyman,
Ronan O’Rourke and Raymond McHugh (See full report of match in

Seniors
Beat Mohill in League
Our senior team and management gave a sigh of relief when the final
whistle went on Sunday morning last. We beat Mohill by 0-15 to 3-5
but it was shocking close in the end. We still cannot be sure of
remaining in Division I but we are certainly a lot closer than we
would have been if we lost, or even drew, last Sunday. This was a
game we should have won well but the tale of 15 scores to 8 is a
better indication of the run of play. We started great and were up
0-7 to no score by the 15th minute. Points came from
David Duignan (2), Sean Murray (3, 1 a free), Wayne McKeon and Shane
Murphy. Mohill got their first point after 18 minutes, from a 45 and
then disaster struck us for the first time. A high ball that
appeared to be going wide was deflected towards the goal, deceived
Philip Farrelly in goals and rolled into the net. Sean Murray got
another point to leave us up by 0-8 to 1-1 at half time. Sean Murray
put us five up and then Mohill got the next two points, then another
soft enough goal to bring them level. We played our best football
then when under pressure and Shane Murphy, Sean Murray from play and
then from a free and Wayne McKeon all got points to put us four
ahead. It was looking good when disaster came our way for the third
time. Another Mohill
goal and then they pointed to level again. David Duignan put us one
up from a free but Mohill weren’t finished yet and leveled again.
With a couple of minutes remaining Seán Murray got one of the most
important scores he will ever get, a point, to put us 0-15 to 3-5
ahead and it ended soon afterwards. We now have one game left,
against Allen Gaels. Overall we played well and were put to the test
by Mohill goals, but survived three setbacks to bounce back each
time.

Lose to Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher
What was at stake was a place in the Semi-finals or the Quarter-finals
and we had to settle for the Quarter-finals. This was a poor game
and we struggled throughout. We got three first half points from
Peter Reynolds, Seán McCartin and a free from Alan Prior. At half
time Glenfarne/Kilty led by 1-4 to 0-3. We started well in the
second half with a goal from Daryl McFarland and a point from Cormac
Ó Suilleabháin to bring us within a point of Glenfarne/Kilty. It
looked as if we could overtake them but a soft goal killed it and
all we got for the rest of the game was a point from Peter Reynolds.
It ended 2-8 to 1-5. We now play Leitrim Gaels in the
semi-final.

16 Girls
The under 16 girls played Fenagh in the Park last Thursday and were
so unlucky to loose by just 2 points. It was a great game of
football by both sides O'Heslins were unlucky with some scores. The
girls never gave up and really gave a 100% but just wasn't meant to
be. We now wait on the result of the Bornacoola game against
Fenagh and we would be hoping for Bornacoola to do us a favour at
this stage. But the under 16 girls had wins over Bornacoola
and Aughawillan.

Underage girls trip to Croke Park
on Sunday to the Ladies All Ireland!
The underage girls had great day out in Croke Park at the Ladies All
Ireland Finals and it was a great experience for them. The
girls really enjoyed themselves and the game between Cork and Dublin
was a brilliant game and the girls were on the edge of their seats
on different occasions. It didn't seem to matter to the
girls who was playing as they supported every team in Croke Park on
Sunday.
The girls themselves said it was a brilliant day out and they
enjoyed all three games. But the one game they talked about
the most was the Cork and Dublin game, as it was just an outstanding
game. Thanks to the girls for making the day so enjoyable.
Thanks also the Brid McGovern, Mary McGovern, Leigh Murphy, Helen

Final. Stewards will be needed for the Intermediate Final on
Saturday. This game is fixed for 5.00 but there may be a game before
it.
Juniors
are promoted to Division 3.
Last
year our first Junior team was relegated to Division 4. On Saturday
last they won promotion back to Division 3 with a devastating first
half performance against Leitrim Gaels in a play-off game. Last week
our seniors were shocked by Annaduff in the first half and ended up
1-10 to 0-1 down at half time. It was the reverse on Saturday with
our juniors as a fancied Leitrim Gaels team were rocked by a
splendid first half performance which left us leading by 3-7 to 0-2
at half time. It could have been more as a couple of gift chances of
goals went wide also. We were on top everywhere. Shane Murphy got an
early goal. Points came from Paul Prior (free), Brian Cafferty and
Ronan O’Rourke and then Anthony McTague finished after a good save
in the Leitrim Gaels goal. Minutes later Shane Murphy was fouled in
the square and Paul Prior made no mistake with a clinical penalty.
Paul pointed a free, Adrian Gallogly narrowly grazed the bar for a
point and Paul Prior finished with two pointed frees. It was 3-7 to
0-2 at the break. It was just as well we led so much because we made
little headway in the second half and were always on the defensive.
Our backs played well and Leitrim Gaels got just three points from
almost constant attacking. We hardly got past half way and got just
two points from Brian Cafferty and James McWeeney. The first half
performance was enough and it ended 3-9 to 0-5.
We are now promoted to Division 3 and the Final for Division
3 honours will be against Kiltubrid.

One of our under 12 players,
Donal Feely, took part in the INTO mini games in Croke Park on
Sunday. It is a great honour for one of our players to be on the
field in Croke Park on All Ireland day. Well done to one of our
outstanding underage players. Last year Ballinamore Boys NS won the
INTO Leitrim Mini sevens and as a result Donal was chosen to
represent Leitrim. Donal is currently midfielder on our very
promising under 12 team.
Our under 12s had a good win
over Fenagh in a very exciting game on Friday evening. This game was
a thriller all through and a credit to both teams. It was very close
early on but good points from Peter Reynolds, Barry McGovern and
Cathal McHugh kept Ballinamore in touch. After fifteen minutes
Ballinamore led by 0-5 to 0-4 and it was anyone’s game. Then Peter
Reynolds did great work before blasting home an unsavable goal.
Minutes later he passed to Barry McGovern who finished another goal
from close range. Daragh Murphy popped up from half back to point
another one and so O’Heslins had a good lead of 2-7 to 0-4 at half
time. After half time Barry McGovern got a point and then Fenagh got
a goal which brought them back into it but not for long as Peter
Reynolds scored another great goal shortly after that. In the latter
stages Niall McGovern got two more points, Peter Reynolds got two
more and Ailís O’Dowd got another and it finished 3-13 to 2-8.
Overall it was great entertainment for the big crowd present. The
team also beat Drumreilly on Monday last and are now in the Final
against Mohill.

Under 12 girls lose final!
Are under 12 girls had a great year but were so unlucky not to have
won the final on Saturday last, it just wasn't our day. The
girls gave their all and played some lovely football throughout the
game and had some lovely scores from play. We have such a young
panel of girls who will still be under 12 next year. It was
great to see some many young girls take an interest in the sport and
in the club this year. We had a total of 5 games this year
winning 4 out of 5 games was achievement in itself.
It was great to see the girls always out at training and was such a
pleasure to train and work with them and for making football so
enjoyable for their mentors. We as mentors are very
proud of each girl and we thank them for their commitment
throughout. A big thank you to all the parents who baked and made
sandwiches for after the final Saturday they were lovely and enjoyed
by all.

Thanks to Brid McGovern, Geraldine Reilly and Ray O'Connor for their
help all year with the underage. Thanks to all the girls’ parents
for supporting them, for dropping them off at training and to games
and for always being on hand to help. A special thanks to each girl
themselves for all their hard work all year and we hope they enjoy
their break. We hope to see all out next year for another enjoyable
year.

place in the final. So please come along and support.

After
the Dublin – Kerry All Ireland Quarter Final people wondered if
Kerry were that good or were Dublin that bad. We were wondering the
same way as we left Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin on Saturday evening in
the most beautiful sunshine we got this summer. Annaduff led by 1-5
to 0-0 after five minutes and at half time by 1-10 to 0-1. It was
hard to credit such a scoreline and while we had some bad wides in
the first half, six in all, Annaduff had eight and some just as bad.
The second half was a bit better and we got 1-4 to their 0-4 but it
was all too little too late. When you remember Manorhamilton beat us
by two points and Carrigallen beat Annaduff by a point and they are
now both in the Co Final, you would have expected a close game. I
somehow think, like Dublin, we hit a serious bad display on this
occasion.

Our
junior s had a good, hard-earned win over Drumreilly in the first
round of the C Championship on Sunday. We had a fruitless first half
with many missed chances and we got just two scores, both from Sean
McCartin, one from play and one a free. Drumreilly got a goal just
before half-time and that was a killer blow which left them leading
by 1-5 to 0-2 at half-time. However the second half was different
and gradually we got points from Adrian Murphy, Alan Prior and
Joseph Murphy. Then the crucial goal came from Alan Prior, who had a
great second half, to put us level. Drumreilly weren’t finished
and points were exchanged but it was level with minutes to go. Then
Shane Moran hit the winning point to finish 1-8 to 1-7. Overall the
second half performance was very good and when you take into account
that Drumreilly were in the final of this competition last year it
looks fairly promising.

We have a big panel of under 12 girls and at this stage each girl
has got a game which was great to see. We are only in a 9aside

venue and once again the services of Ballinamore will be called into
action in the Chao Phraya River basin. Tessa Mc Govern, hailing from
Aghoo Bridge, will be hoping to build on her Asia All Star received
last year, Alan Ryan looking to do one better and win the “A”
competition, last year Alan played a blinder in the final losing
very closely to the all conquering Hong Kong team which had some
notable inter county players and Brendan Wisley bringing up the rear
in the “D” football and hurling competitions.

Ballinamore
minor hurlers had a great win over St Mary’s in the Minor Hurling
Final on Monday evening. It was a sign that winter was near as the
game ended at 8.15 in semi darkness but it didn’t take away from
the achievement of winning two minor titles in a row with almost the
same team as last year. Amazingly there were only two of last
year’s team players: Paul Earley and Brendan Mulvey, who were
overage this year. This is really an outstanding team and the level
of performance from all fifteen was exceptional. Even the two subs,
Shane Flanagan and Dean Creaven added to the score line.
Morgan Quinn pointed some great frees, Seán McWeeney was
unbeatable at centre half, Colm McGirl scored two goals, the first
when it was really needed, Éamon Walsh made some great runs and
played a Captain’s part, Devin Quinn stood out at corner back,
Shane Flanagan scored some great points when he came on and man of
the match was certainly Shane Moran who had an exceptional game all
through. However, one could pick out any of the seventeen that
played. St Mary’s tried hard to give them their due and after
falling ten points down they got it back to three at one stage in
the first half. In the end the Ballinamore lads had more than enough
to spare and it ended 5-17 to 2-6. Well done to the whole panel and
to the mentors Ciaran Maxwell and Kevin O’Connor.

Croke
Park trip
Last
Tuesday, the 25th August, our Under 12 Hurlers went to Croke Park on
the trip of a lifetime. Each
Club team had three games on the sacred sod and we played
Gortletteragh, Ballyvary and Cashel Gaels both from Mayo. We
travelled by Bus with the Gortletteragh Club and had a tour of the
GAA Museum, a tour of the Stadium, a meal and then after dinner, the
highlight of the day, the hurling games. We played three games of
twenty minutes duration, 9 a side with three subs and unlimited
substitutions. All
players got to play a game and the emphasis was on fun and
enjoyment. Connacht Council is to be congratulated for this novel
idea in promoting our national game and all involved thoroughly
enjoyed the experience.
Team
and mentors were Pearce Dolan, Donal Feely, Peter Reynolds, James
Hamill, Aaron McLoughlin, Mark O’Reilly, Darragh Murphy, Ronan
Maxwell, Damien Creaven, Niall McGovern, Oisín McCaffrey and Eoin
McLoughlin. Mentors were Dean Creaven, Paddy O’Connor and Shane

Juniors
Survive in Junior Championship
Our
Juniors had a good win over Kiltubrid in the relegation play-off in
Aughnasheelin on Sunday morning to ensure that they play in the
Junior A Championship next year. With Kiltubrid placed top of the
Division 3 league, this was a significant win for our juniors and
after two bad performances in the Championship proper it was good to
see them doing so well. In reality they should have won this game
more readily as they missed a succession of goal chances in the
second half, at least four that had goal all over them. However, it
must be said that Denis Dolan made a couple of great saves at the
other end, so that evened it up somewhat. We had a good first half
and some excellent points came from Paul prior frees, one from 50
yards out on a wet day was exceptional. Adrian Gallogly, as he has
done before, finished an excellent goal after Paul Prior and Adrian
Smith combined with excellent passes. That gave us a comfortable 1-7
to 0-3 lead at half time. Surprisingly both teams scored just two
points each in the second half, but Paul Prior repeated his first
half feat with a pointed 50, which made all the difference. It
finished 1-9 to 0-5. This team, or the bones of it, have still to
contest the play off for promotion to Division 3 and on Sunday’s
performance they will give it a rattle.

Junior
Ladies
The O'Heslins ladies faced a very strong Dromahair side last Sunday
in Ballinamore in the Championship Semi Final. Sean O'Heslins
opened the scoring and were in control for most of the first half.
The second half saw Dromahair take control and went on to win the
game. But the girls gave a great performance and put in a
great effort as well. The Junior Ladies are now finished for
the year as it has been a long season and a disappointing one at
that. Hard luck to all the girls involved in yesterday
Championship game. Team Panel for 2009: Carol

had a great win over Bornacoola. The girls put in a great

great football been displayed by such a young team. Our under

please come along and support the girls. Team Panel:Aoibheann

Congratulations to the under 12 Community games All Ireland winners
who won recently in Athlone. The Sean O'Heslins Club had a lot
of girls involved with the winning team which was great to see and
well done to there trainers as well.
We wish all the girls heading back to school and college this coming
September the best of luck for the year ahead.
Our
under 16s made it two out of two when they beat Melvin Gaels on
Friday last. After a good start by O’Heslins, Melvin Gaels came
back into it and at half time it was 1-9 to 1-3. At one stage in the
second half it looked as if we would win comfortably but Melvin
Gaels kept coming back and with only minutes left they got a lucky
goal to leave only two points in it. Minutes earlier Jack Bagge made
a great save and only for that we would have been in trouble.
However we held on for a 1-15 to 2-10 win. Stephen McTague
and Brian Beirne got the scores that really counted to ensure
victory. Next game against Allen Gaels this Friday.

There are days when the best team wins and days when the best team loses.
With no disrespect for Glencar/Manorhamilton this was probably an
occasion when the best team lost. For lengthy periods we dominated
the game including the first fifteen minutes when we had most of the
play but fell three to nil down. One of these points was from a
harsh free but we were
poor in attack and should have at least been level at this stage.
Manor had the best of the rest of this half and deservedly led by
0-7 to 0-3 at half time with David Duignan getting all of our
scores, Some terrible
fumbling gave Glencar/ Manorhamilton two easy points to put them six
up early on and then we started to play in earnest. Sean Murray
pointed a free and then the penalty gave us the breakthrough we
needed. Wayne McKeon finished to the net after the goalie made a
great save. Sean Murray got two points, our only scores in the
remainder of the half but it is probably the miss he will remember
most. A gift chance of
a goal with minutes remaining. It was cruel hard luck but Seán was
hobbling with an injury from some time before. In the first half
nobody played well and in the last twenty minutes everyone played
well. That is the way it goes, but really we deserved a draw at
least. We are so unlucky in quarter finals over the past few years.

In
the first game in the 13 a side Championship against Dromahair,
Ballinamore dominated for most of the game. A number of good saves
by Jack Bagge in goals, a good defence and Mark McGrory and John
Fanning at midfield fought hard for possession which provided the
forwards with many scoring chances, most of which they converted.
Abdul Ahmed was top scorer with 1-1. Final score Ballinamore 1-15

The
Ballinamore Area Girls Under 12 football team had a dramatic success
at the All Ireland Community Games in Athlone on Saturday. The girls
beat Monasterevin from Kildare in the semi-final by 3-4 to 1-8 and
in the final they beat Lurgan of Cavan by 2-5 to 2-1. This was an
amazing success for the girls from Ballinamore, Aughawillan,
Drumreilly and Fenagh. No less than eight of the 18 strong panel are
from Ballinamore: Róisín McHugh, Cáit Connaughton, Eilís
O’Dowd, Emma McGovern, Rachel Creamer, Francis Farry, Kate

are: Rebecca Rowley, Aileen Maguire, Carla

There

Sunday. At 4.30 the Intermediate quarter final between Gortletteragh
and St Mary’s will be followed at 6.00 by the senior quarter final
between Mohill and Bornacoola. Stewards will be needed.
Our
first junior team made their exit from the championship when they
lost to Mohill on Saturday evening. A bad first half was the big
problem. Mohill got two goals while we missed a couple of goal
chances and as a result we were behind by 2-7 to 0-4 at half time.
Brian Cafferty, Diarmuid Keegan, James McWeeney and Paul Prior got
our points. The second half was a whole lot better and we scored
seven points to Mohill’s three but the closest we got was within
four points. Overall it was a disappointing Championship as we are
in joint second place in the corresponding Division 3 League.
However, Mohill are a Division 2 team so that probably explains the
difference. We now play in the relegation play-off along with
Kiltubrid, Melvin Gaels and Drumkeerin

We
are in the quarter final of the Senor Championship after a good win
over Drumreilly on Saturday. It was an exciting close game and
wasn’t won until the final whistle. As one would expect,
Drumreilly made it difficult all the way. However, we had a good
first half and got some great points from Sean Murray, Paul
McLoughlin, Jim McTague, David Duignan and Anton Arandelovic.
Anton’s final point from a free fifty yards out was a great lift
but Drumreilly got a major boost with a goal just before half-time.
Drumreilly led by 1-6 to 0-8 at the break. It was significant that
we had just two wides in that first half. Drumreilly got the first
two points of the second half but that was when we really came to
life with seven points in succession from Sean Murray (free), David Duignan, Sean Murray (free), Anthony McTague,
Anton Arandelovic, Anthony McTague again and Wayne McKeon. We were
then four points up and Drumreilly needed to score five to deny us a
place in the next round. Drumreilly scored three to leave us one
ahead but that was as close as they came. Ciaran Murray and Sean
Murray got our final points and it ended 0-17 to 1-12.
Overall
this was a significant victory for O’Heslins as we havn’t beaten
Drumreilly for some years. Back in 2001 we were in cruel hard luck
in the famous three-game sequence when we should have won on two
occasions and then were well beaten in the third game. Seventeen
points, eleven from play, was a good return with just six wides in
the hour. Wayne McKeon was in hard luck also to rock the crossbar
early in the first half. Now it is on to the quarter final against
Glencar Manor.

We
play Drumreilly on Saturday in Cloone at 5.45. We urge our
supporters to be there.
Thankfully the Championship
isn’t over the first day any longer and while we didn’t win, our
performance against Kiltubrid was good enough to deserve another
outing which will come next week. The final scoreline of 1-10 to 1-7
for Kiltubrid was a fair reflection of the overall game, but the
accuracy of the Kiltubrid forwards was exceptional and their goal
was a case of snapping up a half chance and taking it. That apart,
we were every bit as good as Kiltubrid in general play and it was an
encouraging performance. The first half was low scoring and it ended
1-4 to 1-2 for Kiltubrid. Wayne McKeon and Sean Murray getting our
points and Wayne McKeon scoring from the penalty. The second half
was very close with Kiltubrid scoring six to our five, with three
from Anton Arandelovic, one from Sean Murray and the score of the
championship a point from Wayne McKeon with a series of sidesteps
you seldom see. Now it is back to Cloone on Saturday where we face
Drumreilly.
Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Johnny McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin, Matthew Murphy, Liam Ferguson, Shane Ferguson, Wayne McKeon (1-2 1pen), Anton Arandelovic (0-3), Paul McLoughlin, Anthony McTague, David Duignan, Ronan O’Rourke, Jim McTague, Ciaran Murray, Sean Murray (0-2). Subs: Philip Murphy for J McWeeney, Shane Murphy for Ronan O’Rourke.
Brilliant for 10 minutes,
terrible for 50 minutes. That sums up our performance in the first
round of the Junior A Championship. For the past couple of years we
have played well in the Junior Championship. Last year we lost with
the last kick of the game to Allen Gaels, who subsequently won the
Championship. On Sunday we were facing Carrigallen who play in
Division 5 of the League while we are in Division 4. Admittedly,
Carrigallen topped Division 5 but lost the final to Aughnasheelin.
However, we are in contention still for promotion to Division 3. In
the first ten minutes we confirmed our position as favourites with
points from Paul Prior, a fisted goal from Adrian Gallogly and
points by Brian Cafferty and Shane McWeeney to leave us 1-3 to 0-0
up after not more than five minutes. Carrigallen got their first
score but Paul Prior got a great point from play and another from a
free and we were seven points up. From that on we disappeared and
Carrigallen scored 1-5 to our two points from James McWeeney and two
frees from Paul Prior. It
was 1-8 to 1-6 in our favour at half time.
Carrigallen got the first
two points to level but we seemed to have steadied when Shane
McWeeney and Paul Prior pointed frees, Carrigallen got another
before James McWeeney pointed again to leave us two up, at 1-11 to
1-9. From that on Carrigallen took over and got six points to one
for us from Diarmuid Keegan. It finished 1-15 to 1-12. A second
three-point defeat in two days, but in this case we would have been
very much the favourites. The loss of Brian Cafferty early on
didn’t help as he was playing exceptionally well, but it is
difficult to find excuses in a game where we seemed to be coasting.
Foireann: Denis Dolan, Joe

championship victories, underage scene, ladies football, hurling, scór
etc. If you havn’t seen it yet you are really missing a wonderful
account of a great club. It also includes interviews with many of
the greats of Sean O’Heslins from many generations. Some of those
interviewed are now gone “ar shlí na firinne” but are not
forgotten. People like Tommy McGoldrick, Eddie Matt Turbitt, Thomas
Galligan and Fr Dan Gallogly. There are now a limited number left
and they are for sale in Philip Murphy’s, Kavanagh’s, Beirne’s
Filling Station, Smyths Siopa Bronntanas, Smyth’s Siopa Ól and

Gaels lost to St Mary’s last week. Bye this week.
The under 14 girls played St
Joseph’s on Monday evening last in the under 14 league semi final
and were very unlucky to lose. The girls worked very hard in
the first half and made things difficult for St Joseph’s and at
half time it was Sean O'Heslins 0-1 to St Joseph's 0-4. It was
all to play for in the second half and could have been anyone’s
game. The second half saw Sean O'Heslins taking control and
played some lovely football. St Joseph's then took control and
went on to win the game. We were down some players and we had
no subs but the girls gave a 100% and should be very proud of
themselves. The under 14s season has come to an end and each
girl played great football throughout the season and I wish to thank
each and every player for there commitment.

thank you to Brid McGovern and Geraldine Reilly for there input

supported the girls as well.

Gaels beat Glencar/Manorhamilton last week by two points and lost to
St Manachan’s on Monday by 3-13 to 1-10.
Our
under 14s made a great comeback after a bad start to beat Glencar
Manorhamilton by 6-9 to 1-9 last week.
We were beaten by 1-15 to
1-9 but, at very least, it need not have been so big a margin. The
game was lost in the first half when we hit a succession of wides
while Carrick took every chance they got. At half time St Mary’s
led by 0-9 to 0-4 but the wides tally was Sean O’Heslins nine to
St Mary’s two. That told its own story. We dominated the game for
at least twenty minutes but could not get the scores. Adrian Smith
was in cruel hard luck for a goal when it went inches from the post.
Seán Murray, Adrian Smith and Wayne McKeon got points from play
while Wayne pointed one also for our total in the first half.
We fared better in the
second half and when Wayne McKeon goaled from the penalty after Jim
McTague was heavily fouled in the square it left four points in it.
It remained close until St Mary’s got a goal near the end of the
game. Overall, missed chances in the first half beat us and while St
Mary’s always seemed to have the edge we never gave up trying.
Foireann: Philip Farrelly,

Arandelovic, Ciaran Murray, Jim McTague, David Duignan (0-1f),
Anthony McTague, Shane Murphy (0-1), Adrian Smith (0-1), Sean Murray
(0-1f). Subs: Paul McLoughlin for A smith, David Leyden for J
McTague, Shane McWeeney for S Murphy.
Our
juniors in Division 5 drew with Mohill on Friday evening at 0-10
apiece. We were out of this game in the first half and were behind
by 0-7 to 0-2 at half time. However it must be said there were three
good saves, two by the Mohill goalie and one by a back, which had
goal written all over them. However the second half was better and
we got some great points from Shane McWeeney, David Leyden, Peter
Dolan and Peter Reynolds and we leveled it before the finish.

We
got a walk-over from Ballinaglera on Sunday, something we would
rather do without, but it does mean we are in joint second place
with Leitrim Gaels and because both teams received walk-overs in the
course of the League we must now play-off for a place in the final
against Kiltubrid.
Minor
Hurling:
Our minor hurlers kicked of their championship campaign against St. Mary’s in terrible conditions last Sunday evening. With a lot of our lads missing due to football commitments, we lost on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-4 but we played very well and could have snatched victory at the end.
Team:
David O Connell, Devin
Quinn, Donal Flynn, Seamus Donnelly, James Gallagher
(0-1), Éamon Walsh (capt), Shane Moran (1-3), Shane
McWeeney, Mark McGrory, David Gallagher.

Ballinamore
men’s sons in Leinster Minor Hurling and Minor Football finals.
It was an extraordinary coincidence that on two successive Sundays, in both the Leinster Minor Hurling and Minor Football Finals; sons of Ballinamore men were playing in each. On last Sunday week, Wexford minor hurlers lost to Kilkenny but put in a good performance. Corner forward on the Wexford team was Liam Óg McGovern, son of Liam McGovern formerly of Aghoo. Wexford will still be in contention as there is a back-door for provincial finalists. Then on Sunday last Kildare minors drew with Dublin in the Leinster Minor Football Final and corner forward on the Kildare team was Cian Reynolds, son of Colm Reynolds formerly of Edentenny. Both Liam McGovern and Colm Reynolds played football with Seán O’Heslins. Best wishes to both lads, as both are still in contention in their respective competitions.

Seniors win over Gortletteragh
It was hard to believe that
Gortletteragh are at the bottom of Division 1. Up to Sunday we had
played six, won two, drew one and lost three. Against Kiltubrid and
Glencar/Manorhamilton we could have won, against Melvin Gaels we
should have won, and against Drumreilly we probably did win although
the result was a draw. However, on Sunday last we were very lucky to
win as Gortletteragh looked the best team we met so far in the seven
games. Only for two strokes of brilliance, one from Shane McWeeney
and the other from Liam Ferguson, both yielding goals, we would not
have won and we could not have complained. The first half was poor
and it was 0-2 apiece with about two minutes left in the first half.
Anthony McTague and Sean Murray got our points. Sean Murray got two
points in the last two minutes, one from a free and we led 0-4 to
0-2 at half time, a lead we hardly deserved.
The second half was much
better from both sides. Within two minutes of the restart
Gortletteragh levelled with two points, then Shane McWeeney who had
just come in as a sub, did a wonderful piece of sidestepping to
score a great goal and we were three up. Gortletteragh dominated
from there and got eight points while we got just two: from Shane
Murphy and Seán Murray from a free. Two glorious goal chances fell
to Gortletteragh, Philip Farrelly made a brilliant save from one and
the other went inches wide. If one of these had gone in we could be
fighting a relegation battle from now on. With minutes left, the
ball was in around the Gortletteragh square and Liam Ferguson got
possession and in a crowded goalmouth he somehow managed to find a
gap, and scored a goal he will remember for a long time. Cúl
iontach. It was a
critical score for both us and Gortletteragh, in different ways.
Liam Ferguson had a great game throughout and he, along with Matthew
Murphy, were our stars throughout the game on a day when the backs
played well and the forwards didn’t. The two points were ours and
a significant shift up
the League table. It ended 2-6 to 0-11.
Foireann: Philip Farrelly,
John McWeeney. Patrick McLoughlin, Matthew Murphy, Liam Ferguson
(1-0), Shane Ferguson, Wayne McKeon, Anton Arandelovic, Adrian
Smith, Ronan O’Rourke, David Duignan, Anthony McTague (0-1), Shane

McWeeney (1-0) for R O’Rourke, Jim McTague for S Murphy, James
McWeeney for A Smith.
Juniors
beat St Mary’s in Division 4.
Our junior A team are still
in the running for promotion after a big win over St Mary’s on
Friday night. They have one game to play against, against
Ballinaglera, and, if they win that, they are in joint second place
with Leitrim Gaels. However, that’s a story for another day. On
Friday they were very much on top from the start but struggled to
get scores in the first half. At half time it was 0-5 to 0-2 in our
favour with points from Anthony McTague, Diarmuid Keegan, Shane
Murphy, Gordon Hughes and Paul Prior (free).
St Mary’s didn’t score in the second half but it took
time for our scores to come. However, come they did, from Anthony
McTague, three from Paul Prior (two frees) and one from Shane
McWeeney. Then Anthony McTague scored a good goal to really finish
it. Neil Hughes made a big impact in attack when he came on and
scored two points and James McWeeney playing his first game in a
long time got a point when he came on. Fáilte ar ais a Shéamais!
It ended 1-13 to 0-2.
Foireann: Philip Farrelly,
Kevin O’Connor, Gavin Brennan, Matthew Murphy, Joe McTague, Shane
Ferguson, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Adrian Smith, David Leyden,
Gordon Hughes (0-1), Paul Prior (0-4 2f), Anthony McTague (1-2),
Shane McWeeney 0-1), Diarmuid Keegan (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-1).
Subs: Ronan O’Rourke for G Hughes, Neill Hughes (0-2) for S
McWeeney, James McWeeney (0-1) for S Murphy and Stephen Beirne for D
Keegan.
If our seniors were lucky to
beat Gortletteragh, the opposite was the case for our Juniors on
Sunday. We were badly short, with just the bare fifteen for this
match. However, they played quite well and were 5 points up at one
stage, but Gortletteragh finished better and won by 2-12 to 1-16.
Foireann: Denis Dolan,

(0-1f), Tommy McCormack (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-4), Daryl
McFarland (1-0).

The under 14 girls played home to
Mohill last Monday evening and it was a great game of football from
both sides. We were ahead for most of the game but in the second
half the Mohill girls took control and held on to win. It was
an important game for the Mohill side but our girls have already
made it through to the semi final stages of the under 14 league.
The girls have a big task ahead of them when they face St Joseph's
in the Semi Final. A date, time and Venue is yet to be decided.

7.00 in Mohill. On Friday the under 14s play Dromahair in Dromahair
at 7.00
In
a very competitive game we just shaded it in Dromahair on Sunday. On
a wet day in difficult conditions, it was very competitive and well
contested the value of those Shield games. We started well and were
0-4 to 0-1 up early on with points from Jim McTague, Anton
Arandelovic and two from Seán Murray, one a free. Then Dromahair
dominated and it was level at half time, (0-5) each, with one other
point coming from Seán Murray. We were luck enough to be level as
Denis Dolan made a great save late in the half. While David Duignan
got our first score of the second half, Dromahair got the next three
and were two ahead by two points. As the rain fell in bucket fulls,
we seemed to do best in the conditions and we got five points
without any from Dromahair in the final ten minutes. David Duignan
got two; one from a free, Adrian, Smith, Seán Murray and Brian
Cafferty got the others with Brian’s being an exceptional one. It
ended 0-11 to 0-8. We have one game to play in the shield, against
Ballinaglera.
Foireann:

Anthony McTague, Shane Murphy, Ciaran Murray, Seán Murray (0-4 1f).
Sub Brian Cafferty (0-1) for Jim McTague.
Our
Juniors had a good win over Dromahair, who were two points ahead of
us on the Division 4 table going into Friday’s game. It was a
close match and hard-won. At half-time it was level pegging at 0-5
apiece. In the second half Dromahair got on top and got a goal and a
point to lead by 4 at one stage. Two great saves from Denis Dolan in
quick succession saved us from being a beaten team at this stage.
Then some excellent points from Shane Murphy, Paul Prior, Ronan
O’Rourke and Adrian Gallogly gradually got us into the lead. Once
we got our noses ahead Paul Prior and Shane Murphy finished a few
excellent points to leave it 0-15 to 1-8 at the end. We have two
games left to play in this division and could yet figure in a
play-off, depending on other results. Ironically, Kiltubrid top the
Division and are already in the final and the only game the lost was
to Seán O’Heslins. The wonder of the division is how did we lose
to Aughavas.
Foireann:

Our
under 14s made had a losing start to their championship campaign
after winning the Division 1 League. This was a game where soft
goals were the order of the day, but it was a wet evening with a
slippery ball and that was a contributory factor. The Ballinamore
lads started the game poorly and were eight points behind at one
stage. However they staged a good recovery only to be hit by a soft
goal again. At half time it was 2-4 to 0-6 in favour of Annaduff. In
the second half Billy Williams hit a goal to give the Ballinamore
lads renewed hope and with a point from Niall McGovern there was
only one point in it. It was looking good at this stage but then
there were a couple of missed frees, indeed throughout the hour a
lot of chances were missed. Annaduff got two goals at this stage,
one a good one and one of the soft variety, and that really finished
O’Heslins. It ended 4-9 to 2-8. Niall McGovern was the star of the
O’Heslins side coring 1-2 from half back. The score didn’t do
justice to O’Heslins and on another day the result could be
different.
Foireann:
Fergal Curran, Brian Leyden, Anthony Maguire, Evan Moran King, Cian
McHugh, Brian Banks, Niall McGovern (1-2), Dean McGovern, Conor
Moran, Patrick Connaughton, Billy Williams (1-1), Donal feely, Peter

Conor Maxwell, Mark O’Reilly, Darragh Murphy.
Oughteragh
Gaels played out a low-scoring draw on Thursday night in
Aughawillan. It was a very wet evening, which ruined the game and
probably contributed to the low scoring. At half time it was 0-2
apiece with Oughteragh Gaels getting two points from frees by Shane
McWeeney and Shane Moran. The second half went a long way without a
score before Conor McTague got our only point from play during the
hour. Then Garadice Gaels got two points to lead by one. With little
time remaining Shane Moran pointed a free to level the match at 0-4
apiece. There were a lot of missed chances with Garadice Gaels
missing the most but a draw was a satisfactory result in what was a
poor game. Two years ago Drumreilly won the under 16 championship so
this was a good result for Oughteragh Gaels.
Foireann:
Colm McGirl (A), John Fanning (B), Sean McWeeney (A), Joe Earley

Under
14 girls
The under 14 girls have reached the semi final of the under 14
league for the first time ever. They have won against teams
such as Glenfarne, Manorhamilton, Carrick and drawing to
Cloone and just one defeat to St Joseph’s who we play this
Thursday 9th July in the semi final. The girls have given a great
display of football in every game they have played so far. We
have a very committed underage team this year and they hope to go
the whole way in this competition and we need all the support we can
get to help the girls go that bit further.
Please check fixture for game Thursday for time & venue and
please come along and support the girls.

Under 12 Girls
Our under 12s have played a total of 2 games to-date and won
both games by beating Dromahair and Annaduff. Both games had a lot
of high scoring for just 40 minutes of football. We have a
great under 12 girls team and they have also given great
displays of football. This young team have a lot of potential and
will soon be stars for the future. Kate Reynolds played in
goals for the first 2 games and gave a great display with some
great saves and also with her fine kick outs which found
her own team mates at all times which is important and she
plays an important role within the team.
We have a great back line made up by Lisa McGuire, Cait Connaughton,
Leighann Flynn who have all shown great display of defending and
covering their back line very well. In midfield we have both
Eilish O'Dowd and Róisín McHugh who both shown great
leadership there and work very well together. Then in the
forward line we have Emma McGovern who will be a footballer to
watch out for in the future who has great skill both on and off the
ball and has a great foot for scoring. Also in the forward
line you have Francis Farry who never gives up and will keep
going right through to the end and has great determination. Grace
Wrynn also played a great game and shows great determination as
well. We also had fine displays of football by Margo who
has just joined us this year who came from France
and is picking up the Gaelic football very well and enjoys the
sport. Niamh McGourty and Leah Mullaney both played some
lovely football and also have a bright future in football.
The last 3 games in
the under 12s competition are all home games for Sean O'Heslins so
please check fixture and come along and support this young and
talent team.
Junior Ladies
The Junior Ladies played their last game of the League on Sunday
away to Annaduff which turned out to be a great game of football by
both sides. Annaduff started off the better team in the first
half and led by 4 pts at half time. The second half turned out
to be a great display by both teams again and it saw
Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins take the lead on a few occasions but
were just unlucky to loose out by 2pts but it was a game, which
could of went either way. Well done to Annaduff and we wish them the
best in the league.

We had some wins and some defeats in the league but overall we
showed some great display of football. We will now concentrate
hard on the championship and we hope we can succeed in that.
Please keep an eye out in the local paper and club notes for time
& venue for Championship game and we hope we will get as many
people out to support us. Thanks to everyone who have travel both
home and away to support us so far and we hope you continue to
support us throughout the championship. The under 16s and Minor have
yet to start up so there will be a lot more football still to
be played.

Serious
Fundraising Begins.
Work
on the Park is now complete and the big job now is to pay for it. A
massive task now confronts club officers, members and supporters.
Serious fundraising is now only beginning. The Finance Committee is
now concentrating on extending the scheme whereby people pledge
€10 a month by standing order to the club.
For
a number of years people have been giving €10 a month to the club
and some have been contributing €20 or more. We would like to
thank all of those contributors for keeping up the bank deductions.
We are now looking for 100 new people to contribute €10 a month.
We need the income badly as the cost of running the club, plus the
cost of bank repayments is enormous. We will be contacting people
over the next few days, but we would welcome hearing from people who
would like to contribute. Ballinamore has the finest GAA facilities
in the County and far beyond. Please help us pay for them now.

Cian Reynolds in Leinster Final
A few weeks ago we mentioned that Cian Reynolds, a son of Colm Reynolds from Edentenny was on the Kildare minor team this year. Well, Kildare have now progressed to the Leinster Final where they will play Dublin,. Last weekend Kildare beat Meath by a point. Cian was corner forward and scored a point. Well done Cian.

On
next Friday 26th June the 2008 Under 21 Championship medals
will be presented to the Oughteragh Gaels team by Tyrone Senior
Manager Mickey Harte at 8pm in the Commercial Hotel. Sam
Maguire will also be in attendance. As the 2009 Minor
Championship begins on Wednesday 1st July with an away game to
Garadice Gaels this should be a good night for all concerned with
Oughteragh Gaels. This will be a big occasion and all are
welcome.
The Boys school had a
dramatic win in the Schools Final last Wednesday. It was an amazing
game with Mohill ahead for most of the match and deservedly so.
Indeed the Ballinamore lads, for once, didn’t play well at all
until fortune favoured them in the final minutes. It was 1-3 to 0-2
at half time with the breeze behind Ballinamore for the second half.
However, it was Mohill who dominated and they led by six points with
five minutes to go. Then two dramatic goals and a point came out of
the blue. Peter Reynolds got the first goal and Dean McGovern got
the second one. It
was an extraordinary finish and one the boys will never forget. One
had to have sympathy for the Mohill lads who were almost there, but
five minutes changed all. Well done to both teams for providing such
drama.

Shield
A game against Dromahair on Sunday at 1.30 in Dromahair. Followed by
Division 4 against Dromahair at 3.00.
Our seniors lost heavily to Bornacoola on Friday night. We were short a
lot of players but it was still a bad display and out of character
with all of our senior games so far this year. We were down 1-10 to
0-6 at half time and while things did improve a bit in the second
half it ended 2-14 to 0-10.
Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Philip Murphy, Paul McLoughlin, Matthew
Murphy, Anthony McTague, Shane Ferguson, Kevin O’Connor, Wayne
McKeon (0-2f), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), David Leyden (0-1), Ronan
O’Rourke (0-2), Conor McTague (0-1), Brian Cafferty (0-2), Adrian
Smith, Shane Murphy (0-1). Subs used: Gordon Hughes, Seán McCartin
Our
Junior A team had a good win over Melvin Gaels on Saturday. It was a
close game all the way with very little between the teams for most
of the game. In the second half we had a few chances to go that bit
extra in front, but Anthony McTague was inches wide and another
chance hit the crossbar. Then with four minutes left David Leyden
came up from corner back to finish a good goal which killed off the
Melvin Gaels challenge. It finished 1-10 to 0-7.
Foireann:
Denis Dolan, David Leyden (1-0), Gavin Brennan, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin,
Niall Hughes, Shane Ferguson, Philip Murphy, Adrian Smith, Brian
Cafferty (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke (0-1), Paul Prior (0-1), Anthony
McTague (0-2), Shane Murphy, Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Shane McWeeney
(0-4). Subs: Conor McTague for R O’Rourke, Diarmuid Keegan for A
Gallogly.
Our
Junior B team had a good win over Kiltubrid, a team that were above
them in this division. Two punched goals, one in each half were
crucial in this win, which was comprehensive in the finish. Adrian
Gallogly punched a goal from the edge of the square when the game
was very close in the first half. As a result we led by 1-8 to 0-7
at half time. We were struggling to get
further ahead in the second half, but two wonderful pointed
50s from Paul Prior within a minute of each other gave us a great
lift. Diarmuid Keegan finished it with a great punched goal. It
ended 2-17 to 0-9. Good to see Peter Dolan back and his first game
in well over a year. He got three good points. Good points also came
from Paul Prior, Diarmuid Keegan and Seán McCartin.
Foireann:

Our
U14's played a challenge on Sunday evening last against Drumreilly
in the Park. Despite losing the game it was an important part
of our preparations for the U14 Championship which begins on
Friday 3rd July. We hope the Drumreilly player who sustained
an injury during the match makes a speedy recovery.
The
second round of the U12 blitz will be on Monday 29th June away to
Dromahair at 7pm.
The club history on DVD has been the talk of the town since it was launched at the opening of the pitch. It is an outstanding production and is a must for anyone interested in the club. It would also be a great present for anyone living away from the club area. Copies are available in Philip Murphy’s, Smyths Siopa Bronntanas, Beirne’s Filling station, Kavanagh’s Shop, Priors Pub, Smyths Siopa Ól and Genealogy centre.

Our
seniors played out a thrilling draw with Drumreilly on Sunday last.
Despite a bad start when we conceded a goal within 30 seconds, we
came back to level by half time at 0-9 to 1-6. Twice in the second
half we went two points ahead and indeed may have gone three points
ahead. The big talking point after the game was one disputed point
to Ballinamore which was disallowed although the general
consensus was that it was a point. That would effectively have won
the game for us. However a draw was a good result given that we were
missing so many players through injury. There were some outstanding
displays and indeed everyone played their part.
We
got exceptional scores from Anton Arandelovic, Sean Murray and Ronan
O’Rourke in particular and sixteen points, with only three from frees, was a good return. The final score was O’Heslins
0-16 Drumreilly 1-13.
Foireann:

Sean Murray (0-4). Subs: Kevin O’Connor for A McTague, Shane
McWeeney (0-1) for S Murphy.
There
are times when the best team loses and this was one of them. The
score line often tells a tale and 0-11 to 3-3 tells at least half
the story. However, all three goals for Drumreilly were equally
fortunate or unfortunate depending on which side you come from.
Misfortune struck goalie Michael Dolan for two of them and a
collision between two players led to the other. However, it took a
Drumreilly player to be in the right place each time but really they
were gifts. It must be said that Michael had made a great save
earlier in the second half. At half time it was 0-5 to 0-2 in our
favour. With about ten minutes left it was 0-9 to 0-2 and we were
coasting. Then disaster struck, not once but three times. It was too
late to recover. We had been playing well and all of our eleven
points came from play. Joe McTague, playing at left half back had an
exceptional game and it isn’t often you see a half back scoring
three points from play. Neil Hughes on the other wing got a great
point too.
Foireann:

connections with Celbridge, Co Kildare.
Among
the people who attended the DVD launch in Priors recently was
Michael McNiffe, formerly from Church St, who now resides in
Celbridge Co Kildare where he is involved with the local GAA club.
We were delighted to hear that Michael manages the Celbridge Ladies
U-14 Football team. Kildare are hosting Football Feile this
year and Celbridge are hosting teams from Cavan, Sligo and Wexford.
Michael’s daughter,
Sarah, plays both
Ladies Football and Camogie with Celbridge
She is Captain of Celbridge Ladies U-14 Team who were beaten in
county final this year. She also plays on Ladies U-16 Football team,
Full forward or Goalkeeper and this team won this year’s
county final. She also
plays camogie at club level for U-14 and U-16 teams and they won
both county finals. This year Sarah has played on three Kildare
County teams. She was Full Forward on Kildare Ladies U-14 Football
Team, beaten by Meath in Leinster Semi-final.
Sarah also plays on Kildare Camogie U-14 Team
beaten by Westmeath in Leinster Semi-Final and she played in
Goals for Kildare Camogie U-16 Team ( beaten by Wexford in Leinster
Semi-final ). Well done Sarah and good to see another former
Cannaboe man involved in the GAA elsewhere.
We
got great help in the weeks up to the opening of our new pitch and
facilities at Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin. Now that the new complex is
open and functioning the next thing is to keep it clean and tidy. We
need ladies to help with cleaning the inside rooms, dressingrooms,
etc on a regular basis. If we have a team of helpers it will ease
the load. Please contact Brid Sullivan if you are willing to help.

On Sat eve last we played Aughavas in a Div 4 match in Aughavas with a depleted squad and despite the fact that the opposition had a number of Senior Championship medal winners in their team we only lost by 2 points. Paul Prior was on fine form with his placed balls kicking three 45`s and scoring a penalty and Philip Farrelly had a rare foray out field partnering Adrian Smith in midfield. Final Score Aughavas 0-14 Ballinamore Sean O`Heslins 1-9 Team and Scorers: Denis Dolan, Fred Walsh, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Shane Murphy, Shane Ferguson, Philip Murphy, Philip Farrelly, Adrian Smith(0-1), Adrian Murphy, Paul Prior(1-4), Shane McWeeney(0-2), Tommy McCormack, Peter Reynolds(0-1), Sean McCartin(0-1). Sub Daryl McFarland for T. McCormack.
On Sun morning we took
the field again at home against Allen Gaels with just 15 players on
duty and managed to snatch a draw at the death with a last minute
goal from Adrian Murphy. Paul Prior was on target again from the 45
mark scoring a goal this time. Joe Murphy sustained an ankle injury
and had to be replaced by Eamon Walsh. Score Ballinamore Sean

It
was a day to savour as our wonderful new Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin
was officially opened on Sunday by Uachtarán, CLCG, Christy Cooney.
The whole weekend went clockwork and, fortunately the weather was
good too. There were great crowds on both Saturday and Sunday and we
are grateful to the neighbouring clubs who took part and the other
underage teams as well. Everybody was excited about the wonderful
developments at Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin and it is a great credit
to the current officers under Cathaoirleach Adrian MacGabhann and
the Chairman of the Park Development Committee, Tom Burns, in
particular who have worked for years to bring this job to
completion.
The
wonder of the past few weeks was the number of willing people who
just turned up each evening to offer their help. On Friday night
last there were over eighty people there working at a variety of
jobs. Then there were some people who were there everyday for the
past few weeks. The club is forever grateful to them. The Fear a Tí
for the weekend, Tomás O Moráin, who is also Chairman of the
Finance Committee, also did a wonderful job both on Saturday night
and on Sunday. In charge of catering, Anne Shanley, and her team of
helpers also did trojan work to feed the hundreds of people who had
to get teas and Brian Breen who was in charge of the outdoor
catering. Raymond McHugh had a busy time in charge of the shop.
PJ and Marge McLoughlin also controlled the ticket selling
for the half-time draw which was also a great success. Really it
would be impossible to thank everybody, ach míle buíochas do gach
duine, idir óg agus níos sine, a chabhraigh linn.
There are some photographs of the weekends activities under Pictures/Pictiuiri then Pitch/An Phairc and People/Daoine
Forty-two people completed the cycle from Dromod to Ballinamore on
Saturday. This was a great turn-out considering the wet morning. It
was also a very successful fundraiser.
Well done to Brid Sullivan who was the originator and main
organiser of the event. The special prize for cycling the route and
having the sponsorship returned before Sunday was won by Ollie
Honeyman. Thank you to all who sponsored the cyclists, people who
loaned bicycles, Cyril Smith who transported them, the pit stop team
Padraig McKeon and Patrick McLoughlin and Paddy O Connor for health
and safety. If you havn’t returned your sponsorship money
try to do so by next week or the text messages will be
arriving again.
The
DVD history is providing great entertainment, as people are
fascinated at the range of material available on the history of the
club. It is on sale in the following outlets: Murphy’s Newsagents,
Smyths Siopa Bronntanas, Kavanagh’s, Smyth’s Siopa Ól, Priors,
Seamus Beirne Edentenny and Genealogy Centre. The DVD costs €25
and €30 by post. If you wish to obtain a copy by post please send

The inaugural Thomas
Galligan Memorial Tournament provided great entertainment. Seán
O’Heslins beat St Caillins in the first game and then beat
Aughnasheelin in the Semi-Final. Aughawillan beat Drumreilly in the
other semi-final. Seán O’Heslins beat Aughawillan by 2-6 to 1-5
in the Final. The team we had on duty in the final was: Philip
Farrelly, Philip Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, Jim
McTague, Shane Ferguson, John McWeeney, Ciaran Murray, Paul
McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty, Wayne McKeon, David Duignan, Ronan
O’Rourke, Anton Arandelovic, Sean Murray. Subs: Shane Murphy, Joe
Murphy, Shane McWeeney. The Thomas Galligan Trophy was presented to
captain, Johnny McWeeney by Betty Galligan on behalf of the Galligan
Family.

One
of the greatest occasions in the history of the club is upon us. On
Saturday and Sunday next we celebrate 120 years of the GAA in
Ballinamore and Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Christy Cooney,
will be here on Sunday to officially open the new Páirc Sheáin Uí
Eislin. There will be a whole series of games for all age groups
throughout Saturday and Sunday, details below.
The big starting event on Saturday is the sponsored cycle from Dromod to
Ballinamore. About 40 people will be cycling the route on Saturday.
The starting point is the Bornacoola football pitch in Dromod, but
is up to each individual what time they want to start. It is planned
to have all cyclists finishing together in Ballinamore at 3.00pm
where Christy Cooney will be on hand at Páirc Uí Eislin to present
certificates to all who complete the course. The finishing time is
therefore more important than the starting time. In order to have
everyone finishing roughly at the same time we are asking those who
think they need longer than average to start earlier. The route
should take about an hour and a half for the person who has some
practice done, so a starting time of 1.30 should be sufficient. Some
will be faster than that and some will be slower. If the weather is
bad or windy it will take longer. If you think you need longer
please go to Dromod earlier and start earlier. We are asking
everyone to stop when they reach the Community Centre in Ballinamore
so that the whole group will finish the rest of the route through
the town together. All sponsorship must be returned to Brid Sullivan
by Friday evening.
The
big event on Saturday night is the launch of the DVD which will take
place in Priors Lounge at 9.30. Uachtarán Christy Cooney will
perform the Launch. Everybody is welcome to come. The DVD promises
to be of great interest to anyone with an interest in the town and
club. Indeed, it is a social history of Ballinamore for the past 120
years. It deals with all aspects of the club: Football, Hurling,
Ladies Football, Scór, Officers, The Park, Underage football,
Schools etc. It features clips from games of the past, photographs,
and interviews with many people, and will be a truly great record of
the club’s history. It will have two and a half hours of wonderful
memories and is a must for all to see and hear. The DVD will be on
sale at the launch and will be on sale on Sunday in the following
outlets: Murphy’s Newsagents, Smyths Siopa Bronntanas,
Kavanagh’s, Smyth’s Siopa Ól, Priors and Genealogy Centre.
The
Thomas Galligan Memorial Cup will be the centerpiece of the Sunday
programme with teams from Seán O’Heslins, Aughawillan,
Drumreilly, Fenagh and Aughnasheelin taking part. The official
opening will be at 3.00

Juniors
draw with Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher
Our
juniors drew the Division 5 game against Glenfarne/ Kiltyclogher on
Sunday last. We led by 1-4 to 0-4 at half-time, but a bit of a
misunderstanding led to it being 1-4 to 0-5. David Keegan got two
good early points, Daryl McFarland and Seán McCartin got tow more
and Joseph Murphy finished the goal. We struggled in the second half
and went behind at one stage but Paul Prior, who came on as a late
sub saved us with two late points to level it at 1-7 to 0-10.

Our
Junior A team in Division 4 added another victory to their
successful run in this division when they beat Glencar/Manorhamilton
in the Park. The game had been switched due to the Bee Park being
unplayable. We won by 3-10 to 2-4 but it wasn’t as easy as it
sounds. Indeed you would hardly believe that Manor are at the bottom
of this division as they put in a very stiff challenge. We were
lucky go get two fortunate goals in the early stages, the first when
a Paul Prior free went to the net off two Manorhamilton players. The
second came when two Manor players mixed each other up and Diarmuid
Keegan pounced on the break for an opportunist goal. Paul Prior got
two points from frees and Brian Cafferty, Shane Murphy and Ronan
O’Rourke got points to leave us leading by 2-5 to 2-1, a position
we hardly deserved to be in at half-time.
We
played better in the second half and got good points from Diarmuid
Keegan, Brian Cafferty and Shane Murphy but then Manor got three
points in a row and it looked a bit dangerous.
However Diarmuid Keegan and Paul Prior (free) put us six up
a`gain and Ronan O’Rourke finished it with a goal.

Sean
O'Heslins Ladies
The Ladies had a great win over a very determined Bornacoola Ladies team on Friday week last the 1st May. The final score does not reflect the evenness of this game, especially in the first half. This was our first victory in the higher grade and should go on to encourage us for future games. It wasn't the actual victory that impressed but the display of the team overall. The running, combined with support play, and general team spirit were very encouraging. It was a shame that so few were there to see the match, as they missed our best display for quite awhile. Team: Niamh Smith, Michelle Fanning, Claire Fanning, Gillian Leyden, Kirby Gilgunn (captain), Aine Martin, Ciara O'Dowd, Sarah McLoughlin, Deborah Gilheaney, Orla McWeeney, Leighann Gallagher, Carmel McCartin, Aoife Smith, Katie Duignan, Lynda Harte, Róisín McTague, Megan O' Connor. Alison Gray, Ciara Martin, Emma O'Dell, Ciara McTague, Siobhan McTague, Niamh Flynn, Meabh Gleeson, Ellen Wrynn, Sarah Beth Reilly, Brid McCormack, Laura Creaven, Katherine Toolan, Siobhan Mc Govern.
The ladies were back in action again on Monday 4th May and put up a great display against St. Mary’s. Though defeat was our lot, the display of skill, courage and commitment had to be admired, especially against a physically stronger Carrick side. St. Mary’s are blessed with skill and power and we wish them well in their future games. Niamh Smith's kick outs were very accurate and she brought off some really great saves. The defence were heroic all through especially against the wind in the second half, with captain Kirby Gilgunn leading by example, and Michelle and Claire Fanning were so impressive all through. Gillian was really excellent at right half, as was Aine Martin whose marking was a feature until injured towards the end. Róisín McTague was impressive when coming on to replace Aine. At midfield the elegant high fielding Sarah Mc Loughlin was brilliant all through and her partner Ciara O' Dowd was extremely impressive also. She is a tremendous star of the future. Deborah Gilheaney, what a star! She scored some great points and worked hard helping out in defence. Orla McWeeney is back to her best, scoring a bullet-like goal from twenty yards, and tackled hard showing great determination throughout. Katie Duignan in the unusual role of right half forward scored 1-2 and her ability promises so much more for future games. Our full forwards of Carmel McCartin and Lynda Harte worked extremely hard throughout, and had some hard luck for scores on quite a few occasions.
Help is needed with the final preparations of the new dressing rooms before the official opening so all members of the Ladies team are asked to help out.
The Ladies next match is
against Dromahair in the 9 a-side league next weekend.
One
week to go and wonderful to see so many able and willing to give a
hand. This weekend we will need everyone on board and there will be
lots of help needed over the coming week too.
There
has been a great uptake on the perimeter advertising in the Park and
only a few of the 40 spaces are left. With the official opening
coming up in a weeks time, please contact Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin
at 087 – 2488875, if you are interested in taking up an
advertising space.
Practice
for the cycling event takes place every evening this week and next
at 7.00 from the Marina, Golf Club Rd. All sponsorship cards should
be returned by next Saturday to Brid Sullivan. There will be a
special prize drawn on Sunday 24 for all cyclists who complete the
cycle and who have returned their sponsorship card with at least
€200.
Minors
beat Allen Gaels on Friday last by 2 points. They have beaten
Dromahair, Drumkeerin, Annaduff and Allen Gaels. They lost to
Carrigallen. They now await the results of final games to see if
they qualified for the Final.
Ballinamore
played their last league game at home to Drumkeerin on Sunday.
Ballinamore did well in the early exchanges with two points from
Brian Beirne. At half time Drumkeerin were four points ahead and
Ballinamore were down to fourteen men. Drumkeerin used their extra
man well and managed 2-10 in the second half to Ballinamore’s 0-4.
Foireann: Eoin McHugh, Jack Cullen, John Fanning, Keelan McHugh,

Just
over two weeks to go to the “Lá mór” and preparations are
continuing. Full programme of events will be published shortly.
One
of the few competitions the club never won was the Under 14 Division
1 league. Well, that all changed when a wonderful group of lads gave
a wonderful performance to beat Glencar/Manorhamilton in
Ballinaglera on Saturday. It was as good a game as you would see and
hard won against a good Manor team that never gave up. We have been
in hard luck over the past few years in underage finals and two
years ago we lost the under 12 Championship final to Manorhamilton
but didn’t even reach the League Final. So it was a pleasant
change to come home winners and very deserving winners too. This
time there was no doubt who the best team was but the Manorhamilton
lads could always slip back up the field and get scores against the
run of play.
It
was very even in the first half, playing against the sun> Points
came from Peter Reynolds, Cian McCaffrey (free), Dean McGovern, two
from Billy Williams, Luke Murphy (free), Cian McCaffrey (free) and
Donal Feely. Manor kept in touch and shocked us with a snap goal to
leave only a point in it. However, Billy Williams, who had a great
game throughout, scored a goal to leave it 1-8 to 1-4 at half time.
The second half was very close and points came from Dean
McGovern, Billy Williams, Cian McCaffrey (free) and Peter Reynolds.
However, just when we seemed to be in control Manor got scores
including a goal. Coming close to the end we were two points up and
then Peter Reynolds got a great goal to leave it 2-12 to 2-7. Just
as well he did because Manorhamilton came back for a goal in the
dying seconds and we managed to hold out for a two points win 2-12
to 3-7. It was joy all around as Dan Gallogly, cathaoirleach of
Coiste na nÓg presented the cup to Captain Anthony Maguire. Seán

Our
seniors lost by a single point in a tough encounter in Kinlough last
Saturday where they deserved a draw at least. We were unfortunate to
hit the upright in both halves, from Wayne McKeon in the first half
and Paul McLoughlin in the second. On both occasions the upright
denied us. We started very badly and although we were playing with a
strong breeze, Melvin Gaels started best and had three points up in
four minutes. We struggled badly all through the half and were down
1-6 to 0-3 at the break. Shane Murphy, Wayne McKeon (free) and David
Duignan got our scores. Despite playing against the strong breeze we
played much better in the second half and Anton Arandelovic got two
good points to start us off. Wayne McKeon pointed two frees, David
Duignan got a point and Wayne pointed another free. With time almost
up, Wayne McKeon pointed to level it and it looked we might get a
share of the points, and on our second half display we would have
deserved it. However, Melvin Gaels, who had only got a single point
in the second half although playing with the wind, they had one last
attack and got a point. Time beat us in our quest for an equalizer.
It finished Melvin Gaels 1-8 O’Heslins 0-10.
Foireann:
Denis Dolan, John McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin, Philip Murphy, Jim
McTague, Shane Ferguson, Liam Ferguson, Ciaran Murray, Paul
McLoughlin, Ronan O’Rourke, Wayne McKeon (0-5f), Shane McWeeney,
Sean Murray, David Duignan (0-2), Shane Murphy (0-1). Sub: Anton
Arandelovic (0-2) for Shane McWeeney.
Our
Division 4 team continued on their successful run with a 1-14 to 1-8
win over Aughawillan on Monday. It wasn’t that easy won as
Aughawillan came back at us in the second half and were within a
point of us at one stage. We dominated the first half and were ahead
by 0-10 to 0-4 at half time. Aughawillan got a boost of a soft goal
when Denis Dolan slipped in blocking a ball and deflected into his
own net. Aughawillan started to play after that and had it down to a
point. Rory O’Rourke restored it to two and Shane McWeeney got
another point then came the score of the match. Adrian Gallogly had
gone off injured and Diarmuid Keegan with his first touch of the
ball sent a great pass from fifty yards into David Leyden who
finished a wonder goal – agus b’sin sin do Achadh an Mhuilinn.

Work
is progressing on the Club History on DVD, which will be launched on
the Saturday of Pitch opening by Christy Cooney, Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas
Gael. The DVD will give a wonderful outline of the club from its
foundation in 1889 to the present day. It will cover, football,
hurling, ladies football, underage scene, Scór and a variety of
aspects of the club. This will be one of the highlights of what
promises to be a great weekend
We
urge all our former players and supporters to be in Ballinamore for
the weekend of the official opening of the new Páirc Sheáin Uí
Eislin. It is now less than four weeks away. It will be an occasion
for celebration, 57 years after the original opening of the pitch.
Work is now in progress on putting the final touches to the Stand
and Dressingrooms. Last week the old dressingrooms were demolished
and the famous rooms where many a player togged out is no more. The
new dressingrooms were used for the first time last Friday for an
under 16 game.
Our
Juniors in Division 5 suffered a heavy defeat to Aughnasheelin on
Sunday. For the first ten minutes it looked as if we would do well
in this game but we hit four bad wides early on. However for the
rest of the half we were not able to match Aughnasheelin and it was
0-7 to 0-2 at half time. Tommy McCormack and Shane McWeeney, form a
free, got our scores. We hoped that with the wind behind us things
would improve but it never happened and we were even more out of it
in the second half. Peter Reynolds got our first score of the second
half with only eight minutes left from a free and Adrian Gallogly
got another one. Peter Reynolds got a goal with little time left. It
finished 1-14 to 1-4.

three weeks left we would like to get everyone possible to the Park
this weekend to continue painting, cleaning etc. Please come early

George
O’Rourke spent four formative years in Ballinamore and was a great
underage player. George is in Scotland for a long time now but is a
fervent follower of Seán O’Heslins through the website. He has
e-mailed us lately and here is some of what he had to say:
“Firstly
can I say its great to see an informative GAA website that keeps to
the basics and provides simple information. I only spent just short
of 4 years in Ballinamore but 4 years that was an education and a
half. GAA was always in the blood my mother being a Conway (sister
of Jimmy) and my father from Derrygoan Drumreilly, I missed the boat
growing up in Scotland for a number of years. Since leaving
Ballinamore I have managed to be part of 4 senior championship
victories: 2 in Scotland and 2 in Lancashire. Once the injuries
started to set in I started to referee as well as play and get
involved in the administration of the game now being vice chair of
British Universities Gaelic Games, it was nice to see people like
Paul Prior and Sarah McLoughlin go through the system when they
studied across the water. I would love to be home for the pitch
opening but my work commitments at the moment do not allow this, but
I will be home for the game v The Rossies. My club team in
Manchester, which I served in goal for 7 years, was run by a family
from Tarmonbarry. Another weekend beckons, and its not just the GAA
I involve myself in, I was approached 3 years ago by the camanachd
association to join their team of referees”.
Great to see another Cannaboe man, who learned his football at school in Ballinamore under Gerry Mahon, now promoting the games in Scotland, and helping out hurling’s sister game - Shinty.
Lots
of Players – Lots of Teams
While
we read about clubs in other counties losing players it is good to
see that, so far, there does not seem to be any problem in Leitrim.
Even Division 5 teams seem to have good panels with a good few subs.
This year there are 58 adult teams in Leitrim which is the highest
it has ever been. In 2007 there were also 58 teams but that dropped
to 57 last year when Aughavas went down to two teams. However with
Allen Gaels fielding a fourth team this year it is back to 58. It is
remarkable that St Mary’s and Allen Gaels can field 4 teams each,
something which even the biggest city clubs cannot do. Well done to
both of them. Luckily our numbers are still holding good also.
The
Kildare minor team had a big win in the Leinster Minor football
championship over Wicklow recently and the left corner forward was
Cian Reynolds from the Athy club. Cian is son of Colm Reynolds from
Edentenny, a star underage player with O’Heslins in the 1970s.
Colm himself was left corner forward on the Leitrim team that won
the Fr Manning Cup for the first time in 1975. That Leitrim team had
no fewer than six Ballinamore men on the first fifteen: Padraig
McKeon, Patrick “Beezer” McKiernan, Gay Darcy, Gerry Logan, Hugh
Murphy and Colm Reynolds. Go–éirí leat Cian sa chéad bhabhta
eile le Cill Dara.
The
under 14s are in the League final and it will be played on Thursday.
Please check fixtures for time and venue.
This
game against Glencar/Manorhamilton was one-way traffic from first
whistle to the last despite winning a little more possession in the
second half. Starting the game with a number of injuries didn’t
help. Final score Glencar/Manorhamilton 2-12 Ballinamore SOH 0-1.

The
Sponsored cycle, the “Route of the Narrow Gauge” is just less
than four weeks away and preparations are continuing. Some are
loaning bicycles, others are renting tandems for an easier ride but
most importantly the sponsorship also needs collecting. A cyclist
meeting will be arranged shortly so watch the notes for more news on
that. Anyone who hasn’t been contacted and would like to sponsor a
cyclist or join in the sponsored cycle please get in touch with Brid
Sullivan. Thanks to Phil Appleby for his donation to the pre-All
Ireland Scor function.

Many
thanks to all who helped with the Hurling collection last weekend,

Aughawillan as well. Míle buíochas.
There
has been big demand for the hoodies and T Shirts and all of them
have to be ordered in a single batch. To recap: Tesco (Ballinamore)
are subsidizing these items for underage members at €30 for hoodie
and T Shirt. The price for underage non-members is €55. For adults
the price is €45 for hoodie and €25 for T Shirt. The last day
for orders is Monday next to Patsy Connaughton. Please be clear they
cannot be ordered after that date as it is a single order.

Our
Nuachleas team took the All Ireland title in Killarney on Saturday,
making it a sixth All Ireland success for the club in this
discipline. It was a memorable occasion as the group gave a great
performance and were by all accounts the favourites for the title
after their act “Scór ar Neamh” provided the best entertainment
of the night. Sean O’Heslins are now the “Kerry” of the
Novelty Act and there is great expectation when people see the name
on the programme and the talk in the surrounding rooms and
dressingrooms is “What will they have this year”, then the
excitement when they take the stage. O’Heslin’s didn’t
disappoint and there was general expectation among the neutrals that
we would win, before announcement came. However, for the group,
nothing is ever certain but their wonderful experience is a great
asset. For Seán McKeon, Tommy Moran, Brendan Brennan, Brid
Sullivan, Ross Dooner, Philip and Raymond McHugh it was a wonderful
achievement.
The
group are hugely experienced and all of them have won All Irelands
before except Philip McHugh. This was his first, having lost in
finals on two previous occasions. It was Ross Dooner’s first
Senior win but he has already won a Scór na nÓg All Ireland, and
he and Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin are the only two in Leitrim to have
won both Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsear medals. This was the
club’s sixth All Ireland senior Novelty Act since that first
memorable one in 1984, twenty-five years ago. What a way to
celebrate the 25th anniversary. It brings the club’s
overall successes in All Ireland Scór to 14 (9 senior and 5 Scór
na nÓg), still in second place nationally to St Enda’s Omagh who
have won 16.
The
group were welcomed by the Bornacoola club in Dromod on their return
and they would like to thank Martina Hackett, Michael McGowan and
all who organised this occasion. Then when they came to Edentenny
the bonfires blazed. There was a great reception at the platform and
Club Cathaoirleach, Adrian Smith, had the forces gathered, young and
old. Co Board Cathaoirleach, Gerry McGovern was on hand to welcome
the group. It was great also to see people from the neighbouring
clubs there. All in all, a great end to a Scór year and here’s to
many more, they are certainly keeping Seán O’Heslins on the map.
Our commiserations to Glencar/Manorhamilton who were surely near
winning. They brought great entertainment to the “Leitrim” room
later that night. We urge them to try again next year; their hour
will surely come. Thanks
to Michael Duignan for his help on stage, thanks also to all our
supporters who travelled. Thanks to Cyril Smith for standing in on
the first outing in Aughavas.
Our Senior team earned
another two valuable league points on Saturday with a good win over
local rivals Aughawillan. Poor shooting in the first half left us
with a lot of work to do, however, we were ahead by two points at
half time by virtue of a well taken goal by Brian Cafferty and a
penalty, converted by Wayne McKeon. Ciaran Murray and Paul
McLoughlin did well at midfield and after a tight opening to the
second half we began to gain the upper hand. Our defensive play was
generally good and once we found our range up front nine unanswered
points left some daylight between the teams. The scores finished at
2-12 to 0-7. There was a good turn out of supporters in Aughawillan
and it would be great to see numbers attending matches continue to
grow throughout the year Our next outing is next Saturday away to
St. Mary’s so come along and support the team.
Team and scorers on Saturday
were: Philip Farrelly, Philip Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Johnny
McWeeney, Liam Ferguson, Shane Ferguson, Jim McTague 0-1), Ciaran

Ronan O’Rourke, Shane Murphy, Wayne McKeon (1-2), Sean Murray

Park Committee member.
Our
second team had a disappointing result against Leitrim Gaels on
Sunday in the first game of a double header in Leitrim Village. Poor
passing and shooting were the order of the day in a match where very
little went well for us. The only stand out performances were in
defence with Kevin O’Connor, Matthew Murphy and Shane Ferguson
holding their own. This is our first defeat in this division and
hopefully we can get back on winning ways with our next outing. It
finished 1-8 to 0-8.
Team and scorers: Denis
Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Shane Ferguson, Joe McTague, Matthew
Murphy, Philip Murphy (0-1), Éamonn Walsh, Brian Cafferty (0-2),
David Leyden, Ronan O’Rourke, Paul Prior (0-1), Anthony McTague,
Shane Murphy (0-1), Adrian Gallogly, Shane McWeeney (0-2). Subs
Cormac Ó Suilleabháin for Ronan O’Rourke and Philip Farrelly for
Shane McWeeney
Our
Division 5 team had a dramatic last minute victory over Leitrim
Gaels on Sunday. If we were unlucky to lose to Leitrim Gaels first
team we certainly turned the tables in the second game. We were
behind for most of the game but in the final minute, with Leitrim
Gaels a point ahead, Cormac O Suilleabháin lofted a sideline kick
into the square. The goalie dropped it and let it slide into the net
for a two-point win, 1-16 to 2-11.

Our
Junior A team playing in Division 4 played a great second half to
beat Kiltubrid on Saturday and record their third win in a row out
of three outings. It didn’t look so good at half time when we were
1-7 to 0-4 behind. True, we had two goal chances early on, one sent
wide and another well saved by the Kiltubrid goalie. Points came
from Adrian Gallogly, Anthony McTague, Brian Cafferty and Paul Prior
from a free. The second half performance was a revelation and we got
six points in a row from Shane McWeeney (two frees), Paul Prior a
free, Brian Cafferty, Anthony McTague and Paul Prior again to get
within a point. Then points were traded but two points from Paul
Prior, one from play and another from a free put us ahead for the
first time. Then Paul Prior scored the “point of the game”, an
excellent free from at least sixty yards that would lift any team.
Our final points came from Brian Cafferty and Ronan O’Rourke to
leave us winning by 0-15 to 1-9. Great points from Paul Prior and
Brian Cafferty were really the difference at the end of the day. We
now share top place on this table.

We
were expected to do well this year in Division 5 having come down
from Division 4 last year. However we lost our first two games
narrowly but Fenagh had won their first two so last Sunday’s game
was really a case of turning the corner. We were always the better
team but it took two magic goals from Daryl McFarland in the second
half to finally seal it. At half time we led by 1-8 to 0-2 with our
scores coming in this order: Points from Seán McCartin, David
Leyden, Freddie Walsh, Seán McCartin, David Leyden, Paul Prior,
then a goal from Paul Prior followed by two points from Shane
McWeeney, one from a free. A nine point lead at half time looked
good enough and Paul Prior pointed a fifty to leave ten in it but
then Fenagh got moving; they got a goal and then a penalty which
fortunately went over the bar but it was down to five points at one
stage. The two pieces of combined play from Adrian Gallogly and
Daryl McFarland finished it. The two goals were replicas on one
another. In both cases Adrian Gallogly hit a great pass to Daryl
McFarland at the edge of the square and Daryl finished both to
perfection within two minutes of each other. Michael Dolan saved
from a penalty at the other rend. Points followed from Sean
McCartin, Éamon Walsh and Shane McWeeney. It finished 3-14 to 1-6.

time. Ballinamore came more into the game in the second half with a
goal from Brian Beirne and Andrew Burns worked hard at midfield. In
the end the stronger St Mary’s team were deserving winners on a
scoreline of 5-12 to 2-5.

Help wanted in Park
With
just six weeks to go to the official opening of the Park we need a
serious amount of help with Painting, Tiling, Cleaning and other
jobs. This weekend, Friday, Saturday and Monday, from 9.00 each

female to come and give us a help. Players, supporters, mentors, all
are welcome. If you can work on week evenings please contact Tom

member.
Our
seniors lost to Glencar/Manorhamilton by 0-11 to 0-8 on Sunday. This
was a game we didn’t deserve to lose on the overall run of play
over the hour. Manorhamilton were the better team for the first half
and deservedly led by 0-7 to 0-3 at half time. Our points came from
Wayne McKeon, Anton Arandelovic and Shane Murphy. The second half
was a different story and we dominated for all of the half hour. Two
points from Wayne McKeon and Anthony McTague had it 0-7 to 0-5 and
we were in the driving seat. At this stage Sean Murray and Wayne
McKeon missed two close-in frees and when David Duignan pointed, we
were called back for a free out. We deserved to be level at this
stage. It must be said there was a difficult cross-field breeze
which didn’t help. We also missed chances from play throughout the
half. Glencar/Manor came back at this stage and went five up again.
Liam Ferguson got a point in between Manor scores. There was still
five in it when we got a free from the 14 and Anton tried for goal.
It was saved, but a point could have been taken. Anton finished with
two good points from play to leave it 0-11 to 0-8. After three
leagues games, winning one and losing two narrowly, the experience
to date shows that we are an equal for any Division I side and more
wins will come.

Novelty
Act Wins Connacht title
We
were successful in the Nuachleas in the Connacht Finals with Raymond
McHugh, Philip McHugh, Tommy Moran, Brendan Brennan, Ross Dooner,
Brid Sullivan and God himself, Seán McKeon, putting on a
magnificent performance with “Scór ar Neamh. The act was much
improved on the Leitrim Finals and was, by all opinions, well ahead
of the rest. Now it is on to the All Ireland Finals in Killarney.
Tickets
for the All Ireland Finals must be ordered with Brid Sullivan by
this Friday. Once again we ask for payment with order, and once
tickets are ordered they cannot be cancelled. So, please do not
order tickets unless you are sure you are going, or else pass them
on to someone else.
Our
first junior team beat Bornacoola to make it two wins out of two but
they made hard work of it in Bornacoola on Saturday. Last year this
team was relegated from Division 3 and Bornacoola were promoted from
Division 5. So it was our second team against Bornacoola’s third.
Generally speaking we looked the stronger but Bornacoola came back
on a number of occasions. Anthony McTague got our first score, a
goal, and he followed with a point. Then Paul Prior netted from a
penalty after Adrian Gallogly was fouled in the square. However our
five points lead was short-lived as Bornacoola netted from a penalty
shortly afterwards. Ruairí
Ó Suilleabháin, Shane Murphy and Anthony McTague got points to
leave us leading by 2-4 to 1-3 at half-time.
We
were still keeping three or four ahead with points from Shane Murphy
(2), Anthony McTague, Gordon Hughes, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin and
Brian Cafferty but Bornacoola rocked us with two goals to level with
about 5 minutes left. Then Ronan O’Rourke proved our saviour with
the final two points and we won by 2-12 to 3-7. Although we missed a
lot of chances it was good scores from Anthony McTague, Philip
Murphy and Ronan O’Rourke in particular that saved the day.

We
were successful in the Nuachleas once again with Raymond McHugh,
Philip McHugh, Tommy Moran, Brendan Brennan, Ross Dooner, Brid
Sullivan and God himself, Seán McKeon, winning with “Scór an
Neamh” In the other events, Aisling Maxwell was one of four
outstanding singers, any one of which could represent Leitrim well
and so it was with Brendan Brennan in Aithriseoireacht. Our Trath na
gCeist of Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Andy Duffy and Seán Ó Suilleabháin
lost out also to Bornacoola. The Connacht Finals are in Elphin on
Sunday next starting at 5.00. Go n-éirí leis na buaiteoirí go léir
ó Chontae Liatroma.
We
would like to thank all of the people who helped on the night:
Margie McLoughlin, Mary Corby, Maureen McHugh, Michael Fanning,
Michael Duignan, Gerry Farry, Eugene Maxwell and John McCartin.
Thanks also to Frank O’Brien’s, per Tommy McCormack for spot
prizes and Frank Flynn of Pat Joe’s for sponsorship. Míle buíochas.
Our
juniors in their first game in Division 5 lost to Carrigallen but
led all the way and conceded a goal and a point in the last minutes.
However, Carrigallen were the other team to be relegated from
Division 4 last year so they would probably be the strongest team in
it. We lost by 2-9 to 1-8. Good to see a good turn out also for the
first game.

Scór
Liatroma ar an Satharn
Go
néirí lenar iomaitheoirí i Scór Liatroma ar an Satharn: Aisling
Maxwell san Amhranaíocht Aonair, Brendan Brennan san
Aithriseoireacht agus ár ngrúpaí i dTráth na gCeist agus sa
Nuachleas. Beidh Scór ag tosnú ag 7.00 san Ionad Pobail.
Bua ag Foireann na Sinsear i Sciath A
Bhí
bua mhaith againn sa chéad chluiche scéithe i gcoinne Aislinn ar
an Satharn. Eslin started very well and were 0-7 to 0-2 up well into
the first half. Indeed but for a great save from Denis Dolan in the
goal, they could have been further ahead. Seán Murray and Adrian
Smith had got early points but we finished the half well with points
from Ronan O’Rourke and a David Duignan free. It looked better at
half down when we were down just 0-7 to 0-4.
Scéal eile ar fad sa dara leath. Points from Shane Murphy, Ronan O’Ro
